TIMSS
Congratulations
A number of year 8 classes have been selected
to take part in the Trends in International
Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). TIMSS
is an important educational research project
investigating student achievement in mathematics
and science. More than 60 countries, including
Australia, are participating in this study. TIMSS
is an important activity to keep us, as parents
and citizens, informed about how our students in
Australia are performing in comparison to their
peers in other countries and to compare programs
of study and teaching practices. We will be able
to obtain current national and international
information which will help improve the teaching
and learning of mathematics and science in our
country.
Congratulations to Dylan Kennedy (8A) who recently
represented Australia in Taekwondo in the OCEANIA
Championships and the Australian Open. He competed
in the Cadet division (45-49kg/ 13-14 year old) in both
competitions. The OCEANIA championships were held in
Sydney Olympic Park on Friday 14th August. Dylan performed
exceptionally well and achieved second place in the OCEANIA
Championships, winning a silver medal.
Selected students will do an assessment in
mathematics and science and complete a
questionnaire about their experiences at home
and school. There is no need to study as the
assessment will not affect individual students’
grades or progress in school. All data will be kept
strictly confidential and no individual student
or school will be identified in publishes data or
reports.
Dear Parents
RE: Electrical Testing with Energise Oz
Previously Ballajura Community College was able to offer electrical testing for students thinking of pursuing a career
in the Electrical Industry. This test gives the student an accurate indication of whether they will meet the Maths
aptitude requirements to be considered for an apprenticeship in the Electrical Industry.
Due to government cutbacks, the College of Electrical Training, can no longer offer schools the same service. They
are able to conduct a workshop at schools, but this will incur a cost.
However, as we have previously partnered with Energise Oz, they will continue to offer free electrical testing at their
Joondalup premises, 20 Injune Way, Joondalup.
For those students wishing to be tested, you can contact the College of Electrical Training, via their website,
energiseoz.com.au and select a workshop day that is available. Click onto Project Features, and select Readiness
assessment.
Kind regards
Cathy Pellegrino

“Experiencing university in the school holidays”
Year 11, UWA Metro camp 2014
The driving rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 25 students nd 1 teacher
that left BCC in the July school holidays heading to Point Walter Reserve. The
merriment and excitement was felt by all.
We were on our way to Point Walter reserve for the first part of our UWA
Metro Camp – to ‘experience University ’. The afternoon and evening were
spent making new friends and re-aquainting with old ones. There were year
11 students from Ellenbrook Secondary College, current UWA students (who
had graduated from BCC) and even an ex-BCC teacher – Mr Dimanlig, who
now works as an Aspire team member (UWA staff).
The UWA staff and Aspire team were so helpful and friendly, making us feel
relaxed and settled in really quickly. They told us about the different programmes
and scholarships UWA offered and the different entry pathways into University.
After the formalities, we met Mike. He was the co-ordinator of the leadership and team building activities. These activities were
ice-breakers and completely designed to be fun and broke down barriers of shyness and apathy (if any existed!?!). Everyone was
encouraged to think laterally, whilst working and communicating within small and large groups.
Some people managed to solve problems whilst others just got themselves into a bigger mess. No matter what the outcome, Mike
succeeded in getting everyone talking to one another and having a laugh at the same time. There was drawing, balancing, elastic
binding, paper cutting and lots of other challenges which made sure that everyone was included and participated.
Dinner was a buffet spread and that pleased everyone – especially when we didn’t even have to do the washing up (although Ms Gatland had a few people fooled that it was to be done by the 2 loudest students!).
It was more team building activities after dinner then a quick de-brief before head
ing back to the rooms for bedtime. I must say, it was really comical to watch some people try to make their bed (for the first time ever!), with a top and bottom
(unfitted) sheet.
The following day, we had a cooked and continental breakfast and headed off to UWA by bus. For many, this was the first time they has seen a University, let alone
visited one. Prior to arriving at UWA, everyone had chosen a morning workshop to participate in. The workshops on offer were:
Maths, Science or Arts/Architecture. These workshops were conducted in UWA lecture theatres and at the Harry Perkins Institute.
Mr Siwek greeted us on arrival at UWA and led one group to the Maths workshop. Barcodes, scanners and problem solving
activities were discussed and tried.
Ms Gatland took the Science group to the Harry Perkins Institute. What a fabulous,
world class research facility. Students were given a tour of the impressive facility as
well as being able to experience working in a Level 2 lab, with state of the art
equipment and learning (hands on) scientific techniques and procedures. They were
also able to speak to researchers about their projects and the pathways that took
them there.
Students who did the Art workshop were pleasantly surprised to learn and develop
their skills in architecture and design. “I thought it was going to be boring and that
I wouldn’t be able to do anything, but we were so wrong, it was really cool” (several
students).
A fabulous lunch at University Hall followed the workshops, before we headed back to school. It had been a great camp and one where everyone gained a real ‘university experience’. You could hear a pin drop on the bus on the way back to school, the excitement, challenges and mental stimulation had taken their toll. Several people had to be woken up when we arrived in the school car park.
Thanks must go to the Aspire team at
UWA for organising and funding the entire
camp and to the School Pathways
Programme – Defence Industries for its
support in making the camp happen.
If you’re in year 11 next year and thinking
about going to Uni, then this camp is a
must. Be quick though as places are limited.

Young Originals Exhibition
The Young Western is an exhibition of outstanding artworks from
selected West Australian government high schools. It is a fantastic
display of original art by a collection of talented students.
Sophisticated photographs, intricate textile constructions, clever
graphics, flawless woodcraft and some of the finest paintings are
all presented in one venue.
This year Digital Design and Arts were successful in having three students
selected to exhibit their work. Digital Design student Dana Mitrevski, Year
12 entered a photograph called Queen of Hearts, which was produced
using some outstanding lighting and digital editing skills. Year 10 Art
student Muslim Al-Mohemmad was successful with his clay sculpture titled
‘Personal Totem’. Deng Deng, Year 8, was successful with his mixed media self portrait. The exhibition was held at the
Spectrum Gallery at Edith Cowan University. Students and teachers from government high schools celebrated their
successes with an invitation to the opening night of this prestigious exhibition.
METAMORPHOSIS
Metamorphosis is an art and design exhibition of the work of secondary school students. The exhibition has been
developed by Central Institute of Technology to promote the excellence and originality achieved by senior secondary
school students in their Art and Design studies. Judging for this award is focused heavily on creativity and the exploration
of ideas. Panels formed by the art and design schools of Central Institute of Technology review all works submitted and
recommend works to be exhibited.
Digital Design were successful in having finalists in in two of the four categories. Year 12 student, Pamela Mino won the
Photography category and year 12 Thanapon Piyalapo was runner-up in Graphic Design. Zoe Wolski is to be congratulated
on making the finals.
YOH Fest
On Tuesday 2nd September the Year 11 & 12 Stage 1 dance students travelled to Mandurah to perform in the Youth on
Health Dance Festival (YOH Fest). Each year students create a dance item based around a chosen theme. This year’s
theme was “Our Community”, which gave the students the opportunity to create a dance around a health issue they
believed impacted their community. The students created a piece, titled “Who You Are”, which explored the idea of the
body image – and how everybody is perfect and
that everyone should be accepted for who they
are, rather than judged for how they look.
Throughout the day, students were able to see a
bit of what Mandurah has to offer, and we also
had a number of students take part in the annual
YOH Fest talent quest. Besides a few hiccups
with the sound in our rehearsal, the evening’s
performance went very well and their
performance was of a high standard, with the
students receiving the award for “Excellent
delivery of message”. Overall, it was a great day
out.
Year 10 Dinner Dance
The annual BCC Year 10 Dinner Dance was held on Wednesday 3rd September in the Wellington Room at the Morley Recreation Centre. This event is always a highlight of the year for those students who have participated well in the HPE Dance
program during Term 3 and gives the students the opportunity to display their new skills in front of their peers. It was a
great night had by all dancing the night away and burning up the dance floor. The girls all looked amazing in their dresses
and the boys looked handsome in their smart attire. Award winners on the night were:
Best dressed –Jessica D’Cruze and Jayden Vo
Burn the Floor – Shanae Cole and Jared Chitarra
Most Impressive – Monique-Rose Jacobs-Cousins and Travis Bolin
Year 11 Semi-Formal
The much anticipated Year 11 Semi-Formal took place on Friday, 5th September at AQWA. This very special venue with
its breathtaking views over the marina was the backdrop for a night of fun, frivolity and fabulous food! As the students
arrived, they were greeted by waiters bearing trays of mocktails and with glass in hand, guests were free to wander
through the aquarium before making their way to the reception centre. Once the speeches were out of the way, each
table was called to the buffet with its amazing selection of delicious fare. The dancing then began and the festivities
were underway. Those students who were in attendance are to be commended on their impeccable behaviour and on
their sense of fun.
