India test-fires
cruise missile
‘Nirbhay’
Jaya gets bail
Balasore (Odisha), Oct 17 (PTI):
India today successfully test-fired
its indigenously developed nuclear
capable sub-sonic cruise missile
‘Nirbhay’, which can strike targets
more than 700 kms away, from a
test range at Chandipur near here.
‘The missile was test-fired from
a mobile launcher positioned at
launch pad 3 of Integrated Test
Range at about 10.03 AM and the
trial was totally successful,’ an official associated with the test said.
‘The flight path of the missile was
1.13 hrs,’ the official said, adding
that all desired parameters were met
during the trial. ‘The outcome of the
trial was ascertained by analysing
the data retrieved from radars and
telemetry points, monitoring the
trajectories,’ the official said.
It is the second test of the subsonic long range cruise missile
‘Nirbhay’, which has a range of 700
to 1000 km, from the ITR.
The maiden flight, conducted on 12
March, 2013 could not achieve all
the desired parameters as ‘the flight
had to be terminated mid-way when
deviations were observed from its
intended course,’ sources said.
India has in its arsenal the 290 km range
supersonic ‘BrahMos’ cruise missile
which is jointly developed by India and
Russia. But ‘Nirbhay’ with long range
capability is a different kind of missile being developed by the Defence Research
and Development Organisation (DRDO).

n a major relief to AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa,
the Supreme Court today granted her bail in a disproportionate assets case in which she was sentenced
to four-year jail term.
A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu stayed the
sentence and warned Jayalalithaa against causing any
delay by seeking adjournment in her appeal in Karnataka
High Court. The bench directed Jayalalithaa to file paperbook of her appeal in the High Court within two months.
It refused to dispose of the bail plea and posted the case
for hearing on 18 December to ensure that Jayalalithaa
complies with its order. The bench also said that it would ask
the high court to dispose of her appeal within three months.
The apex court also granted bail to Jayalalithaa’s close
aide Sasikala and her relatives V N Sudhakaran, disowned
foster-son of the former Chief Minister, and Ilavarasi.

DEEPAVALI COMES EARLY FOR THEM
on AIADMK’s anniversary
NT Bureau / PTI
New Delhi / Chennai, Oct 17:
On a day when the AIADMK celebrated its Foundation Day, it turned out to
be double bonanza for party workers,
as general secretary J Jayalalithaa was
granted bail by the Supreme Court in
the DA case.
The apex court also granted bail to
Jayalalithaa’s close aide Sasikala
and her relatives V N Sudhakaran
and Ilavarasi in the disproportionate
assets case in which the four were
sentenced to four-year jail term. Following this, Jayalalithaa and others
are expected to come out of a Bengaluru jail today itself.
A bench headed by Chief Justice
H L Dattu stayed the sentence and
ordered the appellants against
causing any delay by seeking
adjournment in her appeal in Karnataka High Court.
The bench directed Jayalalithaa and
others to file paperbook of her appeal
in the High Court within two months,
and fixed the date for 18 December.
‘If paperbook is not filed within two
months, then we won’t give you even
a single day more,’ the bench said.
Monsoon sets in over
TN; city to get more rain
JUMBO SHOWER
Celebrations in TN
Within no time of the Supreme Court granting bail to their leader,
AIADMK workers in Chennai and all over Tamilnadu jumped into celebration mode, braving rain.
Fire crackers were bursted and sweets were distributed at the party
headquarters at Royapettah here. Party workers hailed the verdict and
said ‘justice has won’.
Meanwhile, AIADMK activists from all over the State are said to have
started to Chennai to accord grand welcome to Jayalalithaa.
The Bench also said that it would
ask the High Court to dispose of her
appeal within three months.
In an hour-long hearing, initially
the bench expressed reservation
on granting bail to her, saying the
trial proceedingshad been delayed
for years and if bail was given then
appeal would be decided in two
decades.
Senior advocate Fali S Nariman,
appearing for Jayalalithaa, assured
the court that the matter would not
be delayed, saying that he was willing to give the statement on affidavit
that no adjournment would be taken
by her in the high court.
‘I undertake that no delay would
be caused while appeal is heard by
high court. It is not a game. It may
have been a game before. You can
record my statement,’ Nariman told
the Bench.
Jayalalithaa moved the Supreme
Court seeking bail after the Karnataka
High Court rejected her bail plea following her conviction in the disproportionate assets case. Jayalalithaa
pleaded that she has been sentenced
only for four years in the case and she
is also suffering from various ailments
as grounds for her immediate relief.
She said as Chief Minister she did
not misuse her powers in this case.

Met office said that the wind direction
has changed to easterlies. This is an initial
sign of the northeast monsoon
NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 17:
It had been unusually hot in the past week in Chennai despite the occasional
thundershowers prompting questions as to when the northeast monsoon would
set in. Overnight rains in the city have been followed by hefty showers this
afternoon, giving residents a respite from the humidity.
Meanwhile, the Met office said the city would continue to experience rainfall
in the next two days. Sources in the weather office said the sky conditions
would be generally cloudy. Rain or thundershower may occur in some areas.
Maximum and minimum temperature would be around 33 and 27 degree
Celsius respectively.
Scattered thunderstorms are likely in the city and suburbs till Monday, the Met
department said. There was speculation that the passing clouds from the northeast are the cause of it. Sources in the Met office said that the wind direction has
changed to easterlies. This is an initial sign of the northeast monsoon, they added.
Normally, the northeast monsoon sets in around 20 October, and is crucial
to the city as it contributes to nearly 87 cm of the yearly rainfall of 140 cm.
‘The climate was too hot yesterday. I was really surprised when I saw the drizzle
today morning. For a marketing professional like me this definitely a boon as we
don’t have to slog in the hot sun’, said Avinash, a resident of Virugambakkam.
Many people in the city welcome the fall in temperature. ‘It was really humid
and sultry last week. Rain is the need of the hour. But I hope it doesn’t affect
our Deepavali celebrations,’ said Nirmala, a housewife from Adyar.
Traffic flow remained largely unaffected in most parts of the city despite the
overnight showers. However, in areas like Sardar Patel Road, waterlogging
was reported and vehicles were stuck in the heavy traffic.
NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 17:
With just four days to go for Deepavali, the police department has
beefed up security in the city. A
district-wise supervision plan has
been laid out by the police to tackle
any unforeseen circumstance.
Crowded areas like T Nagar,
Purasawalkam, Flower Bazaar,
Washermenpet, Mylapore, Velacheri and Koyambedu bus terminus
are the main areas of focus, say
police sources.
Police watch towers have been set
up in places where people gather to
shop. Congested areas will have policemen keeping constant vigil with
binoculars and a section of personnel patrolling in mufti.
Moreover, the police personnel
have also been given address
systems-a mic and a speaker to give
instructions to the public.
CCTV surveillances are on and
barricades are set, particularly at
bus stands. Special teams have
also been formed to avert pickpocketing.

Centre to SC
New Delhi, Oct 17:
The Centre today filed an application in the Supreme Court, saying
it cannot disclose details of foreign
accounts held by Indians in countries
which are governed by bilateral double taxation avoidance treaties.
Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani
said that this is an attempt by the
government to shield those who
have stashed black money abroad.
The Supreme Court has agreed
to hear Centre’s application on 28
October.
Meanwhile, a high-level delegation of tax and revenue officials is
set to soon travel to Switzerland
in order to pursue cases of black
money and secret accounts held
by Indians in banks in the Alpine
nation.
Reports said that the delegation,
which will lay special focus on a
number of pending requests, will be
led by Revenue Secretary Shaktikanta Das and will have CBDT chairman
K V Chowdary and two other officials
of the finance ministry’s foreign taxation wing as its members.
The official visit, reports said, was
set up in quick time after the Supreme
Court-appointed Special Investigation
Team (SIT) was taken into confidence
by investigative agencies that a oneon-one visit between the officials of
the two countries was necessary to
take the probe in these cases forward.

Fortis Hospital conducts awareness
drive on hygiene among children
NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 17:
The nursing team from Fortis Hospital organised an awareness drive on the
theme ‘Clean hands save lives’ at Government Girls Higher
Secondary School at Ashok Nagar recently.
According to a press release, the awareness programme was organised
to observe ‘Global Hand Washing Day’. More than 425 students from class
VI to XII took part. The basic objective behind the programme was to build
awareness and inculcate the healthy habit of maintaining the hygiene of hands
among children aged between 12 and 18 years of age.
It is estimated that washing hands with soap and water could reduce diarrheal disease-associated deaths by up to 50 per cent. A large percentage of
foodborne disease outbreaks are spread by contaminated hands. Appropriate
hand washing practices can reduce the risk of foodborne illness and other
infections. Hand washing can reduce the risk of respiratory infections by 16
per cent, the release said.
The students were briefed on the importance of washing their hands at
regular intervals and specifically before eating food. A concise audio visual
presentation explaining the different steps and methods to wash hands was
also screened specially for children at the event.
Authorities from Fortis spoke on the benefits of maintaining hygiene of
hands. The use of an alcohol gel hand sanitizer in the classroom provided an
overall reduction in absenteeism due to infection by 19.8 per cent among 16
elementary schools and 6,000 students, they said.
In addition the teachers of the school took an oath to ensure the implementation and practice of following all that was taught to the children on maintaining
the hygiene of hands diligently.
The teachers will also encourage and guide students pass this knowledge on
to other children. Fortis is working towards organising many such programmes
in various schools in around the vicinity of the hospital on Arcot Road in the
near future, the release said.
NIVEDHIKA KRISHNAN
Chennai, Oct 17:
The bus terminus at Tambaram Sanatorium was opened amid much fanfare
last year. However, the utility of the
facility continues to raise questions. A
section of residents said that the location
is an issue and is one of the reasons for
its underutilisation.
The depot which has a capacity to accommodate 40 buses at a time mostly
remains unoccupied. It was inaugurated
with an aim to ease traffic snarls and
chaos on GST Road. However, things
haven’t changed much, said some residents and motorists.
The State Transport Corporation (STC)
operates buses to Kancheepuram,
Sriperumbudur, Vallakottai, Vellore
and Chittoor from this stop. Besides,
MTC buses largely utilise it as a normal
bus stop, except buses bound for destinations like Padappai, Perambakkam,
Mettukuppam and Ezhichur.
Nevertheless, the location of the terminus prevents officials from operating
other MTC and STC buses from here.
It is cited as a reason for non-operation
of city buses from this stop.
Shankar, a frequent commuter said,
‘Leave alone the city, people in the
neighbourhood will find it difficult to
reach the depot. East and West Tambaram residents have to catch an auto/
share auto/bus to reach here, which
does not make sense’.
Similarly, STC buses operating to the
south parts of the State -- Tiruchi, Kumbakonam and Salem are scheduled from
Tambaram mofussil bus depot.
This leads to increased traffic during
weekends and there is chaos, especially
on weekends.
On the other hand, the Tambaram main
bus depot, adjoining the Railway station,
falls under a well-connected transport
system. Thousands of visitors utilise the
facility and around 6,000 MTC services
pass through the place.

Tambaram-Sanatorium terminus on GST Road has 18 buys bays and 30 shops, but they are not
utilised to the maximum.
Developing a parallel terminus to ease congestion till Rajaji Road junction, may be regarded as
a viable alternative, but connectivity to the facility
remains key in terms of utilisation, lamented users.
Ramanarayanan, a senior citizen and resident
of West Tambaram said when the terminus was
opened there was a feeling that all buses originating from Tambaram would start from here but that
didn’t happen. He said it was a blessing in disguise
because elderly persons like him would have been
put to hardship as it was not well connected and
reaching it would have meant shelling out money
on travel by auto or share-autos.
The location (of the terminus) has made it unviable
for MTC to operate buses
to various destinations in
the city
Sources said that MTC officials were looking
to find ways to tackle the traffic chaos near the
old terminus up to Rajaji Road intersection on
GST Road.

WHAT NEWS TODAY PRINTS IS NEWS THAT COUNTS
Time for action
B
y all accounts, the incumbent governments in both Maharashtra
and Haryana are on the way out. Just as well. They had taken
the voters for granted, pillaging taxpayers’ money, behaving
arrogantly and generally adopting a deaf-and-dumb stance towards
people’s everyday woes. Fifteen years of unmitigated corruption and
misrule by the Congress-NCP combine in Maharashtra and ten years
of Hooda’s ‘misrule’ in Haryana had alienated voters. There were
money-making scams galore in both states, with Hooda buying job
security by roping in Sonia Gandhi’s notorious son-in-law Robert
Vadra for the bestowing of special favours.
The voter has now spoken. And if the exit polls are any indication,
the voter has spoken most contemptuously, rejecting the ruling
parties in the two states. However, whom he or she has preferred to
put in the seats of power is less certain, though here again, there is
no confusion as to which party is set to emerge as the single largest
in the two assemblies.
The Modi-led BJP is sitting pretty to emerge as by far the largest
party in Maharashtra and Haryana. Indeed, a couple of well-regarded
pollsters give the party clear majority in both states. The Modi-Shahled BJP had gambled big by going solo in these states. The gamble
seems to have paid off rather well. It is notable that in neither State
did the BJP have a majority of its own; in fact, in both states, it was
always a junior ally of the dominant regional party, that is, of the Shiv
Sena in Maharashtra and the Indian National Lok Dal in Haryana.
Now these once-senior partners seem to have been relegated to the
second position to the BJP which, according to the exit polls, is on
course to emerge as the top winner.
That despite a weak organisational presence in the two States, a
fact borne out by its fielding of new entrants in the polls, the BJP
still worsted its rivals speaks volumes for the continuing pull of the
Modi appeal. Five months after winning a record national mandate,
the Modi magic remains undiminished. He singlehandedly seems
to have pulled it off for his party. Neither a narrow regional appeal
of the Sena, playing victim of an alleged betrayal by the alliance
partner, nor the aggressive Jat appeal of the Chautalas seemed to
have swayed the voters in the two states. The overriding concern of
the voters seemed to be to elect someone who promises a purposeful
and transparently uncorrupt government. The Modi-led BJP alone
seemed to fit the bill among all the contenders. Yes, the actual
results will only be out on Sunday. We can only speculate on the
outcome until then.
But, regardless of the official results, now that the polls in the
two key states are behind us, it is time for the Modi Government to
take some tough decisions. There ought to be no more distractions
ahead --- yes, elections in Jharkand and J&K are due next, but
these cannot be allowed to impact governance. Five months after
his installation, Prime Minister Modi now has no excuse to shelve
vital reforms necessary for faster growth. Thus far, he has merely
sought to clear the mess left behind by the previous government.
Now he is expected to implement his economic and social blueprint
to put India back on the growth trajectory.
Modi should begin to implement the long-awaited Goods and
Services Tax. Given the pole position of the BJP in the federal
polity, reaching a consensus on GST should no longer pose an
insurmountable problem. Again, Modi has already unveiled his
potentially revolutionary reform to free the manufacturing sector
of the corrupt inspector raj. Another vital reform should break the
monopoly of the agriculture produce marketing committees, which
exploit vegetable and fruit growers and also milk consumers of these
essentials for prohibitively high profits.
The retrograde land and labour legislations need to be urgently
updated to facilitate rather than hinder infrastructure and
manufacturing expansion. There are a number of other important
issues which require the Prime Minister’s attention, but it should
suffice to mention here that given his commitment to put India on
the path of faster growth, he is unlikely to allow any obstacles to
stand in his way. Changing the ‘anything goes’ mentality of the
permanent bureaucracy is an equally big challenge. Modi has the
popular and legislative support to ensure that the bureaucracy plays
its part in the nation-building task. So far, he has done well to touch
upon universal problems like cleanliness, attendance in offices,
ridding the statute book of obsolete laws, etc. Now, he will need to
undertake major structural reforms in the economic and political
sphere to make India work. People believe he can do it. Hence the
vote for the BJP in the Maharashtra and Haryana polls.

Safety at risk
Sir,
Road transport in lndia is very popular for various reasons, but the condition of lndian roads is very poor and deplorable. Pressure on roads has been
on increase and the number of vehicles is going up by leaps and bounds.
Lack of road-sense has further complicated the matters. Driving licenses
are given on illegal gratifications to the authorities and traffic rules and
regulations are thrown to the winds. Overloading is one of the major factors of road- accidents and deaths. The condition of the vehicles is hardly
found road-worthy.
Drug-abuse and addiction by drivers is another major cause of accidents.
The ever increasing use of mobile phones has posed a new challenge to
road-safety. lmmediate and effective steps should be taken to check the
ever increasing number of road-accidents and deaths.
Lane discipline is missing; road-safety measures are thrown to the winds;
drivers, particularly the youth zig-zag on the roads and the traffic police remain a silent spectator. Red-lights are often jumped, particularly in the early
and late hours of the day. Over speeding and violating the prescribed limits
are also there in abundance. There is hardly any round-about discipline.

Ebola scare, Obama czar
‘Travel ban not the best way to prevent spread of virus’
WASHINGTON:
US President Barack Obama has
said he might consider appointing
an ‘Ebola czar’ to help coordinate
efforts to combat the deadly disease
and shot down calls for a travel ban
to West African countries that have
been ravaged by the epidemic.
‘It may make sense for us to have

this initial surge of activity we can
have a more regular process just
to make sure that we’re crossing all
the T’s and dotting all the I’s going
forward,’ Obama told reporters when
asked if he is planning to appoint an
Ebola czar.
Talking to reporters after holding
meeting with his top national security and health officials, Obama said
travel ban might not be the best way
to prevent the spread of this virus. ‘It
is currently the judgment of all those
who have been involved that a flatout travel ban is not the best way to
go,’ he said.
‘I don’t have a philosophical objection necessarily to a travel ban if that
is the thing that is going to keep the
American people safe. The problem
is, is that in all the discussions I’ve
had thus far with experts in the field,
experts in infectious disease, is that
a travel ban is less effective than
the measures that we are currently
instituting,’ he said.
‘If we institute a travel ban instead of
the protocols that we’ve put in place
now, history shows that there is a
likelihood of increased avoidance.
People do not readily disclose their
information,’ he said.

Do we have second
Himalaya range?
MELBOURNE:
Scientists have found evidence of a huge mountain
range similar in scale to the Himalayas which spanned
at least 2,500 kilometres and sustained an explosion of
life on Earth 600 million years ago.
The mountain range spanned at least 2,500 kilometres
of modern west Africa and northeast Brazil, which at that
time were part of the supercontinent Gondwana.
‘Just like the Himalayas, this range was eroded intensely because it was so huge. As the sediments washed
into the oceans they provided the perfect nutrients for
life to flourish,’ said Professor Daniela Rubatto of the
Research School of Earth Sciences at The Australian
National University (ANU).
‘Scientists have speculated that such a large mountain
range must have been feeding the oceans because of
the way life thrived and ocean chemistry changed at
this time, and finally we have found it,’ Rubatto said.
The discovery is the earliest evidence of Himalayan-
scale mountains on Earth, scientists said. ‘Although the
mountains have long since washed away, rocks from
their roots told the story of the ancient mountain range’s
grandeur,’ said co-researcher Professor Joerg Hermann.
‘The range was formed by two continents colliding.
During this collision, rocks from the crust were pushed
around 100 kilometres deep into the mantle, where the
high temperatures and pressures formed new minerals,’
Hermann said.

bendable and stretchable.
Researchers demonstrated the
mechanical generation of electricity
from the two-dimensional (2D) MoS2
material. The piezoelectric effect in
this material had previously been
predicted theoretically.
Piezoelectricity is a well-known effect in which stretching or compressing a material causes it to generate
an electrical voltage (or the reverse,
in which an applied voltage causes it
to expand or contract).
But for materials of only a few
atomic thicknesses, no experimental
observation of piezoelectricity has
been made, until now. The observation provides a new property for
two-dimensional materials such as
molybdenum disulfide, opening the
potential for new types of mechanically controlled electronic devices.
Argentina launches

BUENOS AIRES:
Argentina has launched its first
domestically built communications
satellite. The ARSAT-1 satellite
launched yesterday is the first to be
constructed with local technology in
Latin America. It was built by a crew
of about 500 scientists over seven

The satellite was launched from a
base in French Guyana and is to orbit
36,000 kilometers above Earth. It’s
designed to provide digital television
and cellphone services to Argentina,
Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. ARSAT-1 is also expected to improve

Chimps have favourite ‘tool set’ for hunting
LONDON:
Chimpanzees search for the right tools from a
key plant species when preparing to ‘ant dip’ - a
technique that enables them to feast on army ants
without getting bitten, a new study has found.
West African chimpanzees will search far and
wide to find Alchornea hirtella, a spindly shrub
whose straight shoots provide the ideal tools to
hunt aggressive army ants, researchers said.
The plant provides the animals with two different
types of tool, a thicker shoot for ‘digging’ and a
more slender tool for ‘dipping’. On locating an army
ant colony, chimpanzees will dig into the nest with
the first tool - aggravating the insects. They then
dip the second tool into the nest, causing the angry
ants to swarm up it.
Once the slender shoot is covered in ants,
the chimpanzees
pull it out and wipe
their fingers along
it: scooping up the
ants until they have
a substantial handful
that goes straight into
the mouth.
This technique ‘ant dipping’ - was
previously believed to be a last resort for the
hungry apes, only exploited when the animal’s
preferred food of fruit couldn’t be found.
But the latest study based on over ten years of
data, showed that, in fact, army ants are a staple
in the chimpanzee diet - eaten all year round
regardless of available sources of fruit.
Ants may be an important source
of essential nutrients not available
in the typical diet, said researchers,
as well as a potential source of
protein and fats. ‘Ant dipping is a
remarkable feat of problem-solving
on the part of chimpanzees,’ said Dr
Kathelijne Koops from the University
of Cambridge’s Division of Biological
Anthropology and Junior Research
Fellow of Homerton College.
‘If they tried to gather ants from the ground with
their hands, they would end up horribly bitten
with very little to show for it. But by using a tool
set, preying on these social insects may prove as
nutritionally lucrative as hunting a small mammal
- a solid chunk of protein,’ Koops said.

New iPads to help Apple
regain momentum
Cupertino, Oct 17 (AFP):
Apple, facing tough competition in the tablet market, on Thursday unveiled
a new line-up of iPads that feature its mobile payments system and include
the fingerprint unlock used on iPhones.
The California tech giant said its new iPad Air 2 would be thinner than its
rivals, with upgraded graphics power and other features.
The new line-up aims to help Apple regain ground in a tablet market increasingly dominated by the rival Android platform.
Apple said its mobile payments system known as Apple Pay, allowing iPhone
and iPad users to tap their devices to pay at retailers, would begin operations
Monday with more banks and merchants on board.
The iPad Air 2 is 18 percent thinner than its predecessor, Apple said as it
unveiled the new device at its Cupertino, California headquarters.
The new design at 6.1 millimeters (0.24 inches) ‘makes it the world’s thinnest
tablet’, the company’s vice president Phil Schiller said.
‘It’s so thin you can stack two of them and it will still be thinner than the original
iPad’. The aluminum-body tablet uses a new A8X processor, and boasts up
to 10 hours of battery life. It weighs 435 grams (0.96 pounds) and has twin
cameras capable of producing high-definition videos.
The new slimmed-down tablet comes after last year’s iPad launch prompted
rivals to say they had a slimmer profile.
The new tablet comes with a more powerful processor that delivers livelier
graphics, improved battery life and Touch ID, the fingerprint unlock system
that Apple introduced last year on its iPhones.
Apple also upgraded its smaller tablet, called the iPad Mini 3, which
will also have the Touch ID system. Pricing will start at $399 for the
new iPad mini, and $499 for the iPad Air 2. Apple will cut prices for the
current iPad models.
Apple chief Tim Cook said the iPad has been wildly successful, with 225
million units sold in the four years since the initial launch.
But in a tablet market that is cooling, the rival Android platform has been
gaining share.

Former ‘keeper Jones says ‘golden era’ being tarnished

Kevin Pietersen may have played

South African-born batsman
Pietersen, sacked by England at

Wellington, Oct 17:
New Zealand’s former skipper Ross Taylor and paceman Adam Milne will
miss the upcoming one-day international series against South Africa because
of injury, New Zealand Cricket said on Friday.
Top order batsman Taylor, a veteran of 137 ODIs, has a calf problem, while
Milne is struggling with an elbow injury and both were ruled out of a warm-up
match for the series against Ireland in Hamilton on Saturday.
Fast-medium swing bowler Tim Southee is battling a shoulder injury but
should be fit to face the Proteas in the first of three one-day matches in Mount
Maunganui on Tuesday.
may pick him up for Twenty20 cricket
next year but if they don’t I think
he’s gone,’ Jones told Reuters
in an interview while attending
the Volvo World Match Play Golf
Championship in Kent on Thursday.
‘Kevin’s not featuring in four-day
cricket these days so he could turn
into one of those touring world T20
players. I think there’s a very good
chance we won’t see him out in the
middle again in England.’
Pietersen believes he still has
a chance of returning to the
international stage but Jones, who
played alongside the swashbuckling
batsman when England won the
Ashes in 2005 for the first time in
18 years, said his actions were at
odds with his words.
‘If you look at his performances
in the last 12 months and the fact
that he doesn’t play in the four-day
format any more, he simply can’t
play international cricket,’ said the
38-year-old who was released by
Kent at the end of last season.
‘You have to show some
commitment and desire for a county
side to warrant selection by England
to back up all the chat.
‘If Kevin’s serious he will go and
play for a county next year and
commit to everything, four-day
cricket and all, but I can’t see that
happening.’

Colombo, Oct 17 (AP):
Sri Lanka has identified 85 school
cricketers bowling with suspected
illegal actions in its campaign to
clean up the cradle of the sport in
the country.
The bowlers include 60 spinners
and 25 seamers, Sri Lanka Cricket
said in a statement on Thursday.
Sri Lanka boasts of a strong schools
cricket structure, with many players
entering the national team direct from
schools, with little or no first-class
experience.
The campaign to clean up bowling
comes amid tough action by the
International Cricket Council to
eliminate illegal bowling on the
international stage.
Offspinners suspended in recent

Lendl helped Murray win the 2013
Wimbledon and 2012 US Open and
Olympic titles before ending the
partnership after deciding he could
no longer commit the necessary

Berdych had long said he would
like to work with his countryman but
tweeted on Monday, ‘I had a great
time talking about tennis with Ivan
Lendl today. Result? Ivan would like
to help me, but he is too busy...’
Lendl was in Italy with John
McEnroe, Goran Ivanisevic and
Michael Chang ahead of senior
tour matches in Genoa and Milan.
Ivanisevic recently coached Marin
Cilic to victory at the US Open, where
he beat Kei Nishikori, coached by
Chang.
McEnroe said he had no plans to
follow them into coaching. ‘These
three have done very well, I’m the
only one here who hasn’t,’ he said. ‘I
don’t know. It’s not impossible. But no
one seems to be asking me, I don’t
know why.’
McEnroe joked that he should
coach Italian player Fabio Fognini,
who is renowned for his eccentric
behaviour. Earlier, McEnroe and
Ivanisevic laughingly agreed that
Fognini was their successor through
his similar mentality and style of play.

Despite a poor first-serve

She moved on to play Mona Barthel
after Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands

slumping to a 6-3, 6-0 loss to the
German. Barthel hit seven aces and
saved six of the seven break points
she faced. Former runner-up Annika

Mayr-Achleitner of Austria 6-2, 6-2.
Mayr-Achleitner hit four doublefaults and won less than half of the

Messi eyes
all-time Liga
scoring record
Madrid, Oct 17 (AFP):
In the week that he marked the 10th
anniversary of his competitive debut
for Barcelona, Lionel Messi could
become the all-time top scorer in the
history of La Liga.
The Argentine made his bow as a
17-year-old in a 1-0 win at city rivals
Espanyol on 16 October, 2004. Now
he is preparing to face Eibar at the
Camp Nou tomorrow needing just two
goals to equal Telmo Zarra’s all-time
Spanish top-flight record of 251, set
in the 1950s.Messi, who told fans he
was ‘constantly trying to improve and
win more titles,’ has been back at his
best in the early weeks of this season
to help the Catalans to the top of La
Liga with six wins and a draw in their
opening seven games.
They are two points clear of Valencia
and have yet to concede a goal so far,
and they will want to keep that form
going against Eibar before they go to
Real Madrid for the first Clasico of the
campaign next weekend.
‘To go into the Clasico in the best
possible condition we need to win on
Saturday,’ said left-back Jordi Alba.
Chinese players
to the fore
Pune, Oct 17 (PTI):
Grandmaster-in-waiting Aravindh
Chithamabaram played out a
nerve-wrecking draw with Peruvian
Grandmaster Jorge Cori while
Chinese duo of Lu Shanglei and
Wei Yi took control with fine victories
in the 10th round of the world junior
chess championship here yesterday.
Chithambaram enjoyed a favourable
position for a long time but eventually
saved the game by the skin of the
teeth as Cori tried hard for over
five hours before splitting the point
through repetition of moves.
Meanwhile, Lu Shanglei defeated
top seed Vladimir Fedoseev of
Russia while Wei Yi dispatched
another Russian Mikhail Antipov to
set the pace for the final three rounds
of the championship.
Both Chinese players emerged
as co-leaders on eight points each
and they both now enjoy a full point
lead over nearest rivals that include
Chithambaram, Diptayan Ghosh
and Ankit Rajpara. In the last three
rounds, it looks more like a race
between the two leaders now as
others are far away. There are as
many as 11 players in joint third spot
on seven points and India’s highest
ranked Grandmaster here Vidit
Gujrathi is among those who have
6.5 points.In the girls’ championship
being held simultaneously, defending
champion Aleksandra Goryachkina
of Russia surged ahead winning in
mere 10 moves against nearest rival
Sarasadat Khademalsharieh of Iran.
Out of a Queen pawn opening a
reckless move by Khademalsharieh
led to disaster as Goryachkina
forcibly won a piece to take her tally
to an impressive 8.5 points out of a
possible 10.

Burdwan, Oct 17:
National Security Guard (NSG) and
National Investigation Agency (NIA)
officials today seized a large stockpile
of crude hand grenades, socket bombs
and explosives from a house in Burdwan
district of West Bengal where suspected
militant Rejaul Karim used to stay.
The central security agencies found the
explosives from a secret loft constructed
after cutting the wall of a bathroom in
Rezaul’s place.
The recovery was made when the
investigators were searching the house
of Rejaul located at Mathpara on Badsahi Road near Khagragarh where the
accidental explosion on 2 October killed
two persons.
Security officials defused the bombs
at the banks of Damodar river in Burdwan area. A NIA team on Thursday
had searched the areas surrounding a
madarsa in Simulia near the explosion
site. Two women, who are now in NIA
custody, were radicalised in violent Jihadi
ideology at the madarsa.
The blast occurred in a house in
Khagragarh area killing two suspected
Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen militants and injuring another. Several people including
the two women have been arrested in

of Norway and Finland, told reporters on board his special aircraft that
neither India is ‘isolated’ nor should
it be blamed for holding World Trade
Organisation (WTO) hostage for its
demand that food security should be
made part of agreement as envisaged
in the 2013 Bali meeting.
He was replying to a question
whether India found itself isolated
for not agreeing to initiating trade
facilitation among the 160-member
world body under which custom
rules have to be liberalised for easy
movement of goods from one country to another.
India has made it clear
that it would stick to its
position on the food security
issue at the WTO as it is
the sovereign duty of the
government to protect the
interest of its poor
‘The question is not that whether
India is isolated or somebody is
blaming India. The entire African
countries have written letters to Director General of WTO that please
treat the Bali ministerial declaration
as an integrated package. We are
definitely concerned about food
security and I made it quite clear
as it was made quite clear in the
Bali Ministerial meeting which was
in continuation of the Doha devel-
opment round, that if we want to
maintain the developmental aspect,
which was agreed by all in Doha
round of discussion, food security
is an important issue there,’ he told
reporters on his while returning from
his five-day visit.
India has made it clear that it would
stick to its position on the food security issue at the WTO as it is the
sovereign duty of the government
to protect the interest of its poor
and that it would not ratify Trade
Facilitation Agreement (TFA) until
a permanent solution was found on
the food security issue.
New Delhi has asked WTO to
amend the norms for calculating agriculture subsidies so that India could
continue to procure food grains from
farmers at minimum support price and
sell them to poor at cheaper rates
without violating the norms.
The current WTO norms limit the
value of food subsidies at 10 per
cent of the total value of food grain
production. However, the quantum
of subsidy is computed after taking
into consideration prices that prevailed two decades ago.
There are apprehensions that
once India completely implements
its food security programme, it could
breach the 10 per cent cap. Breach
of the cap may lead to imposition of
hefty penalties, if a member country
drags India to the WTO.
