1st European Universities Games will be
held in Cordoba, Spain on July. There will
be also a good representation from Finland by our football, futsal and volleyball
teams from the University of Jyväskylä. It
is great to see that students from the only
Finnish faculty of sport and health sciences
are athletes also in practice by winning the
Finnish National Student Games.
ment but also between organizational and
local sectors nationally, regionally and locally. Student sports include always many
different kinds of exercising from activating
the passive ones to sport in the highest toplevel. Competing and exercising must always
be rewarding and everyone must have possibility to participate was the level of sport
whatever.
In student games it is important to beat
opponents but at the same time it is also
allowed to have fun together. Except that
competitions have an intrinsic value from
sports’ point of view, their social value is
also important by making and maintaining
international networks.
I wish good luck and success for the athletes
who are going to represent Finland in Cordoba. I also want to thank all the important
supporters at homes, in the University and in
sport clubs and other organizations.
For us it is important to support students’
physical activity and that’s why it is also
written in the Government Programme of
Finland. We have to do our best to guarantee
that students from all the universities have
good possibilities to exercise. That demands
working cooperation except in the Govern-

A Word from the Editorial Staff
You are holding the tournament leaflet of
the three teams representing Finland and
the University of Jyväskylä in the 1st European Universities Games (EUSA Games)
held in Córdoba (Spain), July 2012. The
EUSA Games is the largest European multisport student event featuring competitions in 10 different sports: basketball,
handball, football, futsal, rugby 7s, volleyball, badminton, beach volley, table tennis
and tennis. European Universities Championships have been organized in various
sports for years now; but since these EUSA
Games in Córdoba draw together athletes
of the above-mentioned sports for the very
first time, we take it as a special privilege
to be a part of this historical and colossal
student sports event.
included are the volleyball, football, and futsal
teams of the University of Jyväskylä competing
in the event. Most of the athletes and officials introduced in this leaflet have also taken part in the
previous European Universities Championships
in their respective sports. Considering the fact
that a great majority of them have been eager to
participate again, it feels safe to say that the experience and individual development possibilities gained in these international sport events are
highly appreciated.
On behalf of the teams and their members the
editorial staff wants to thank all the supporters
and benefactors, who have made our participation in the 1st EUSA Games possible. We also
want to express our gratitude to the staff and
voluntary workers organizing this historical
event. Kiitos pyyteettömyydestä!
This leaflet showcases the teams, athletes, and officials from the University of Jyväskylä and from
the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences participating in the EUSA Games 2012. The teams

Greetings from the Faculty
of Sport and Health Sciences
The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences in
the University of Jyväskylä is known for its
internationally high-level research and education. The Faculty is also well-known as an
organizer of international congresses. Knowing the field of sport sciences is ever more important in the society. The development of
population’s health, aging and growing importance of physical activity for enhancing
the public health give bigger challenges for
our faculty. Enhancing the top-level sport in
Finland is also a target of our faculty.
International sport events for university students are great possibilities to experience
strong and shared feelings that sport and
physical activity provide. I owe my warm
thanks to all of you who are organizing these
wonderful Games.
Studying and sports have many same features; ambitiousness, developing a talent,
sustainability, commitment, success and
disappointments, growth as a human and as
an athlete. Students will test these features
under the 1st European Universities Games.

I wish unforgettable flow experiences of sport
for our football, volleyball and futsal teams
and success of course.

Greetings from the volleyball team
of the University of Jyväskylä
The men´s volleyball team of the University of Jyväskylä is attending the European
Universities Championships (EUC) for the
second time. Last year was the first time we
competed on an international level in the
European Universities Volleyball Championships held in Serbia. The result was pretty
good for us first timers as we placed 6th in the
tournament and lost the place to the semifinals by the smallest possible margin. This
year our goal is to make it to the top four.
Our team comes from Jyväskylä – a city
at the heart of Finland. Jyväskylä is one of
the most active and versatile student cities
in Finland. None of our players have the
same place of birth but we all live and study
in Jyväskylä now. Our team consists of eight
students from the University of Jyväskylä and
two students from the Jyväskylä University of
Applied Sciences. All in all, we have students
from three different faculties of the University of Jyväskylä and from two educational
units of the University of Applied Sciences.
We have players from every level of the
Finnish volleyball league system: from the
fourth division to the National Volleyball
League (the premier division of Finnish volleyball). Internationally our team has a lot
of potential. All the players have experience
from international games at their youth or
last year. The brightest star of our team is
Pasi Hyvärinen, who for years has been the
number one libero of the Finnish national
team. He ranked number one in the libero statistics of the FIVB Volleyball World
League 2010.
In Finland we have a simple system to pick
the team that represents our country at the
European Universities Championship tournament. The winner of the national student
championships (OSM tournament) wins the
right to participate in the EUC tournament
next year. Our team has won the national
championship twice in a row. The team travelling to Cordoba this year is exactly the same
that won the national title this spring. Other
than that our team doesn´t play together.
We are looking forward to competing with
the best student-athletes in Europe at the
moment. Come see us play – cheers!

team of the University of Jyväskylä,

Introduction of the Finnish football
team from the University of Jyväskylä
The football team from the University of
Jyväskylä is participating in the European Universities Football Championships
(EUFC) for the fifth time in six years. First
time the football team of the University of
Jyväskylä participated in EUFC in Rome
2007 and placed 15th. The team has also
participated in the championships in
Kiev 2008 (placed 13th), in Wroclaw 2009
(placed 10th) and in Warsaw 2010 (placed
12th). After last year’s missed games in Istanbul the football team of University of
Jyväskylä is again ready to represent Finland in Cordoba on July 2012.
The Finnish football team from the University of Jyväskylä is known as a team of
sport and health science students. Every
player except one is studying in the Faculty
of Sport and Health Sciences in the University of Jyväskylä. The team was established
in 2005 and has always been conducted by
sport and health science students. Last year
ambitious students also established an own
sports club around the football team for the
sport and health science students in the University of Jyväskylä. The club is called Liikunnan Riemu and different types of sports
are practiced under it.
The football team of the University of
Jyväskylä is the last years’ most successful
student team in the Finnish Universities
Football Championships. The road to Cordoba became clear after winning the national championship in 2011. The team is also
known for its enthusiasm and diligence to
develop university sports in Finland and or-
ganize different university sports events on
the national level. The team is wholly working by good team spirit and keen attitudes
of players.
The team always tends to perform well
both on and off the field. As an indication
of that the football team from the University
of Jyväskylä was nominated as the Fair Play
team of the tournament in Wroclaw 2009
and has been a respected participant in the
European Universities Championships in
last years. This year the team seriously believes in the success also on the field and is
trying to achieve the best ranking ever for
a Finnish football team. In order to achieve
that, the team has prepared for the EUSA
games in Cordoba for a long time.
The team is looking forward to the 1st European Universities Games in Cordoba on
July 2012. Besides the good performances
on the field, the team wishes to have fun
and meet our old and new friends from all
around the Europe. The Finnish football
team is sure that the games will be fantastic
and unforgettable. The team is really thankful for being given a possibility to make
history and participate in the 1st European
Universities Games 2012 in Cordoba.

Futsal from Central Finland – KaDy Students
play for the University of Jyväskylä
Kampuksen Dynamo (KaDy), a
Finnish futsal team from Jyväskylä, achieved a promotion to the
national Futsal League (the highest level of Finnish futsal) in 2009.
Having finished 6th in its debut
league season, KaDy went on to
claim two 2nd place finishes
in a row, making a powerful
breakthrough to the national
futsal elite. At present, KaDy Monster
(in the picture) is at its highest form
thus far.
In addition to the main
squad, KaDy hosts its university student force under
the name of KaDy Students. KaDy Students
are the reigning Finnish student champion
three years in a row and reached the 7th
place (a new Finnish record) in the 7th European Universities Futsal Championships
held in Zagreb, July 2010. A year after that
KaDy Students repeated their achievement
in the 8th European Universities Futsal
Championship in Tampere, July 2011. So,
this year’s tournament in Córdoba (the 1st
EUSA games of all time) is the 3rd EUC
tournament for KaDy Students who represent the University of Jyväskylä.
KaDy Students might make recruits from
other local clubs – the criteria for recruit
being that one has to be a university student from Jyväskylä and, of course, display
some great futsal abilities. This year’s squad
(see the player cards) features
one player who comes not from
KaDy but from US Skädäm, a 1st
division (the second highest level
of Finnish futsal) team from Jyväskylä. Thus, a great majority of the
players of the Córdoba squad
are KaDy’s league players –
four of which have also appeared in the Finnish national team.
KaDy Students represent
the University of Jyväskylä. As typical for our team, the composition of
the player’s fields of study is
delightfully interdisciplinary: University of Jyväskylä comprises of seven faculties of which six are represented by the
members of our delegation.
