We’re preparing to celebrate the Mint’s 50th anniversary, marking five decades
of sharing the stories that have shaped Australia through commemorative coins.
During this time, we’ve been honoured to produce Australia’s circulating coins and
unique numismatic pieces. On our golden anniversary, we celebrate the artistry of
our coins and the industrious efforts of those who make them.
The Mint is also sharing the important story of Australia’s military history through
our new releases, from capturing the first convoy of the Australian Imperial Force
departing from Albany to join the Great War, to our poignant Remembrance Day
coin. The highly anticipated second releases from the Australia at War subscription
program honour the legendary Gallipoli Campaign, the resourceful Australian
Flying Corps and the gruelling war on the Western Front.
In keeping with the tradition of crafting memorable minted creations for
keepsake items to mark personal occasions, we have produced unforgettable
editions as charming gifts. Our new and innovative heart-shaped Eternal Love coin
is an all-encompassing expression of love, symbolising everlasting adoration and
unity for a myriad of occasions. We’re also excited to present our new playful
Alphabet Collection, capturing beloved and renowned animals with matching
letters from A to Z. Give an initial, spell a name or collect the whole set of 26!

The Royal Australian Mint is celebrating 50 proud years
of sharing the stories that have shaped Australia through
beautifully crafted coins. To mark this milestone, these special
proof and uncirculated Six Coin Year Sets showcase a unique
50 cent honeycomb design.
The humble honeycomb is a geometrically spectacular matrix,
optimising coverage while minimising construction material.
This never-before-seen design symbolises the expertise and
ingenuity of the hard working men and women at the Mint
who make world-renowned coins.

AIF SAIL FROM
ALBANY
6
On 1 November 1914, the first Australian Imperial Force
convoy sailed from Albany, transporting Australian and New
Zealand troops to the First World War.
2014 $1 Fine Silver Proof Coin These intricately designed, precious metal coins honour the
beginnings of the Anzac story and remind us that Albany
was the last that many saw of home. These coins capture the
faces of the brave, the magnificence of the convoy and a lone
horseman. The horseman’s silhouette acts as a counterpoint to
the repetition in the design. Where history remembers wars by
numbers, be it casualties or ships lost, the horseman signifies
that there is an individual story behind each fact recalled.

REMEMBRANCE DAY
8
At 11 am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western
Front fell silent, marking the end of the war after four costly
years. Since then, Remembrance Day has held a special
meaning to Australia and other nations touched by the war.

Keep an eye out for the commemorative circulating coin in your change.
The Mint is proud to release the nation’s third coloured
circulating coin, soon to appear in your change, and this
limited ‘C’ mintmark edition in honour of this significant day.
The centrally sculpted design features a dove carrying an olive
branch, whilst the outer edges of the tranquil green coloured
print are inspired by the Australian Commonwealth Military
Forces’ original ‘Rising Sun.’ These elements featured together
are representational of the peace the Armistice signified.

As the world’s most extensive coral reef ecosystem,
the Great Barrier Reef was registered as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 1981. Stretching over 2000 kilometres and
consisting of over 900 islands, it is as beautiful as it is diverse.
Displaying beauty above and below water, the reef is home
to thousands of species of coral, fish, birds and sea mammals.
In partnership with UNESCO, the Mint has captured this
spectacular natural wonder in precious metals. Showcasing
the ever-popular clownfish in its sea anemone, with its vibrant
and attractive colours captured in colour print in the silver
edition, these two new coins celebrate the iconic Australian
attraction’s unmatched natural beauty.

Orion
The constellation Orion, the giant hunter of Greek mythology,
dominates the night sky. Despite being named after a hunter,
this constellation is not discrete – its location on the celestial
equator ensures it is visible from anywhere in the world.
This exquisite silver proof, domed shape and colour printed
coin perfectly depicts Orion’s distinguishable stars amongst
the dazzling colours of the universe, emulating its presence
in the celestial sphere.
As one of the most recognised and prominent constellations,
it is only fitting to have Orion’s stars adorn the third and final
coin from the award-winning Southern Sky series.

MEET THE MINTIES
B ro n w y n K i n g C O I N D E S I G N E R
From a young age, I knew I wanted to be an artist as I loved
to draw everything. I grew up on the East Coast, so I was
inspired by my surroundings including the beaches, rainforest,
countryside and the unique Australian wildlife.
After I finished school, I studied a Bachelor Degree in Natural
History Illustration which included botanical illustrations, as well
as acquired an Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design. Together
they combined my love for nature and science with art and
digital media.
Working at the Mint, I have been able to utilise my experience
in botanical illustrations and also further refine my conceptual

development of medallic art and sculpting under the guidance
of the highly credited Wojciech Pietranik.
Being part of significant projects like the extensive Alphabet
Collection and the complex Eternal Love coin were challenging
yet exciting. I have been extremely lucky to design the coins
from the Alphabet Collection and illustrate the animals on the
packaging, capturing each animal’s individual personality.
The creativity and fun in the coin design studio doesn't stop.
I am currently working on several new exciting projects which
explore varied themes and design styles, to be released soon
for our collectors to enjoy!

Shells and bullets he completely disregarded …
to the wounded he was gentleness itself. 1
The simplicity of the coin’s design allows his story of courage
under fire to speak for itself.
In 1900 Captain Neville Howse of the NSW Medical Staff Corps
became the first Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross medal
for gallantry in the face of the enemy.
During action in South Africa, Sir Neville Howse VC saw a man
fall wounded. He charged through heavy gunfire to rescue the
man, continuing on foot when his horse was shot from under
him. His grandson who currently resides in Canberra,
Jon Howse, speaks of his illustrious ancestor with pride.
“He was a great humanitarian for his time, always focused on
the welfare of the wounded, regardless of what side they had
been fighting on.”
In 2000, the Mint paid tribute to Major General Sir Neville
Reginald Howse VC KCB KCMG, with a commemorative
$1 uncirculated coin. This is one of many military themed coins
within the National Coin Collection.
The 2000 $1 coin bears an image of the Victoria Cross medal,
Sir Neville Howse VC’s name and the date of his award.

Where is the mobile coin press?
Mint takes home Comcare 2014 Health and Safety Award
As we reflect on the centenary of the first convoy of the
AIF embarking from Albany, the Mint will have the mobile
coin press at the Anzac Albany commemorative event from
30 October to 2 November 2014. For the first time we will
be counterstamping an ‘AL’ on the highly sought after
2014 $1 Circulating Coin – 100 Years of Anzac – The Spirit Lives.
We will also be attending Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance
on Remembrance Day, 11 November 2014 and
counterstamping an ‘M’ for Melbourne coin, also on the
100 Years of Anzac circulating coin. If you can’t visit us in Albany
or Melbourne, you can contact your local dealer to express your
interest in obtaining one of these coins.
At the annual Comcare Awards in Melbourne, the Mint
was declared the winner of the Workplace Health and
Safety Management System category. We also received a
commendation for our health initiative WellMint and were a
finalist in the Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and
Safety Hazard award category. Well done team!
