50TH ANNIVESARY OF THE MINT
COLOURED COIN AND
SIX COIN YEAR SET
6
The Royal Australian Mint is celebrating 50 proud years of
sharing the stories that have shaped the nation through
beautifully crafted coins, which Australians have spent, saved
and collected. To mark this milestone, the striking 50 cent
honeycomb design has been expertly colour printed, featuring
a golden gradient to emphasise ‘50’ within the pattern.
Inspired by the geometrically spectacular matrix of the
honeycomb, the design is symbolic of the expertise of the
hard working Mint employees who craft world-renowned coins.
The popular and long standing Six Coin Year Sets in proof
and uncirculated finish also showcase this symmetrical
dodecagon honeycomb pattern. On our golden anniversary,
our exclusive proof set includes a gold-plated 50 cent coin.

AUSTRALIAN HONOURS
AUSTRALIAN BRAVERY
14
This exquisite coin commemorates the brave civilians and
service and emergency personnel presented with awards from
the Australian Honours System, introduced on 14 February 1975
to recognise acts of incredible courage and selfless heroism.
Following the sell-out success of the 2014 $10 Copper Antique
A History of the Victoria Cross Coin, this Australian Bravery coin
is another unique piece, utilising the rare process of entirely
gold plating a fine silver coin. The reverse depicts the
Cross of Valour and lists the five recipients of this medal
whilst the obverse features the George Cross and the names of
the 22 recipients of this award, as well as Ian Rank-Broadley's

ANZAC CENTENARY COIN PROGRAM
100TH ANNIVERSARY OF
THE GALLIPOLI LANDING
16
The Anzac legend was forged on the beaches and hillsides
of Gallipoli, where Australians and New Zealanders fought
and often died side-by-side. The costly campaign from
25 April 1915 resulted in more than 26,000 Australian
casualties, of which 8000 died.
Struck in fine silver and gold to mark the 100th anniversary of
the first Gallipoli Landing, these special editions depict
the Lone Pine tree which inspired the name of one of the
most renowned battles of the Gallipoli Campaign, the Battle of
Lone Pine. A memorial at Lone Pine records the names of 5000
Australians and New Zealanders with no known graves who
died during the eight month campaign.

The Royal Australian Mint has created one of the most
moving and poignant designs to date, marking the

often used to mark unknown graves.
Presented in aluminium bronze with a ‘C’ mintmark and
‘S,’‘B’ and ‘M’ privy marks for the four coin set and also
with precious metal editions in fine silver or gold with a
‘C’ mintmark, the Anzac Centenary releases are fitting for
those looking to mark this historic anniversary.

On 1 November 1914, the opening chapter of the Anzac story
was written when the first convoy of the Australian Imperial
Force set sail from Albany to Egypt bound for the First World War.
The intricately designed fine silver proof and extremely limited

the silhouette of a lone horseman acts as a counterpoint to

MEET THE MINTIES
Wayne Hennock
P lannin g and S c h edulin g Offi c er
It is fitting on our 50th anniversary to introduce the Mint’s
longest working employee, Wayne Hennock. Wayne applied
for a job at the Mint 39 years ago, when he was 17 years old.
“When I first started in the Tool Room, there were over 400
people working with me. Since then, I’ve worked in every area
from Coin Hall, Drawing Office, Engraving, Die Polishing, Blank
Preparation and now my favourite role in Planning.”
The most memorable project for Wayne was being part of the
2000 Olympic Games Medals program. “I was able to work with
different metals and be hands-on in the process, making the
dies, die polishing and coining the medals. Knowing that some

of the best athletes in the world have the medals I helped
craft is very fulfilling.”
His time at the Mint has allowed him to witness significant
changes, from the advancements in master tooling, the
utilisation of Automated Guided Vehicles (robots) and
outsourcing blanks. “All the blanks were made at the Mint
when I started with melting furnaces, rolling mills and blanking
presses. That’s the special thing about working here, there are
always new designs and products, new and more efficient ways
to do things that keeps it interesting. I’m excited to see what the
next fifty years has in store for the Mint.”
FROM THE VAULT
E ri c Cle m en t s ' S il v er Cen t repie c e
The Mint is the custodian of Australia’s National Coin Collection,
featuring significant historical coins and notable numismatic
marvels from Australia and further afield. Many people don’t
know that the collection includes a wide variety of items other
than coins as well. A silver centerpiece presented in honour of
the Mint’s opening is one such little gem.
We were delighted to be able to show them the
centerpiece and share the story about how it arrived in
Australia. Now located in the Mint’s boardroom, the
centrepiece has been on display several times in the past.
The crown resembles interlocked coins and at one point
was being considered as the basis of a logo for the Mint.
Crafted by silversmith Eric Clements, it was presented to
the Mint in 1967 on behalf of the Worshipful Company of
Goldsmiths of London. Mrs Julie Jones and her family had
traced a family link to Mr Clements and paid a visit to the Mint
last year to see the item for themselves.
Visit the Mint to see for yourself that coins aren’t the
only treasures to be found here.
