Ending Hunger One Step at a Time
Pinchot Park Hunger Walk to be held Sunday
October 12. Registration is at 1 p.m. and the walk

Road/York Side) The Pinchot Park Hunger Walk distributes twenty-five percent of their funding equally

and other international agencies and their relief and
development programs.
Dillsburg Garden Club to meet
The monthly meeting of the Dillsburg Garden
Club will be held on Monday, November 3, at 7 p.m. at
the Maple Shade Barn, 35 Greenbrier Lane, Dillsburg.
Annette Macoy, a Cumberland County Master
Gardener, will present a program on "Conifers and
Christmas." A brief business meeting will follow the
presentation and light refreshments will be served.

work
Trinity Lutheran Church in East Berlin will be hosting a public supper and silent auction on Saturday Oct.
18 from 4 to7 p.m. Tickets are $13 and include turkey
and beef dinner including sides and drinks. Contact the

The Saturday Market at Maple Shade Barn in
Dillsburg will return starting Nov ember 1 in the headquarters of the Northern York County Historical and
Preservation Society located at 35 Greenbrier Lane,
Dillsburg. Gift markets take over when farmer’s markets close for the year and this market will offer a large
selection of local crafters and unique gift vendors each
Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from
November 1 to December 20.

will be open. A light lunch menu including a specialty

Fall History series beginning in Carlisle
The Cumberland County Historical Society will be
holding its fall history series every Monday evening
from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. September 15 through October
27 in Todd Hall, 21 N. Pitt Street, Carlisle. The theme
of this year’s seven sessions is “A People and a Land.”
To a lesser but no less significant degree than the
urban areas of the eastern seaboard, the Cumberland
Valley was settled by waves of different peoples, what
they found here and what they made of it are ways to
tell the history of the area from the pre-colonial Native
Americans to the 21st Century. The series consists of
lectures and audience discussion. It will be enhanced
with PowerPoint tours of relevant county sites and
objects of interest from local collections and the
Historical Society’s archives.
The cost is $50 for members and $75 for nonmembers or $12 per session this event is CAIU Act 48
approved. An additional CAIU fee of $5 per teacher per

Ghost Tours coming to the Cameron Mansion
Enjoy a spooky visit to the John Harris-Simon
Cameron Mansion at 219 South Front Street in
Harrisburg. There will be guided Ghost Tours through
the mansion on October 31 at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The first tour will be suitable for families and children,
and the second tour is recommended for adults. The
guide will tell ghost stories of old Harrisburg and give
visitors a rare peek of the mansion by candlelight.
Admission is $15 for adults ($10 for members of the
Historical Society). Children 12 and under are $5.

The Harris-Cameron Mansion was built c. 1766
by John Harris, Jr., one of the founders of Harrisburg.
In 1863, it was purchased by Simon Cameron,
Lincoln’s first Secretary of War and later Ambassador
to Russia. Cameron transformed the Georgian house
into a stylish Victorian mansion and lived there until his
death in 1889. The house became the headquarters of
the historical society in 1941.
The Historical Society of Dauphin County was
founded in 1869 to collect, preserve, exhibit, publish,
and promote interest in the history of Dauphin County
for the education, enjoyment, and benefit of the public.

Fall Fest coming to Pine Grove Furnace
Pine Grove Furnace State park will be holding the
6th annual Fall Furnace Festival at the Fuller Lake
Area on Saturday, October 18 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
and Sunday, October 19 from noon to 5 p.m. The festival features food and craft vendors, live entertainment, environmental education programs, historical
demonstrations, live birds of prey, hikes, hayrides,
silent auction, pumpkin carving and painting, scarecrow making, kids crafts and campsite decorating.
Saturday night's event is the Hairy Hand Pumpkin
Float Program at Fuller Beach at 7 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help with the festival. If
you are planning to attend the festival, please sign up
to help for a couple hours while you are here?
Volunteers are needed to set-up, clean-up, help with
activity stations, and be Smokey Bear. If you cannot
attend the festival please consider donating adult or
children’s long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Please

The Caring Closet open in October
The Caring Closet of the West Shore Evangelical
Free Church in Mechanicsburg will be open on Friday,
October 17, 8:30 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to
attend. Please bring proof of identification.
There will be a time of worship and prayer from
8:30 to 9 a.m. Used clothing and shoes will be available from 9 a.m. to noon for anyone who has a need.
First come, first served.
A children's program will run throughout the morning so that parents can browse while their children are
cared for by dependable volunteers. A lite brunch will
also be available at 10:30 a.m. giving guests an
opportunity to visit and fellowship with church staff and
volunteers.

Trunk or Treat to be held
Celebration Community Church, 1048 South
Mountain Road, Dillsburg will be holding Trunk or Treat
on October 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. This evening of fun
includes activities, light refreshments and fellowship at
a safe alternative to trick or treating. They will have
cars decorated for children to walk around a well lit
parking lot and receive treats. This event is open to
the public and if interested in participating in decorating
a vehicle and handing out treats, call 432-5662
between the hours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday thru
Friday.
Please note: If you and/or your child/ren are
planning to attend this event, they ask that there be no
scary costumes or scary decorated vehicles. There
will be a prize given for the best decorated vehicle.
Weight lost ministry meeting
Crossroads Bible Church, 1022 York Road,
Monroe Township, on Route 74 north from Dillsburg,
will be starting a new ministry for "Healthy Lifestyles
and Weight Loss". The first meeting will be on October
12 at 5 p.m. Please park in the rear of the church and
enter through the rear doors. This is free to the public.

Camp Hill Woman’s Club to hold meeting
The Camp Hill Woman’s Club will have its
October meeting on Tuesday, October 14 at 7 p.m. at
the Camp Hill Borough Hall, 2145 Walnut Street. The
program will feature Shelley Brooks, Director of
Bethesda Mission Women and Children Shelter. All
women in our surrounding communities are invited to

Student Ambassador Travel Opportunities
available
The People to People Student Ambassador
Program will be presenting an informational meeting
for educational summer travel and learning opportunities for students currently in grades 5 through 12 to
introduce the 2015 summer travel itineraries at 7 p.m.
on Wednesday, October 15, at E. H. Markle
Intermediate School Auditorium, 225 Bowman Road,
Hanover.
Grades 5 and 6 will learn about the opportunity to
learn about the Iditarod and experience fantastic
mountains, cool wildlife, and delicious seafood when
they travel to Alaska on the Northern Expeditions program.
Grades 7 through 12 will learn about the Modern
and Ancient Civilizations program traveling to Italy,
Sicily, Greece, and Crete where they will visit sights
such as Pompeii, the Roman catacombs, the
Coliseum, Athens, and Olympia.
All students who are interested in traveling as a
student ambassador are invited to attend with their

Luncheon and fashion show in York benefits
Scholarship fund
The Garden Club of York will hold Oktoberfest of
Flowers and Fashion featuring a floral design presentation followed by a luncheon and fashion show on
October 18 at the Country Club of York, 1400 Country
Club Road, York. This event will benefit of the scholarship fund. The club awards several $1000 scholarships to York-area students entering college in the
fields of landscape design, environmental studies and
associated areas of study.
This event is open to the public so come join the
fun, support a great cause, possibly win a door prize.
Doors will open to the public at 11:30 AM for the floral
design demonstration. Luncheon will be served at
noon featuring a walk-around style fashion show during lunch presented by Susie's, Old Tollgate Village,
York, Pennsylvania.

Yard Sale benefits Mechanicsburg School district families
Operation Wildcat Yard Sale. Operation Wildcat,
a service organization in the Mechanicsburg School
district that helps families in need, is holding a yards on
October 24 and 25 at Mechanicsburg Brethren in
Christ Church .

Since 2006 operation wildcat has been holding
yard sales (with items donated from in and around the
community) with all proceeds being turned into gift
cards to local businesses. Since our 1st yard sale
back in 2006 we have raised over $41,000. There is

St. John’s Church celebrates Heritage Day
Heritage Day will be celebrated at St. John's
Franklin Church on October 19. The morning worship
will begin at 10:45, followed by a WW II remembrance
in the cemetery and a covered dish lunch in the lower
level. This is a celebration of the churches of Faith
United Lutheran Parish (Barrens, Emmanuel, and St.
John's,) their members, and the community. Scripture
readings will be in German, the original language of the
churches. Any vintage clothing is welcomed. The
church is located on Franklin Church Road, south of
Dillsburg.
CALC to host "en plein air" gallery
In the upper gallery at Carlisle Arts Learning
Center will host an exhibit of oils, acrylics, watercolors
and pastels by the SVPAP, a group of artists practicing
the tradition of "en plein air". They will be working and
completing their work on-site. The group will host a
reception on Saturday, October 11 from 6 to 8 p.m.
