Qualifications
The Superintendent of Schools serves as the chief executive officer of the school system and is
responsible to the Board of Education for ensuring compliance with all board policies, Georgia
Board of Education rules and regulations, and state and federal laws. Candidates will be evaluated
on their professional merits, with emphasis on the following criteria:
Required:
 Hold a valid professional certificate in the field of Educational Leadership from the Georgia
Professional Standards Commission at the L-6 level. Eligibility information is available from

 Experience as a classroom teacher
 Of good moral character; not convicted of any crime involving moral turpitude *
 Has no immediate family member serving on the Meriwether Board of Education or
employed as an administrator in the school district after July 1, 2009 *
* Required by Georgia Law
Preferred:
 Holds a terminal degree: (Ph.D., Ed.D.)
 Successful experience as a superintendent, central office administrator or as a principal in
the Southeastern United States
A documented history of:
 Outstanding leadership skills in administration
 Leadership skills in curriculum/instruction; a strong instructional leader
 A powerful and deep-seated belief that all students can learn and an unrelenting
determination to fully prepare them for the most meaningful life experience that each child
can achieve; a visionary who implements innovative approaches to education
 A team-building approach to educational leadership and a commitment to fostering
cooperative relationships among the school district, the board of education and community
leaders and organizations
 Public relations abilities, participation in community organizations, other community affairs
and a demonstrated ability to draw upon professional organizations to enhance his/her
effectiveness
 Sound fiscal management, including budgeting and educational finance
 Successful experience in personnel management
 Leadership in strategic planning and goal setting
 Successful leadership in the use of technology in all aspects of the education environment
 High standards of ethical and moral conduct; a role model
 High expectations of students in the areas of academics, discipline, and extracurricular
involvement
 Experience in responding to the challenges of changing enrollment
 A documented history of delegating authority

Salary and Benefits
A negotiated compensation arrangement with a mix of salary and benefits.
The Board of Education
The Meriwether County Board of Education consists of five members:
 Leon Coverson – 17 years of service on the Board.
 Robert Hawk – 5 years of service on the Board.
 Allen Parham – 4 years of service on the Board.
 Seth McInvale – 1.75 years of service on the Board.
 Willie A. Hinton, Jr. – 1.75 years of service on the Board.

a formal letter of application indicating a desire to be considered a candidate

a resume that lists at least three references

The Community
Meriwether County is located in west-central Georgia, about sixty miles south of Atlanta. The
county includes Greenville, the county seat, Warm Springs and several other charming towns. The
community is proud to have shared its beautiful land and soothing springs with President Franklin
Roosevelt. He made Warm Springs famous, as he would stay at his “Little White House” each
winter for over 20 years. Fishing, hiking, camping and more are available for the outdoor
enthusiast. The community has a business-friendly attitude and is centrally located between the
metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Macon, and Columbus.

Notice of Disclosure:
At least 14 calendar days prior to the meeting at which final action or vote is to be taken on the
position of superintendent, all documents concerning as many as three persons under
consideration whom the board has determined to be the best qualified for the position shall be
subject to inspection and copying. The board can vote on the appointment at any time after the
14-day period.
