The Port of Turku is the centre of Scandinavian traffic in Finland and offers fast
and frequent ship connections between
Turku and Stockholm. The development
of the passenger and cargo transports
on the route is further speeded up by
the new vessels and investments in the
services for both leisure passengers and
cargo professionals.
Thanks to its good connections and a
wide range of services the Port has been
accepted as a part of the TEN-T network
which forms the logistical backbone of
the EU. Furthermore, the Port actively
promotes the Northern Growth Corridor
project reaching from Stockholm to St.
Petersburg which aims at improving the
efficiency, safety and environmental
soundness of traffic and transports
through intelligent services.
The Port and its partners have initiated a
number of development projects based
on the needs expressed by different
customer groups. The most important
ones include promoting the logistics
construction in the Pansio Harbour,
expansion of the truck parking area,
and building an LNG terminal in Pansio.
We will make an effort to forward all of
those projects in 2014.
You are welcome to use the diverse range
of services offered by the Port of Turku!
Efficient connections to Sweden are
supplemented by regular liner traffic to
Germany and England. There are also
weekly departures to Norway, Denmark
and Poland. The diverse range of routes
provides an efficient logistics corridor
through the Port of Turku all the way to
the Mediterranean countries.

The Port of Turku is a modern European
port that provides efficient services to
cargo and passenger transports in the
Baltic Sea region. The Port’s services to
vessel traffic are complemented by our
partners’ modern terminal and warehousing services, and logistical value
added services. Thanks to the diverse
services the Port and its partners form
an efficient logistics hub that has the
will, capacity and resources to develop
according to the needs of its customers
and partners.
As the centre for Scandinavian transports in Finland the Port of Turku plays
an important role in the transport chains
of both Finnish export industries and
imports. The Port’s definite strengths
are frequent scheduled ship routes, and
good road connections to the Helsinki
metropolitan area, the west coast and
further hinterland. The Port of Turku is
also part of the E18 development corridor
that reaches all the way to St Petersburg
and forms the EU’s most important route
to Russia. You are welcome to use our

The Port of Turku is the leading passenger
harbour for Scandinavian traffic and
number two in Finland measured by the
total number of passengers.
Passenger traffic comprises frequent
ferry connections between Finland
and Sweden as well as cruise traffic in
the Baltic Sea. The route to Sweden is
operated by two shipping companies,
Tallink Silja and Viking Line, using modern
passenger ferries. There are four daily
departures from Turku, two in the
morning and two in the evening. There
is a separate quay at the mouth of the
River Aura reserved for cruise liners
visiting Turku within a short distance
from the sights and services at the heart
of the city.

Passenger
harbour
Linnanaukko
The Linnanaukko area serves unitised
cargo transports as well as lo-lo and bulk
transports. With good road connections,
the area also houses the biggest privately
owned lorry terminals in the port.
The railway to the Port supports traffic
and enables combining sea transports
with rail transports. The Linnanaukko
area offers the possibility for transfer
loading of railway carriages. There is
also a loading area specially designed
for transfer loading of long goods which
allows for loading pieces as long as 120
metres.

The West Harbour is designed to serve
ro-ro transports and the growing international container transports. The two
container terminals and four lightweight
halls in the area allow for handling of
cargo whatever the weather. Turku
Container Terminal (TCT) utilises stateof-the-art technology and enables the
loading and unloading of containers in
the Port’s facilities instead of the customer’s premises.

West Harbour
Free Zone
Company and
the Ovako area
Turku Free Zone Company is located in
the immediate vicinity of the port’s ro-ro
berths. Nearly 30 hectares of guarded
field areas especially serve the imports
of cars and agricultural machines. The
warehouses in the area offer 30,000
m2 indoor storage space, part of which
is temperature-regulated and suited to
storage of foods. There are also various
cargo handling services available.
The Ovako area is one of the largest
and most modern logistics clusters in
Finland. The total floor area of the biggest
distribution and warehousing terminals in the area is around 72,000 m2.
The Ovako area is also the location of
specialised logistics services for different
branches of industry, large lorry terminals, and companies operating in the
metal industry.

Pansio Harbour

The Port of Turku is the second biggest
passenger harbour in Finland, where
the passenger traffic consists of cruise
and scheduled traffic between Turku
and Stockholm. The route through the
beautiful archipelago goes from Turku to
Åland Islands and further to Stockholm.
The shipping companies operating on
the route, Viking Line and Tallink Silja,
upgraded their fleet considerably in 2013
and increased the passenger capacity
on the route. At the same time, both
companies have continued to develop
their services, allowing them to offer
their customers travel experiences that
meet today’s needs and expectations.
The Port of Turku has prepared for the
increase in the passenger volume by
reorganising the traffic arrangements in
the passenger harbour. As a result, the
traffic flows more smoothly and safely
and passengers can get more quickly
in and out of the ships. In addition to
passengers, the speed benefits the shipping companies, as improved traffic flow
relieves their tight schedule.

The passenger traffic between Turku and
Stockholm is operated by four vessels,
which allows the passengers to choose
from two morning and two evening
departures.
The newest vessel on the route is M/S
Viking Grace which made her maiden
voyage in January 2013. Viking Line’s
innovative vessel is the world’s first large
passenger ship that uses completely
sulphur-free liquefied natural gas as fuel.
The popular M/S Amorella is the other
Viking Line vessel sailing between Turku
and Stockholm.
Tallink Silja operates between Turku
and Stockholm with two sister ships.
M/S Baltic Princess and M/S Silja Galaxy
are the shipping company’s newest
passenger/car ferries, built at the end
of the first decade of the 2000s. The
modern technology used in these vessels
also reduces the environmental impacts
of vessel traffic in the sensitive archipelago area.
All vessels operating on the route offer
a diverse range of entertainment and
restaurants, as well as excellent shopping
opportunities and conference services.

The Port of Turku is one of the most
important unit load ports in Finland. The
Port’s core traffic comprises of regular
liner connections to Scandinavia and the
ports in the Baltic Sea region.
The key routes go to Sweden and
Germany. There are five daily departures
to Sweden and several weekly departures to Germany. The cargo capacity
on the route between Turku and Norway
is more than doubled with the introduction of a new vessel. It also offers a
direct weekly connection to Poland and
Denmark. In addition, the Port of Turku
offers regular connections to England
and the large ports on the North Sea
with further connections to ocean lines
around the world.
The focus of the Port’s cargo transports
lies in truck, trailer and container transports which are being developed with
attention to the customers’ wishes and
needs. In addition to unit load traffic,
services for liquid bulk cargo are available especially in the Pansio area. Efficient vessel services speed up the loading
and unloading of vessels, and the service
range of the partners covers all logistics
needs of the business world.

Truck transports in the Port of Turku
continue to grow vigorously. On average,
more than one thousand trucks arrive
in the port every day, so developing the
conditions for the services for heavy
vehicles is one of the Port’s key development goals. The spearhead project
for the next few years is the expansion
of the truck parking area. The planned
expansion will more than double the
capacity and bring another unmanned
filling station in the area. The project is
due for completion in 2015.
The shipping companies operating
between Turku and Stockholm have
responded to the demand by increasing
their capacity. The new passenger/car
ferries introduced on the route in 2013
increased the truck capacity by nearly
600 lane metres.

The location of the Port of Turku at the
junction of the key traffic routes of the
Baltic Sea has made it one of the most
important distribution hubs in Finland
and the leading one in terms of Scandinavian transports. It has generated a
major logistics cluster around the port,
covering the whole of the Turku region.
The companies operating in the Ovako
area, next to the Port, offer a total of
around 75,000 m2 of modern and efficient warehouse and terminal facilities.
There is around 10,000 m2 of warehouse
space in Pansio, and negotiations on
new construction projects are in their
final stages. In addition, the Port offers
over 500,000 m2 of guarded tarmac
field areas.
The business operations that serve the
logistics needs of the Port’s customers
have expanded considerably especially in
the vicinity of the E18 motorway. Terminals of large companies specialising in
road transports are located in the Turku
Airport area, the Kuninkoja district in
Raisio and the Luolala district in Naantali, and Itella’s transport hub is situated
in the Avanti area in Lieto.

The Port of Turku is one of the most
important foreign trade ports and logistics hubs in Finland. The Port’s strong
position as the route for imported
and exported goods is emphasised by
the approval as part of the TEN-T core
network of the European Union.
In the TEN-T, the Port of Turku is included
in both the Nordic Triangle and the
Motorway of the Baltic Sea. The Nordic
Triangle connects the Scandinavian
countries to the Russian markets. The
Motorway of the Baltic Sea offers a costefficient route from the northern shores
of the Baltic Sea to the key market areas
of the European Union.
The most important traffic project for the
future of the Port is the Northern Growth
Corridor that leads from Stockholm via
Turku, Helsinki and Kotka to St Petersburg. The route is based on the E18 road,
and the goal is to turn it into an international growth corridor that will make
the traffic and transports safer and more
efficient and environmentally sound, as
well as strengthening the competitiveness of the local businesses in the international markets.

Good connections
to all over Finland
In addition to good sea connections,
the Port of Turku offers efficient road
connections to cargo transports, and
their further development is promoted
in close co-operation with different local
players.
The long-awaited renovation of Suikkilantie road was completed in late 2013.
The road now has four lanes on the
stretch between Pansiontie road and
Highway 8. Together with clear traffic
arrangements it opens a fast and uncongested access to the key transport routes
in Finland.
The renovation of Highway 8 commenced
simultaneously with the completion of
Suikkilantie road. The goal is to make
the main route of goods transports on
the west coast safer, faster and more
efficient. The flow of the port traffic
on the E18 road will be enhanced by
the improvements being implemented
on Ring I in Helsinki. The next goal is
to widen the Turku by-pass road to
have four lanes all the way to the E18
motorway.

For a cleaner
Baltic Sea
The Port of Turku was among the first to
introduce environmental port charges
in 2006. In addition to the discounts
granted on the basis of the sulphur
content of the fuel and the nitrogen emissions of the vessels, the vessels can also
receive discount on waste management
charges if the waste is sorted in the way
approved by the Port. The charge principles are being developed further, and the
Port is also examining the possibilities to
introduce environmental grounds to the
pilotage and fairway charges collected
by the State.
The Port is preparing for the Sulphur
Directive that will enter into force in 2015
by creating conditions for the distribution
of environmentally safe liquefied natural
gas (LNG). The completely sulphur-free
LNG generates no particle emissions and
its nitric oxide emissions are as much as
90% lower compared with heavy fuel oil.
The letter of intent between the Port of
Turku and Gasum on building an LNG
terminal in the Pansio Harbour aims
at starting the distribution by the end
of 2015.
