investigator. Attending the University of Detroit
Law School at night, Gottfried graduated with
honors and was promoted to an attorney

Gottfried was regional director in an area
where brilliant practitioners and legends of the
labor movement abounded; he was highly
respected in the field. His decisions were wellreasoned and fair, and he never forgot that
real people were involved when he made his
decisions. His untimely death left a gap in the
legal and labor communities.
