WORD OF THE MONTH CREATIVITY
Creativity involves curiosity, enthusiasm, motivation, courage
innovation and imagination.
“When you're curious, you find lots of interesting things to do.”
Walt Disney
This month creativity is the key to success in training.
Creativity involves implementing and enjoying the “Black Belt
Qualities” of curiosity, courage, innovation, motivation and
enthusiasm.
Curiosity is the driving force behind learning and sharing martial
arts knowledge. It fuels creativity as a means to find the answers
to questions.
Courage is a Black Belt Quality that ensures success. Without the
courage to pursue a creative martial arts endeavor or the courage
to explore an unknown training area no progress would be made.

“Be Creative!”
CREATIVITY
continued
Problem solving is a key element in training
the martial arts. The ability to recognize a
problem and the creativity used to create a
solution is known as innovation.
Motivation stems from your ultimate reason
to succeed. Creativity fuels motivation by
bringing the element of excitement into
training. Excitement in turn creates
enthusiasm, an intense or eager enjoyment
for training.
Use creativity for
enthusiastic training!
Creativity at Link’s Martial Arts is shared
with the students in many ways.
Extreme Excellence Members explore
martial arts creativity through the joining of
martial arts techniques and acrobatic skills
that are set to music. Furthermore, they
explore creative weapon manipulation called
bo tricking or XMA weapons.
Students in all LMA classes are challenged
through drills and creative activities as a
learning tool to grow and achieve success.
There are many creative ways to practice
1. Free flow techniques to music.
2. Practice the same technique in multiple
ways. Example, a front kick. Practice into
the air, against a wave master, with a
partner, in a circle, hold for balance.
3. Forms - practice hands only, feet only,
slow motion, in a small apace, like a
drunken monkey
4. Practice Self defense using creative
scenarios
5. Practice in a swimming pool, at a park or
in the back yard.
“Take an ordinary life and make it
extraordinary.”
ELITE Team Members explore creativity

to music. They create original sets and learn
to bring creativity to traditional material.

Black Belt Candidates are given creativity

September 20, 2014
Mr. Skell has earned
his place as the
second highest
ranking student in the
Jiu Jitsu program
behind Todd Fristed,
who graduated to his
black belt in 2013.
Early in Mr. Skell’s
training he
consistently grappled
with students of
higher rank. Although
at times this may have
frustrated him, it truly
made him a better
grappling student.
Mr. Skell has always
appreciated and
enjoyed the grappling
art. As a martial artist
he has explored
multiple seminars to
improve his skill set.
which is a close
cousin to Jiu Jitsu.
Additionally, Mr.
Skell is the only adult
who has represented
Link’s Martial Arts at
the National Disney
Tournament where he
competed in the
International Sport
Grappling
Association Division.
Mr. Skell grew and
learned much from his
participation at this
event.
Every martial artist
faces road blocks and
Mr. Skell is no
exception. He
struggled with
challenges along his
path, accepted and let
go, set his mind to
what needed to be
done, and made the
changes in his mindset
that were necessary to
succeed.
As a Master Instructor
it is rewarding to see
students through to
the completion of
their goals. We look
forward to Mr. Eric
Skell’s future growth
in body, mind and
spirit!
