Parish Mission Statement
“The Parish of Saint John XXIII is a faith community with the Eucharist as its heart.
We are inspired by John XXIII’s prophetic opening of the windows of the Church.
We welcome the fresh air of the Holy Spirit, inviting every person to share in the responsibility of enriching the
life and faith of our community by sharing their gifts and talents.”
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time: 18/19 October 2014
Dear friends in Christ Jesus,
Today’s Gospel challenges us to live Jesus through the society
where we live in. We have an obligation to give back to Caesar
what is his due an obligation to God what is His due.
The question that the disciples of Pharisees and Herodians asked
Jesus was a loaded one. Though both of them differ in their ideologies they are united in their common desire to eliminate
Jesus. The Pharisees resented paying taxes to a foreign king as
an infringement of the divine law. On the other hand, the Herodians were the supporters of King Herod and his family favoured the collaboration with the Romans and paying tax to
Caesar. Jesus recognizes the trap and gives a response that applies to all the centuries, “Give back to Caesar what belongs to
Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”
Jesus does not specify the things that belong to Caesar, for Caesar does not possess anything independently of God.
Since, God has dominion over everything; Caesar’s relative
power is subservient to the ultimate power of God. So, ultimately we need to live Jesus through the society. All authority and
power have to be evaluated in the light of God.
God Bless you all.
Kind Regards, Fr. Robert

REFLECTION
Who can separate his
from his actions, or his
belief from his
occupations?
Who can spread his hours
before him, saying:
This for God and this for
myself; this for my soul
and this other for my
body?
He who wears his morality but as his best garment
were better naked.
Your daily life is your
temple and your religion.
Whenever you enter into
it take with you your all.
Take the plough and the
forge and the mallet and
the lute, the things you
have fashioned in
necessity of for delight.
And take with you all
men.
And if you would know
God….look about you
and you will see him
playing with your
children.

Prophet, William

PARISH NEWS
From the Parish Council
Bart Sarlabus Chair
From the first Weekend of October,
Saturday Reconciliation will be from
5.00 - 5.45pm.
“Let us take courage, and rejoice in the Lord. This is the
medicine that quietens all our impatience, sweetens our
privations and makes us full of joy, even when we are
experiencing life’s bitterness.” – Journal of a Soul, St.
John XXIII, 20 December 1902
Volunteers are needed!
Please consider offering yourselves to
minister in one of the parish groups
including the RCIA, the Baptism
Preparation programme, the Children’s
Sacramental Programme, or Community
Outreach.
The 2015 Columban Art Calendar is now
available at the Piety Stall for $7.00. When
you purchase the
calendar, you are participating in God’s
Mission and assisting
Columbans in meeting the needs
of the poor.
PASTORAL ASSOCIATE & SACRAMENTAL
CO-ORDINATOR—SUE ANDRUSKIN
We invite everyone to join the SJ23 Prayer Group in its
monthly Praise and Worship Night this Saturday, 18 October
from 7:30 to 9 PM.
We are reviewing three options for the SJ23 Wall of Remembrance, namely a 3D bas relief cast bronze plaque, an integrated bronze image plaque and a stainless steel baked
enamel plaque. The choice of which one to get depends on
the cost and the time to produce it. We hope to have this wall
dedicated by Sunday, 2 Nov 2014, however, this timing is
very tight. We are continuing to raise funds for these, so
please see me regarding monetary pledges and/or services
like rendering of the wall or landscaping of the wall area.
We reiterate our invitation for volunteers for the new Parish
Hospitality team who will be the “face” of the community at
masses, sacramental programs and other pastoral activities.in 2015, so interested parishioners may sign up at the
Parish Office or email me. The core unit of the team, however, will be formed as soon as Fr. John comes back from his
holiday, so the earlier you register interest, the better.
The Oct. 21 rotation of the SJ23 weekly rosary devotion will
be hosted by the Sebastian family at 2 Armour Ave,
Kellyville Ridge. Host families for Nov. 18 onward are
needed.
Have a great week! Bart

We are still in need of facilitators to lead the
children and parents in the sessions in preparation for First Reconciliation. The sessions are to
be held on the first two Saturday afternoons or
Sunday mornings in November. If you think
that you could help please contact Sue at the
parish office as soon as possible.
If you require the services of a Justice of the
Peace to sign a document for you, please note
that this service will no longer be available at
the parish office after the end of November.
Call Sue to make an appointment before then.
The Sacramental calendar for 2015 can now be
seen on the Sacramental notice board in the
church foyer and also on the parish website
www.john23rd.org.au . If you know of families
wanting to know the dates for the sacraments
