announces that County State
Aid Highway (CSAH) 3
from CSAH 37 in Crosslake
to CSAH 1 is open to through
traffic.

joins Essentia
Nurse
Practitioner
Melissa Erickson has joined
the Essentia Health St.
Joseph’s–Brainerd Clinic in
Brainerd. Erickson will be
seeing patients starting midOctober in Geriatrics and
Podiatry.
Erickson’s primary focus
will be in Geriatrics which
will be supported by her nearly 20 years of experience
working in various specialties
including long term care,
home health care and wound,
ostomy and continence
(WOC) nursing.
“I have always enjoyed
caring for patients of all ages
which is why I chose my
specialty in Family Practice,”
says Erickson. “I am their
coach helping them through a
difficult time, developing an
individualized plan of care
that is specific to their needs.”
Erickson joins Carol Ann
Williams, MD in Geriatrics
providing primary care three
days a week to patients at area
long term care facilities.
Patients receiving care
from the Podiatry team at the
Brainerd Clinic will also benefit from Erickson’s expertise
as she will be providing specialized wound and nail care
there as well.
Erickson graduated with a
Master’s Degree in Nursing
from the University of North
Dakota in Grand Forks, ND.
She is certified as a Family
Nurse Practitioner through
the American Academy of
Nurse Practitioners. She is
also a Certified Wound,
Ostomy, Continence Nurse.
“I encourage my patients
to take an active role in their
health care,” says Erickson.
“I remind them that they have
the right to ask questions
regarding their healthcare and
that I am here to help answer
them.”

Crosslake asked
to fill out survey
The City of Crosslake is
in the process of updating its
commercial ordinance and is
requesting feedback from
local citizens and business
owners. John Sumption of
Sumption Environmental has
been hired as the consultant
to lead the city through the
commercial ordinance revision process. Sumption also
was the consultant that
revised the shoreland ordinance in 2013-14.
An on-line survey has
been developed to provide an
opportunity for the public to
provide feedback to the consultant as the revision process
begins. Citizens can complete
a
survey
at

can go to city hall and fill out
a survey. The survey will
need to be completed by
October 31, 2014. City Hall
is located at 37028 County
Road 66 Crosslake, 56442 or

A meeting will also be
held on Tuesday Oct. 14 at 5
p.m. at the Crosslake
Community Center to discuss
the commercial ordinance
revision. Citizens are encouraged to learn more about the
amendment process and provide feedback. The Crosslake
Community Center is located
off County Road 66 on
Daggett Pine Road. John

Harvest Festival Saturday
at Emily Wesleyan Church
The Emily Wesleyan
Church will be hosting its
Harvest Festival on Saturday,
Oct.18 from 3 to 8 p.m.
The community is invited
and encouraged to join in this
fall celebration. There will be
fun for all ages. Activities
include hayrides, pumpkin
painting, hot chocolate/hot
cider, make-and-take crafts,
caramel apple dipping, cupcake walk, candy in a
haystack, popcorn, and more!
The pie eating contest will
be held at 4 p.m. and a chili
cook-off during the festival.

Essentia Health hosts Pink Tie
Party Oct. 30 at Arrowwood Lodge
The Fifth Annual Pink Tie
Party to support Breast
Cancer patients in the
Brainerd Lakes Area will be
on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 6
to 9 p.m. at Arrowwood
Lodge at Brainerd Lakes in
Baxter. The Pink Tie Party
will feature hors d’oeuvres,
cocktails, dessert samples,
music, silent auction and
engaging activities. Silent
auction includes a private
plane ride over the Brainerd
Lakes area, a sunset cruise on
Gull Lake, a five-day Cancun
vacation and much more!
The Pink Tie Party hosted
by Charter Media offers a
special occasion to socialize
with the members of your
community while supporting
an important cause. All proceeds benefit breast cancer
patients through the St.
Joseph’s Foundation at the
Essentia Health Cancer
Center and The Pink Ribbon
Cupboard.
Last year the Pink Tie
Party raised over $7,000 and
hopes to surpass that amount
this year. In addition to the
silent auction, a reverse raffle
is featured with a diamond
pendant necklace donated by
Riddle’s Jewelry.
The funds are used to support patients who are undergoing active treatment for
breast cancer through continued improvements in care and
non-medical assistance. The
St. Joseph’s Foundation and
Pink Ribbon Cupboard distributed to patients the following:
—Gas cards
—Wigs for breast cancer
patients
—Rent for a month to
lessen the stress on a family
—Payment of mortgage
for a month to prevent home
foreclosure
—Payment of auto insurance to keep this transportation resource available to the
family
—Payment of utilities to
keep the lights on
—Grocery gift cards for
help with family grocery
expenses
“It’s one way that as a
community, we can collaborate to extend our outreach to
improve the life of cancer survivors and their families in
the Brainerd Lakes Area,”
said Marian Foehrenbacher,
Cancer Center manager at
Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s
Medical Center. “Having
resources for helping to treat
the entire patient, not just
physically, spiritually, and
emotionally through compassionate care by Essentia
Health staff, but practically
by helping to meet the needs
patients have beyond the disease.”

men and women in the community undergoing breast cancer treatment.”

food shelf
During the month of
October, the Fifty Lakes
Municipal Bar is sponsoring
the Emily Emergency Food
Shelf in their competition
with other greater MN
Municipalities. The sponsors
who collect the most money
and donated foods will total
up what they have collected
and give all donations and
food products to the Emily
Food Shelf. Whichever
municipal collects the most
food products and monetary
donations will be presented
with a $1,000 for the food
shelf they are sponsoring.
The Emily Food Shelf
provides food to those in
need, from the Emily, Outing,
Fifty Lakes, Little Pine, Ross
Lake, Fairfield and Perry
Lake area.
Monetary or food donations may be left at the Fifty
Lakes Municipal Bar, or

who is well known in the area.

in Crosby for many years and spent
four years in the North Dakota oil
fields. The past two years he was in
construction in the Emily and Crosby
area. He presently lives eight miles
east of Emily on County Road 1.
Oktoberfest event in Emily offers largest meat
raffle, toy drive, crafts, beer garden and more!
The Log Cabin in Emily is
hosting the Eighth Annual
Oktoberfest Celebration on
Saturday, Oct. 18. Coinciding
with the event is a toy collection
for the annual Christmas party
held in December for area
youth. The public is asked to
bring a new, unwrapped toy for
a child. Cash donations will be
accepted.
Events get under way at 11
a.m. with the start of the craft
show. Vendors and crafters of
all types will offer products for
sale throughout the day. You
will find unique gift giving
items for yourself and those on
your Christmas list!
Monster Dash 5K
to be held Oct. 25
The 5th annual Crosslake
Monster Dash 5K is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25 at
the Cro
The day will get under
way at 8:30 a.m. when registration begins. At 9:30 a.m.
the children’s Spirit Sprint
will start. The Spirit Sprint is
an amazingly fun children’s
race that is designed for four
to 10 year olds. At 9:45 a.m.
the supervised children’s program opens its doors inside
the center where many fun
activities will be offered to
the children while parents
participate in the Dash.
At 10:15 a.m. the Monster
Dash will begin. The event
features both walkers and
runners and is a great way to
start your Halloween week
festivities. Registrants for the
Monster Dash will receive a
long sleeved shirt, refreshments and the chance to win
fabulous prizes from local
businesses. All proceeds from
the event will go to the Park
and Library Foundation of
Crosslake (PAL) which is a
501(c)(3) non-profit who supports parks, recreation and
library services for the greater
Crosslake area.
Prizes for best costumes
and race divisions will be
offered. Registration through
Oct. 20 is $25, starting the
Oct. 21 registration will be
$30. Registration for the children’s Spirit Sprint is $15 up
to Oct 20 and $20 after.

The children’s 15th annual Spooktacular Halloween
Party will start at noon and go
until 2 p.m.
Plan to participate in the
pizza eating contest mid afternoon.

garden are Barrett’s Back Yard
Brew, Becks, Michelob Golden
Light and Beck’s. All tips from
the beer garden are donated to

Outing
Chamber’s
Christmas fund.
A bean bag tournament will
be held in the afternoon. Signup starts at noon with the tournament starting at 1 p.m.

worth $30 each will be drawn.
The final drawing will be for a
wheelbarrow with $300 of meat.
Tickets go on sale at 4 p.m. and
the drawings begin at 6 p.m.
Virtual racing will also be held.

Crosslake holds
candidate forum
Monday, Oct. 20
The League of Women
Voters Brainerd Lakes Area
will sponsor a candidate
forum on Monday evening
Oct. 20 at the Crosslake
Community Center. The
forum will take place from 6
to 7:30 p.m.
Candidates will make
brief introductory statements
and all candidates will be
asked the same set of questions for mayor and city
council. There are three candidates for Mayor of
Crosslake and there are five
candidates for two positions
on the Crosslake City
Council.

gifts to needy families living

through 12 years of age.

Shelf and local churches.
Forms must be filled out and
signed by a parent or
guardian. The application
deadline is Nov. 20.
Toys will be distributed at
the Emily Food Shelf in
December.
