Brathwaite: Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School is an active school community with a wide variety of programs and high academic standards. The school supports students on their chosen pathways by providing a positive climate for learning based on mutual respect, hard work, perseverance, character development, and excellent academic achievement. Staff and students work together to be successful by developing and improving their learning skills, using technology to enhance their learning experience, and being engaged and attending all classes. We are pleased to announce that as of September 2013, we are a Candidate School for the International Baccalaureate program with the intention to offer the Diploma Program in September 2016 as an IB World School. We offer a pre-IB program to those students who successfully pass both stages of the application process. Harold M. Brathwaite offers two Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSMs) - one in Business and one in Justice. The Business SHSM focuses on Business Leadership and appeals to students who are thinking about starting their own business or pursuing studies in business management and other business related careers. The Justice SHSM offers a specialized program in Justice Education which focuses on the Canadian Legal System and appeals to students thinking about becoming lawyers, paralegals, police officers and a wide variety of other law-related careers. The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) at HMBSS involves students completing a package of 9 courses that meets the needs of all students with an interest in developing the skills necessary for a career in Business. The Business Industry acknowledges and supports the program through certification and appropriate industry co-operative learning placements. In order to complete an SHSM in Business, students: 1. Complete a bundle of 9 specific courses (see chart below); 2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs; 3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job shadowing, job twinning); 4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport; 5. Gain “Reach Ahead” experience connected to the student’s post secondary plans.
