Our Jay Band scored a 1 at the
This is an elimination game.
Each band gets one crack at
bringing it on. If the judges
score them high enough, they
go to the final round. They're
hoping to announce around 3:00.
Top 10 bands from both Gus and
Farris move to Finals at Gus (yes,
that's 20 bands that made UIL 1
to go to Area, including ALL 10
NISD bands!). If we don't make
the cut, we don't perform again.
Season over but great season
anyway.
Top bands start the second
round of eliminations around
5:30. Small dinner break at
8:00pm. Last band to perform at
10:45. Then judges deliberate.
Hopefully the announcements go
on around 11:30 with award
ceremony. Either way, whew!
What a long day!
This is going to be the end of a
marathon of a week for the kids.

*Mary Hull Elementary
School Parade: The Jay Band
will participate in the Mary Hull
“Red Ribbon” parade on Friday
October 31. The parade brings
out the entire community in
celebration of Red Ribbon Week.
Students proudly march and
chant "just say no" to drugs. The
parade is held in the street out
front of the school time TBD.
*NY City Band Trip: The band
travels to New York City March
10-12, 2015. Agenda includes
visits to Central Park, Rockefeller
Center, Times Square, Liberty
Island, 9/11 Memorial, a Broadway Show, Chinatown, and a Jay
Band performance at
Bowling Green. Deposit of $150 due
October 31st.
On To Area Contest! Saturday Oct 25
UIL Contest on Oct 18 so that
means we are headed to Area!
2 2 ,
They will be practicing like crazy
(including Friday Night rehearsals
since it is Senior Game on Thursday). Don't forget that band has
concessions on Friday night.
Unavoidable but it's happening
everywhere to everyone these
days. Matter of fact, regardless
of IF we advance, band needs to
send 2 adults to man concessions
on the side the bands are sitting
(visitor's side) from 5:00 - 10:30
to keep the kids fed, hydrated
and sugar buzzed up... If you
aren't roadie or chaperoning that
day, please consider sending a
quick e-mail to Doug
([email protected])
to offer to work. The band
needs your help Friday AND
Saturday to avoid fines!!! If Jay
Kat Machisen
should make final rounds, we
STILL need to work, but we'll be
able to watch the show from the
backside because concessions is
just cool that way!
*Feed the kids before they go to
the band hall
*Bring water jugs. Otherwise,
water bottles are $2 each at
concessions!!
*Sunscreen? Yes! and reapply!
*Encourage them to bring light
sweatpants/sweatshirt. It won't
seem so ridiculous after 8pm and
they are out of their bibbers!
*Bring money! Souvenirs are
expensive but they take cards.
Concession only take CASH.
Admission is $5 and it's an all day
pass
*Speaking of Souvenirs... Expect
to have to pre-pay and have
them ship unless you go EARLY.
This is the BIG one, so often the
left over t-shirt sizes run either
very big or bigger still (there are
lots of bands before us!)

Our last regular season football game
will feature Senior Recognition Night
on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014 @
Farris
Stadium,
kickoff
at 7:00
pm.
The
band
will not
perform,
instead
we will honor our 34 senior band
students and their families by recognizing them during halftime. All sen-
ior band students with their families will be lined up on the track
(facing visitors side of course!) and
their names will be announced
over the airwaves. Each senior will
be presented with a medallion and
stem flower or boutonnière. We
will take photos of each senior
with their families and also a group
photo of all the senior band students right after the presentations
are completed. Senior students
have the option of leaving the
game after halftime giving underclassmen a chance to “take over
the reigns”. Thanks so much to
Kat Machisen for organizaing the
Senior Recognition ceremonies.

Reflections of a “Retiring” Head Chaperone
Doug Rager
It started with utter fear. Okay, maybe not
that bad, but following in the footsteps of
Annette Dunaway, former head chaperone,
was no easy task. She always seemed so in
control, able to deal with emergencies, and
always so organized(not one of my strong
suits). I had chaperoned since the middle of
Sean’s freshman year, but this was different, I
was ‘in charge’. So I started at the beginning of the summer – updating the chaperone
responsibilities document, making spreadsheet
templates, and trying to learn all those names
– not just the chaperones, but all the band
students! Directors, I don’t know how you
do it.
So, it came to a couple of weeks before the
first game, and time to start asking “Who
wants to chaperone the first game?”. Hold
on, not that easy, what about those background checks? Okay, so my audience of
interested chaperones suddenly became much
smaller. Luckily, there were enough with
cleared background checks to barely staff that
first game. And tracking those cleared background checks ended up lasting well through
the season (Thanks Mr. Lozano for being
patient with me).
And finally it was here – the first trip! – to
Alamo Stadium, which I hadn’t been to in
many years, was newly remodeled, and we
had little idea of the facilities or logistics of
it. We had everything ready, water jugs
filled, first aid bags packed, students on the
buses (was that 8 or 7 buses?), and we
were on our way. I know that game was a
high scoring game, but I was so focused on
making sure students weren’t overheated,
chaperones were escorting them to restrooms, water bottles were filled, chaperones were enjoying themselves, so that
when it came to the end of the game – we
won? It was 66-45?! I noticed a couple of
touchdowns, I didn’t see that many! Okay,
time to get back on the buses, and to make
sure the students did it safely since they
parked all the way on the other side of the
parking lot. Safe and sound, there we were
back at school, and it was over. I cannot
relay how satisfying a feeling that was.
What was that flash? Oh, it was the
whole marching season going by! Extreme
heat, flooding rains, trips to Del Rio for
pizza, students needing help off the field, it
all flew by so quickly. And from that first
email each week asking for volunteers to
the end of the week packing up the chaperone backpacks after the game, I enjoyed
each week of it, and I couldn’t be prouder
to have been head chaperone of the John
Jay band this year. As we take roll for that
last return trip in the next week or two, and I
climb on the bus and give the ‘ready’ signal to
Mr. Lozano and the Bus 1 driver, I will do it
with a little sadness that it is over, but a great
deal of satisfaction and accomplishment.
I couldn’t have done it without the awesome chaperones that were there week after
week helping me out, being patient when I
messed up (who was restroom monitor this
week?), and giving me those great suggestions that are constantly improving our support of the directors and students on their
trips. To you, I owe a great deal of thanks,
both for your support of me and your friendship, as well as your unending assistance to
our directors and students.
And for those of you that are still on the
fence about being a chaperone if you are
going to be back next year? Well, you have a
few months to think about it. Sign up to be
on the Chaperone Committee in May, get
that background check done in June, be ready
for that first August game, and give it a try. I
won’t lie – there is some work involved, and
in August-September, there will be some
heat. But, at the end of that first trip, I think
you’ll really enjoy the great feeling it gives
you to contribute your time to the John Jay
Mustang Band.
John Jay Indoor Percussion Ensemble
Winter Guard & Jazz
It’s time for Indoor Percussion, Winter
Guard and Jazz Band tryouts. Each year band
students are encouraged to audition for a
spot in these elite groups to perform and
compete in contests. This is an excellent opportunity for students to play a different instrument and work together as a team.
The John Jay Indoor Percussion Ensemble
(JJIPE), are mostly percussionists but can include any fine arts student who learn to play
in a percussion ensemble (both drumline and
front ensemble) and compete indoors in the
Texas Educational Colorguard Association
(TECA) circuit in the Single A Class. Winter
guard is an indoor color guard activity per-
formed indoors with flags, rifles, and
sabres. Winter guard follows the
same contest schedule as JJIPE. For
more information on Jazz Band please
contact Mr. Yanez.
JJIPE audition music was made available to all students beginning of October. Audition dates for JJIPE Drumline are Tuesday, Nov 6 @ 4:30pm.
Front Ensemble (also called the Pit)
tryouts are Friday Nov 7 @ 4:30pm. Both in
the Band Room. If Jay makes football playoffs,
Drumline auditions will be Wednesday, Oct
29 & Front Ensemble Thursday, Oct 30. Winter guard works a little different. Rehearsals
start next week and culminate in auditions on
Nov 18 & 20. Contest Dates are:
Sat Jan 31 @ Steele HS
Sat Feb 7 @ Harlandale HS
Sat Feb 21 @ Madison HS
Sat Mar 7 @ McCollum HS
Sat Mar 21 Championships @ Wagner HS

...“I enjoy capturing action photos the most because of the
spontaneous reactions I get. It’s nice when people come up to
me and say thank you for capturing that moment. This is my
second and last year of photographing the John Jay Marching Band since my son Gabriel is a senior this year. With just a
few more games and competitions to go before this school year
is over. My hope is that the photos I've taken have brought
some happiness to not only the band kids but to family and
friends.
I want to thank Mr. Lozano, Mr. Yanez and Mr. Eckert for the
opportunity to photograph the John Jay Marching Band. I also
want to thank the parents and the kids for the privilege in allowing me to do something I enjoy so much.
Thank you all, for allowing me to capture some exciting moments of the John Jay Marching Band.”
