INTERNATIONAL CERTIFIED SPEAKER PROFILE Joseph Marfi, LEED AP BD+C is the Director of Sustainable Design & Construction for Turner Construction’s Southern California Business Unit (a division of HOCHTIEF, AG). In his role he managed administration and documentation of many projects with different LEED rating systems (NC, IC, CS, O+M, Homes) with various scopes and sizes; he is responsible for organizing LEED Charrettes and scope specific meetings. He has advised owners and developers about green strategies that provide substantial financial benefits to projects, researched new materials and technologies, and supported entrepreneurs with innovative products helping them to become suppliers to the entire green industry. Joseph is a member of Turner’s training group, developing LEED AP/GA training for 42 offices nationwide and teaching in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and Phoenix, Arizona. He has hands-on knowledge of sustainable construction management systems and techniques of the Design/Build delivery method, Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and application of BIM / VDC and Lean Construction principles with cutting edge practical solutions. As an organizer and founder of the Hungary Green Building Council, Joseph currently provides support through the International Working Group. He assisted in organizing – in collaboration with the Romania GBC and Poland GBC the “Build Green CEE” - the first Green Building Conference of all European Councils held in Budapest in 2010. Joseph has worked on a wide variety of LEED projects in different capacities, earning certification for buildings with functions ranging from offices, schools, hospitals, residential, and existing buildings in the US & internationally; contributing to certification work for over 600k m2 of construction. Joseph has been an Executive Board Member of the USGBC Orange County Chapter, currently serves on the Chapter Advisory Board, and was elected to serve on the USGBC Pacific Regional Council. He has been invited by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) to attend a Job Task Analysis Task Force conference and assisted development of test material for the LEED EBOM system. He has been a member of the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) rating system’s Materials Technical Advisory Group (TAG) and has been a member of the local Urban Land Institute Chapter’s Sustainability Committee. Joseph is a member of the Los Angeles Business Council’s Energy & Environment Committee. Prior to his current activities he held positions with design and construction companies and worked on multiple projects on three continents. Joseph earned his diploma in Hungary at the Ybl Miklos College and has deep roots to sustainability. He is an adjunct professor at the California State University; developed courses and lectured on a Green Building Certification Program at CSU Fullerton and developed and is delivering the Fundamentals of Green Buildings course at CSU Northridge. He is also a co-author of White Papers and currently working on a research study to show benefits of sustainable construction and financial benefits of successful engagement with design teams and owner/developers.
