Years ago now I went to a
race in western Ontario Clinton I think - where a
trotter we had was in an
OSS. We traveled quite a
few miles, got lost and had
a pretty frustrating trip.
Post time for the horse was
something like 1:45 and
after asking someone on a
dirt road for directions at
about 1:20, we stormed to
the track, arriving just
before the off. After sprinting to the tarmac, we
watched the trotter break
stride, never get on stride,
and finish last by about a
hundred.
Fun trip!
Yesterday I was watching
the interview with Michael
Owen on TSN (so nice to
see Woodbine in HD on the
Sports Network, BTW). He
took the red eye from
London to Toronto - in his
dashing suit - and took a
$15 or so cab ride to the
track to see his horse,
Brown Panther, contest the
Canadian International. He
had to do TV work the next

my travel story to shame.
Brown Panther was a runaway in the paddock and
on the track. After racing a
half mile or so before the
start, he dumped his rider
and was scratched.
Not only was that bad for
Owen, it was bad for
Woodbine and for the fans.
Woodbine had to refund the
wagers on him, and he was
one of the favorites; fans
got to see one less contender contest the big race.
Despite that, the race was
fair, and the handle on the
card was up from last
year’s edition.
Speaking of Michael Owen and injecting another silly
story - I bet the former
soccer star was treated well
during his brief visit to
Woodbine.

I think I side mostly on the
first of those bullets.
From the Paulick article we
see
the
dichotomous
opines on this issue. The
first comment, by Fred
Pope has some merit. Not
surprisingly, I guess, Pope
comes out for having control on sports betting and
the carve out. “Are we
going to allow our partners
to throw us under the bus?”
Irwin has a more sink or
swim opinion, “If racing
cannot compete with these
other forms of gambling,
they better find a way to do
it or perish.”
Pope once again focuses on
the slices, not the size of
the pie, stating that under
2% of gambling revenue in
the UK goes to purses (he’s
right). But the UK does
compete, like Irwin wants,
by offering a good gamble

1728. Starter’s Control. The starter shall have control over the horses from the formation of the parade until he gives
the word ‘go.’ The starter shall report to the stewards any misconduct or violation on the part of the driver and may
order any unmanageable or disabled horse declared (scratched) from the race with the concurrence of the stewards.
1729. Starting the race. The starter shall bring the horses to the starting gate as near one-quarter of a mile from

expects
Commander Crowe to have
no trouble negotiating the

“The turns are not a problem for him,” Souloy said.

Commander Crowe arrived
in central New Jersey on
Saturday, following two
days in quarantine, and will
remain there in preparation
for November’s Breeders
Crown at the Meadowlands.
Souloy hopes the extra
time will help Commander
Crowe get acclimated to
racing in North America. In
his previous trips to the
Breeders Crown, the horse
arrived just prior to the
event.
“We were disappointed, yes
and no,” Souloy said about
Commander Crowe’s previous Breeders Crown starts.
“The season was so long for
him; he started to race in
March and he went all the
season, so many transports, and I think when he
got here he was a little
down. I think in 2012 if he

Commander
Crowe,

chestnut gelding who didn’t
begin racing until late in his
3-year-old season and won
the first 23 starts of his
career, moved to Souloy’s
stable in 2010.
He is owned by the
Snogarps Gard ownership
group of Barbro Wihlborg,
Ulf Wihlborg and Joakim
Wihlborg. He is a son of
Juliano Star, out of the
Mack Lobell-sired mare
Somack.
“For me, in 2012, the horse
was fantastic,” Souloy said.
“He won everything in
Europe. In 2013, he had so
many problems, (including)
an infection in the leg. This
year, he has been really
good. It is nice to be asked
to come back here again

CAL EXPO WHIPPING RULES
1. No driver shall use unreasonable or unnecessary force in the whipping of a horse, nor whip any horse causing visible injury, nor whip any horse about the head
including but not limited to trailing horses, nor whip any horse after the finish line has been crossed except when it has been deemed by the Board of Stewards necessary to control the horse. The Board of Stewards will notify the State Vet to conduct any post race examination on any horse deemed to have been subject to unreasonable or unnecessary force.
2. Drivers must keep one line, rein, or handhold in each hand at all times during the race except when the horse and driver reach the 7/8 pole marker during the race.
3. Drivers must have complete control of their horse at all times on the racetrack.
4. The following actions shall be considered indiscriminate, unreasonable, and/or unnecessary uses of the whip:
A. Any blatant or exaggerated movements of the whipping arm which will result from raising the elbow above the driver’s shoulder height and/or allowing the hand holding the whip to reach behind the driver during the use of the whip.
B. The use of the whip other than the area inside and above the level of the shafts of the sulky and between the sulky shafts.
C. Whipping under the arch or shafts of the sulky or use of the whip as a goading or poking device or placing the whip between the legs of the horse.
D. Using the whip when it does not appear that the horse is advancing its position in the race and appears exhausted and/or not in contention.
