The instructor will open each day with a lecture and demonstration after which students will paint and receive individual critiques of their work. The class will focus on learning to see like an artist, emphasizing he fundamental principals necessary to quickly and accurately capture the beauty of nature when painting outdoors. Among topics covered will be: values, hue, saturation, drawing, edges, design, and paint application. We will also discuss artistic style, look at the work of a variety of different artists, and consider the importance of painting from life as a means to developing one’s own individual voice. We seem to have strayed away from this original philosophy. The Gallery Committee wants to know what you would like to see in the Spotlight Room and how we should use this space. When you’re in the Gallery, let Michael Gallagher, our Gallery Manager know your ideas, talk to an Executive Board member, or a Gallery Committee member. Let us know your thoughts. If you want, just email me your thoughts at [email protected] The Guild and Gallery is for the betterment of its members. We might not be able to hit the mark 100% of the time, but we will try. Thanks, Vivian Farmer, President Welcome New Members!!! Beverly Chesterby - 3D multi-media, Dewey Gail Cutright - acrylic, Prescott Bob & Frankie Feirn - wood, stone, scrimshaw, pen & ink, Prescott Valley Lori Higgins - painting & sculpture, Prescott Diane Olsen - oil & acrylic, Prescott Marty Orosz - contemporary silver jewelry, Prescott September 2014 Gallery BOD Mtg: • Spotlight Room Wall Repair – the walls are in bad need of repair or replacement due to the “spongy” condition after numerous show hangings. Bob also suggested that during the Christmas holidays [Dec 25-Jan 4] he and Michael G. could do the work themselves as they have the expertise to do the work. The Board deferred to Bob to take care of the repairs. • Leather Show – Bob stated the leather trade show schedule is Friday-Sunday, February 27th – March 1st. Discussion of specifics followed: (a) would the Gallery show need to be taken down early to accommodate the trade show as this would upset the membership like last year? Barbara C. later suggested the Gallery Show could be combined with the leather show and solve that problem (b) more leather works displayed should be “for sale” items (c) the leather show representatives should be responsible for marketing to the public that MAG is the host (c) perhaps the two meeting rooms could be used for the leather show (d) we need a specific contract with the leather show producers. DECISION: the Board did not approve the leather show as yet until we view a needed contract. It was decided Bob will bring specifics about these topics to the November Board meeting. September 2014 Guild BOD Mtg: • Special Presentation: Bridgette Flagherty and John McLoughlin from Cellar 433 addressed the Board. This is the winery group that organized the wine garden at the May Courthouse Show this year. They are concerned about distributors and outsiders (other than AZ wine growers) entering the summer festivals as they believe it’s important to promote our own AZ growers. They also spoke of sales and fundraising ideas. It was stated Cellar 433 successfully brought eight wineries to our last show. They want to know ASAP if we will contract with them again for 2015 as their show schedule fills quickly. The Board did agree that we will contract with Cellar 433 for our next show. • Projector/Bulbs – there had been an offer to MAG for a used projector. Bob stated that this item has been SOLD and not available any longer. Gail Holl is looking for one for demos, etc. Stuart B. suggested we rent the item and Bob said we could find a rental at a reasonable price. • Hand Held Wireless Mic – Cost is $320 from CAM Electronics but we agreed this is too expensive and we will keep looking for one. Pam D. pointed out that hand-held mics are basically obsolete as people like their hands free during presentations. • Update: Membership Lists – Bob discussed the following: (a) computer problem -ACCESS is not working (b) Our IT person is working on the infrastructure and some of it is working now, but some data was lost (c) we WILL have a current membership list in time for election night on October 24th (d) office computers are not compatible with each other, but we are working on it. (e) Cathy G. discussed benefits of placing members’ names ONLY on our website. It can then be, upon request to Cathy, “linked” to the members own website. • Holiday Closures: the Guild and the Gallery will be closed for Christmas from December 25 – January 4. Intake for the first show of 2015 will be Monday, January 5th. • Update: October elections – Barbara gave a review of the procedures for processing ballots on election night. We have chosen the three counters: Bob Deputy, Leon Jones, and Deanne Brewster. We may also need an extra person as we expect a large volume of ballots and this year with so many candidates, it will be complicated. Barbara, as the Secretary, per our By-laws will remain as the “overseer” of the ballot results. • Christmas Bazaar – The Bazaar is scheduled for December 6-7 and we will need staffing. Mary S. will organize this event. • Studio Tour Results – Bob reported that the Gallery did “OK” with the Studio Tour showing some nice sales. Mountain Artists Guild • 228 N.
