NUTS & BOLTS Santa Cruz Valley Car Nuts, Inc. October 2014 FROM THE EDITOR Next month most of our winter visitors will be returning and we should step up our activities. The summer has been fairly slow for the newsletter. We are planning a welcome back picnic in November, the White Elephant Parade the end of October and the Christmas party at Tanque Verde Guest Ranch in December. I hope we have big crowds for all of these events. We need lots of participation to keep the club and newsletter going. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for January 30-31, 2015 for the 21st Annual Tubac Car Show. If you are staying at the Resort, make your reservations before they fill up. I mailed out 724 registrations and the car nuts will receive theirs in the next month. We already have over 100 entries in just one month. Cruise to Tumacacori Mission National Historic Park On a beautiful Tuesday morning a group of about 30 plus carnuts met at Merle’s to caravan to the Tumacacori Mission for a personal guided tour of the mission. Del Hammond and Rudy Molina organized this great trip. We took the east frontage road as far as we could before getting onto I-19 for about a mile and then back on the frontage road the rest of the way. After visiting the mission, the orchard and the museum everyone got back in their cars for the short trip to Wisdoms for Mexican food and marguaritas. Wayne & I like to attend each year in support of Willcox’s chapter of the AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization). It is a good cause and the organizers are always grateful for our attendance and provide great hospitality. The show is held on the first Saturday in October and coincides with the town of Willcox’s annual Rex Allen Day’s celebration. It is held in Keiller Park just off I 10. The field is adjacent to the fair and carnival, so there is plenty to see, do and eat. This year’s organizer, Sherry Lynn Van Allen, not only organized the event, but provided the musical entertainment. Her husband, Jessie, and kids were all hustling around the field helping too. She did a fine job. They held a 50/50 raffle, a raffle for a carved portrait of John Wayne, and local businesses provided door prizes for participants. Wayne won a lavender colored tool set, made by Stanley tools, which he so kindly gave to me. What a guy! The show was open to all makes and models of cars. There were approximately 30 cars there consisting mostly of folks from Willcox and the surrounding area. We took Wayne’s Mercedes and met club members Joe Pierce and Karen Rogers there. This was Joe’s 74 Corvette’s first show since he and Wayne finished the restoration. I’ll be darned if he didn’t win first place. Joe and Karen had left by trophy time, so Wayne accepted for them. If you have never attended a Willcox car show, I highly recommend them. They hold two per year and they both benefit the AYSO. The other show is Memorial Day weekend and held downtown in front of the Rex Allen Museum. Dianne Sevick & Wayne Potter Lila Szedlus, Director Student Coordinator 1001 W. After arriving in town, a chase down of the mini-Batmobile on main street, three yards sales, two old cameras and an S&H green Stamp book taking away my spending money, and a circle as many blocks as possible looking for old tin, we finally arrived at the show. What a pleasant surprise. There were quite a number of cars, some from distant places like Tucson, and Safford, and most importantly from Green Valley was Wayne Potter and his trophy collector Camaro to represent the Car Nuts while relaxing along the grass and walkway, holding court with the admiring crowd, and sharing memories with the fans, and the I used to have one folks. All and all it was a good time, and a nice, well organized first time show. Hopefully more folks will bring their cars to next year’s event. It was very family friendly. And the park has some nice picnic areas to enjoy a good basket brunch while the cars show off. It’s always a good day when you can be Nuts about cars.
