2013
“Voters in Maricopa County were generous with their tax dollars this year,
approving nearly three-quarters of all ballot measures supporting schools. Final
results from the Nov. 5 election show voters approved 27 of 37 school bond or
override requests from 31 districts. Ten measures failed.
Background: Arizona school districts called for bond and override elections before
the recession. But when the economy tanked, school budgets were hit hard, making
bond and override dollars that much more important.
The state Legislature slashed about $671 million between 2008 and 2013 from
school operations and about $279 million in school-facilities funding, according to
the Joint Legislative Budget Committee. In some cases, the reductions have
increased class sizes and have caused employee layoffs and program cuts.
This year was the first time since the recession that schools saw an increase in
operating money from the state, about $82 million.” (Melissa Leu, AZ Central, 14 Oct
2013.)
