Letter From the President
I am pleased to announce that we have a newsletter
again. Thank you Daphne for taking on this big project!
I am honored to once again serve as the President of
LAFSC – thank you for voting me into this position. Big kudos go out to Bob Davis, who has done a great job over the
last few years as President, as well as to everyone who has
served on our Board of Directors.
This has been a great year so far. Not only have we run
several successful annual competitions, including Adult Mid
Winter Warmup, California Championships, Showcase for
Skaters, and LA Open, but we also hosted the largest National Showcase in its history. The skating was terrific, and we
were honored to host such a great event – especially to
commemorate its tenth year. Thank you to Jan SooHoo and
Michael Cruz for doing such a great job co-chairing the competition. We also recently held our annual Southwest Pacific
critique, which was a success.
Thank you to all of the officials who made it happen
along with Bob and Joanne Davis and Vicki Busch who organized the event.
Our Club is special – not only because of its tremendous history and great competitors, but because of all of our
members – skaters, parents, coaches, and officials. Our members are the first people to volunteer when help is needed in
the skating world. We are charitable. We are supportive. We
are inclusive. These are just some of the attributes that make
our Club stand
out, and make me proud to still be an active member twenty
years after I last competed as a skater. Thank you to all of our
members for maintaining the unrequited love for skating and
supportiveness that makes our Club what it is, and thank you
for allowing me to share in your accomplishments.
Good luck to all of our skaters competing at this year’s
Southwest Pacific Regionals – I look forward to a great season.
- Dawn Eyerly

Letter from the Junior Board President
Inspired by love for Figure Skating and The Los Angeles Figure Skating Club, LAFSC is built upon hardworking and dedicated skaters. As the president, I am willing to devote time and
effort volunteering at various club organized skating events including: ice shows, competitions, and fundraisers. Members develop a stronger connection to their figure skating community
through volunteer work, as well as a sense of selflessness, responsibility, time management, and communication skills.
I care deeply about LAFSC and the community outside of
the figure skating world. My hope is to give back through canned
food drives, donations to local charities, or any work of social
service that can be beneficial to the community. I want to make
the LAFSC Junior Board into role models who work their hardest to guide and inspire younger generations through their positive actions.
- Shayanne Casapao
Letter from the Editor
I have been on the Junior Board for three years, each year
occupying the same position of Media/Photographer. I enjoyed
taking photos for LAFSC events, and wanted to bring back the
newsletter in order to share them with our members who may
not have had the chance to attend.
That being said, I encourage anyone and everyone to send
in photographs, articles, news - really any content at all. While I
try to take photos when I can of as many events as possible, I do
have a packed schedule, balancing school and skating. So please,
for the next issue send in anything you’ve got, and it doesn’t have
to be just pictures. Want to write an article? Give it a shot alhough all articles are subject to editing for spelling and grammar.
Thanks,
Daphne Bogosian

LAFSC Class of 2014
Catherine Giese
School and skating have always intermingled to create my
life. I was never able to have one without the other because they each fed off of each other and helped me to
stay focused. I competed throughout my elementary, middle, and high school careers, finally deciding to close that
chapter of my life after the 2014 Southwest Pacific Regional Championships. After the final standings came out
for my event, I went home, plugged my results into my
Common Application, and pressed the button to send my
request to be admitted into my dream school. In December, I was putting on my skates when I found out that I had been accepted to
Cornell University.
I am now sitting in my dorm on my twin extra-long bed all the way across the
country as I write this article. College is a huge adjustment, but the rink is a mere
fifteen-minute walk away for whenever I need to de-stress. I am currently majoring in biological sciences, but have been becoming increasingly interested in psychology and how biological principles relate to and help determine the human
experience. Apart from the skating club, I have joined other student clubs relating
to natural resource conservation and sustainability, mental and women’s health
advocacy, health careers, and environmental community service. I’ve met and befriended some amazing and diversely talented people from at least seven different countries and twenty different states. College so far has been a wonderful
experience. My life only continues to open up with skating helping me to adjust
and expand my frontiers along the way.
Brenda Ji
Hi! My name is Brenda Ji and I graduated from La
Canada High School back in June. I've just been
shipped off to Boston and am now attending Wellesley College! The weather here is really something.
Although I'm still undecided about my major I'm
hoping that I will be able to explore and find out
what I'm really passionate about during my four
years here. The sciences have always been in interesting to me but I'm keeping an open mind! I'm so excited to begin my
career here at Wellesley, but I'm definitely going to keep skating in my
schedule.

I just finished up my third week of
classes at Duke University, and I already feel so lucky to attend such an
amazing school that offers endless
opportunities both inside and outside
of the classroom. Leaving my family,
friends, and the perfect weather back in Southern California and moving to humid Durham, North Carolina where I knew absolutely no one
was definitely an adjustment, but I can tell it will be no time before I
start calling Duke home. As for skating, I’m on Duke’s club figure skating team which is made up of all levels of skaters ranging from beginners to senior level freestyle competitors. We practice a few days during the week at a nearby ice rink, and I can’t wait to start competing at
intercollegiate competitions at MIT, Liberty University, and the University of Delaware during Spring Semester!
Spencer Howe
Hello, My name is Spencer Howe and I am a competitive figure skater. I am competing at junior level
and have hopes in competing in this years 2015 U.S
National Championships in Greensboro, North
Carolina! I have also just graduated from high school
and am in the process of making college plans so
that I can still focus on my skating. I would really like
to attend UCLA because my Mom went there in
her youth, not to mention it's a great school with
some amazing courses. I'm not sure what I will study while I'm in college, but I'm highly considering the field of kinesthetic study. I would
like to major in a sports/health related field so I can help other skaters
and athletes. I plan on eventually becoming a figure skating coach as
well as a teacher in the expressive art of Kuk Sul Hopkido (Form of
Martial Arts). At the end of the day I'm not sure where this life will
take me or what college I'll end up attending, but I'm happy and grateful to be able to follow my dreams in becoming a great figure skater,
for it is one of my biggest passions.
