Term 4 Issue 2 24 October 2014 Sports Person of the Year 2014 It was a pleasure to attend the Foundation for Youth Development 2014 Excellence Awards at Government House on Wednesday. Well over 250 dignitaries attended and the Governor General, Sir Jerry Mateparae presented awards to a number of young people who have turned their lives around. Our very own Tanaea Heremaia won a Project K Excellence Award and then spoke to the audience on behalf of the other recipients. What a daunting prospect! She was inspiring, and spoke with great honesty, humility and dignity outlining how she had changed, how her self esteem had improved and the role Project K played in her journey. She received a massive ovation, a very emotional moment for her mother, Ms Tohia and Whaea Donna. Sports Prizegiving This was an excellent celebration of our students’ sporting successes. Our guest speaker, Adrian Leat, was Deputy Head boy in 2005, and has gone on to gain a Masters Degree in Architecture, and now works for Wingate & Farquhar. He is an outstanding Judoka, winning national and international championships and then a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He spoke about what it takes to be an international athlete - the focus, the determination, the travel and the long hours of practice - 3 times a day, 6 days a week. He spoke about the loss of his brother, Alistair, and the impact it has had on him and as a result he touched all of our hearts. Tyler Ingram, pr esented awar ds. He was Head boy 2013, Captain of our 1stXV and a Harbour Rep every year of his school life, and is presently studying at AUT. Tuesday 28 October is Day 6 Congratulations to Megan Kikuchi, who was deservedly awarded ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ at our Sports Awards last night. Reminder - school is closed on Monday 27th October for Labour Day. We re-open on Tuesday 28th October, and it will be Day 6 J O Mathewson, Principal CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GATEWAY STUDENTS! Gateway students celebrated the culmination of the Gateway programme for 2014 at a North Shore awards evening held at the Spencer on Byron Hotel on Tuesday evening. It was an opportunity to thank our employers for their significant role in guiding and mentoring our students and for parents and others to congratulate students on their achievements. On behalf of all the Gateway students on the North Shore, our Head Girl, Nicole Barratt, spoke eloquently about her rewarding experiences with local employer James Russ and ex-BC student Anna Horley at Epsilon Lighting. Two other employers also spoke enthusiastically about the benefits of taking on Gateway students. Please contact Mrs Jenkin at the school if you would like to find out more about the programme. We are currently recruiting new Gateway students for 2015. Bring Your Own Device Next year we would like to encourage students to BYOD Given that the entire school is on wireless and Christmas is often a time when grandparents ask what you would like, we thought we would advertise in good time. The advantages of bringing your own device: you can connect, save, shar e and r etr ieve your wor k anytime, anywhere. You can be organized, motivated and…successful. So what should you be buying? Think in ter ms of what you will need to do with your device: 1 – Take notes or wr ite an essay (pr efer ably be able to par agr aph, emphasize and style your wor k) 2 – email and share with other s 3 – Connect to the inter net and r esear ch 4 – Listen (to movies/songs/sounds/speeches/language). 5 – Record photos or videos You need something with Windows 8, or an iPad (or iPad mini), or equivalent. If you “buy cheap”, you will probably run into problems. Please see Miss Fuller with any questions.
