Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
"The whole law and the prophets depend on these two
commandments." The law of love. That's what Jesus came to
establish. In a religious milieu that was often marked by legalism
and scrupulosity, Jesus brought a kind of freedom. He reminded us
that the laws of religion are made to serve the ultimate goal of love:
love for God and love for neighbor.
Think about the Ten Commandments. This classical summary of
God's rules for us can be divided into two types of laws. First come
the laws about loving God: have no strange gods; don't take the
Lord's name in vain; honor the Sabbath. Then come the laws about
loving our neighbor: honor your parents; don't kill; don't commit
adultery; don't steal; be honest; and don't covet your neighbor's
spouse or property. When we follow the law of love that Jesus
preaches today, all of this is taken care of.
If we loved God with our whole heart, mind, and soul, for example,
there would be no room left for false gods. There would be no
bitterness or apathy leading us to disrespect God's name or to fail to
worship him as he has asked. Similarly, if we loved our neighbors as
ourselves by following the Golden Rule, then we would naturally
respect them instead of lying, killing, coveting, or the like.
Ultimately, all the dos and don'ts of the law are just specific
guidelines describing what love looks like. This is very helpful for
those times when love doesn't come so easily to us. When we
struggle with having our heart in the right place, the Ten
Commandments give us direction. But as Jesus instructs us today,
the goal is to grow in the kind of love that naturally leads us to want
to do what's best.

REMEMBER WHEN
Thus says the Lord:
“You shall not molest or oppress an alien,
for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of
Egypt.” (Ex 22:20)
One thing, I believe, is for certain. We all know what it feels
like to be the underdog. We have all been in positions
where we did not have a lot of power, where we had little
influence, where what we said or felt or believed did not
really matter to others.
Being underdogs, you would think, would put us more in
touch with others who are downtrodden.
Sadly, the reverse is often true.
When an underdog finally gets to have some kind of power
and/or control, that person often does not care about others
who are experiencing the same things. The only person
that former underdog cares about is himself. That person
will do everything that he can to make sure he never
experiences powerlessness again -- even if it means
making other people powerless.
The people of the Old Testament heard a strong message
from Moses reminding them that they were an oppressed
people once upon a time. Being an oppressed people, they
were called to look out for the rights of others so that they
would not oppress anyone the way that they had been
oppressed through the years.
That is a hard message to hear.
Our natural inclination is to protect ourselves and make sure
that we never suffer no matter the cost to another.
That is the way of the world in which we live.
However, we are not a part of this world. We are a people
who are longing for God's world. We are pilgrims in this
world but we must make a mark in the world that helps
people to be better.
We are called to holiness, to faithfulness, to trust.
FAITH ACTION: Do all that you can to set an example
today that inspires other people to want to help others rather
than to use others.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Feast of All Saints falls on Saturday and, thus, loses
its obligatory status. Therefore, this year, the Feast of All
Saints is not a Holy Day of Obligation. The only Mass
celebrated on that day will be the 8:30 a.m.
Mass. There will be no vigil Mass the evening
before.
COMING NEXT WEEKEND
Blest Art will be visiting our parish this coming Saturday
and Sunday, November 1st/2nd, on behalf of the Palestinian
family carvers in the Bethlehem district. The mission of
Blest Art is to support those families in the Holy Land.
For centuries, the Christians of Bethlehem district have
earned a living by carving olive wood religious art to sell it to
visiting pilgrims. Fewer pilgrims are journeying to the Holy
Land today, making it difficult for Christian artisans to
support their families by the dignified work of their hands in
the land of Christ’s birth. Because of the lack of work, there
has been a dramatic rise in Christian emigration from the
Holy Land. Christians are now less than 1% of the
population in the Holy Land.
Blest Art has helped hundreds of struggling families by
working to make it possible for Christians in the Holy Land to
maintain both their livelihood and their ancestral homes in
the land of our Lord.
When Blest Art visits our parish they will have handcarved Nativity sets, statues of many sizes, last suppers,
crosses, rosaries, and many other pieces of beautiful olive
wood religious art. By purchasing a piece of art from the
Holy Land, you will support your brothers and sisters who
choose to stay and protect the holy sites where Jesus
himself lived. Your purchase will make a difference in the
lives of many Christian families.
They gladly accept cash, checks, and all major credit
cards. Please note that they do not ask for, nor do they
accept, any donations. Thank you in advance for your
purchase when they come to visit.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
A lady lost her purse in the mall. It was found by an
honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse,
she commented, “That’s funny. When I lost my bag there
was a $10 bill in it. Now there are ten $1 bills."
The boy quickly replied, “That’s right, ma’am. The last
time I found a lady’s purse, she didn’t have any change for a
reward.”
PLEASE REMEMBER THEM
Please pray for the priests and deacons who
have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully
and whose anniversaries of death are this
week:

Respect Life Corner
Forty Days for Life
The successful Forty Days for Life, the pro-life response to the
legalization of abortion, has begun and will
continue until Sunday, November 2nd.
Participation includes praying in front of the
Planned Parenthood facility in Merrillville
at a time that is convenient for you, and
most importantly, fasting and praying
especially against abortion every day of the
Forty Days.
You Did It For Me
Some 90,000 Central American children could make the perilous
journey to the United States this year, creating a humanitarian
crisis. Extreme violence, grinding poverty, and a desire to reunite
with family drive them north. Catholic Relief Services provides
education, leadership, and skill training programs to help these
children stay and flourish in their hometowns. We must help
children arriving at our border, but also help them where they are.

This will make our day a special one, but wait…there is more to

transportation, theatre ticket, dinner and all gratuities.
Reservations are being taken at this time in the
