OCTOBER 2014 4625 Brandingshire Pl., Fort Worth, TX 76133 Mike Poole takes Supercon 2014 Best of Show Award with 1961 Sharknose Ferrari The IPMS Fort Worth Scale Modelers added another successful Supercon for the books on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014. For a complete listing of the Supercon 2014 category winners, see the home page of our club website at: According to our Secretary-Treasurer Don Martin, and our statistician Mike McIlraith, 2014 was a banner year for Supercon. According to our numbers guys, we recorded the most entries this year since 2002. We had 300 models on the tables, up 37 from last year, an increase of 14%. http://www.fortworthscalemodelers.org/ In the major divisions, we saw dramatic increases in Aircraft, Armor and Diorama categories, and slight decreases in Automotive and Figures. And happily, we saw a larger turnout in Children’s categories this year. We had a good number of walk-ins this year, and according to our vendor coordinator Bob Ferrara, we sold out our vendor tables, yet there was plenty of breathing room in the hallway and aisles. With the gate receipts and entry fees tallied, we again came out ahead financially. As usual, there were a few category reassignments during the morning, and a few category splits instituted on the fly, but thanks to a great judging crew, and support team, we ended the day about 30 minutes before the 5 p.m. deadline. The event transpired pretty smoothly, and we even got a few compliments from some of our out-of-town fans. We also added a new Special Award this year, commemorating the loss of one of our esteemed club members. The Jim Belden Memorial Award honored the Best Auto. As always, thanks to the folks who helped us log in the 300 entries, the judges who contributed their time and expertise to help us maintain our reputation as a fair and fun venue, and to our loyal vendors and fans for helping make Supercon 2014 a success. Our Supercon 2014 theme, “49 Shades of Gray” left the field wide open for candidates this year. As gray is such a ubiquitous color in military scale modeling, the prospects ran the gamut. Topping the list this year was the superb Type 22 Submarine by Edmond Goh. One of our regular participants, Lynn Rowley, took home a handful of awards this year. Lynn is renowned for his dramatic dioramas which always tell a great story and sometimes seem to defy the laws of gravity. He has more than once taken home top honors in Supercon. This year, Lynn didn’t disappoint. His aircraft diorama “Pardo’s Push,” won special awards for Most Popular, President’s Award, and the Charlie Jay Award for best Vietnam-era Subject. Garnering the greatest number of participants’ votes and the club president and judges’ respect was the suspended F-4 Phantom diorama which related a moment in time from the Vietnam War. While many of our readers may already be familiar with the events surrounding “Pardo’s Push,” you may access the Wikipedia article on the Internet to learn more about this incredible story. Lynn Rowley earned three Special Awards for “Pardo’s Push,” a Vietnam-era diorama with two suspended F-4 Phantoms. See detail pics below. Another Supercon veteran, Rick Cotton, received a top award in honor of the Greatest Generation – Best World War II Subject. Rick, another past Supercon Best of Show recipient, received kudos for his Imperial Japanese Navy Zuikaku carrier. Beautiful. Another regular contributor to Supercon, and frequent winner, Lonnie McIntosh won the award for Best Armor. Among so many exquisite armor pieces this year, his 1/35-scale U.S. Jeep was a standout. Congratulations, Lonnie. This is his second consecutive Best Armor win. Lonnie took 2013 honors for his British Jackal. Finally, congratulations to Mark Howard, club member and master modeler, on his special award win as Best Luftwaffe entry for his stunning 1/32-scale Ta-152C-0. NOTES FROM SUPERCON: President Glenn Whitmire and the club offer our sincere thanks to everyone who pitched in to make Supercon 2014 a success. Bob Ferrara took the reins this year to provide for vendor coordination, and we are extremely grateful for his efforts. The revenue generated from our vendors is always an important factor in our financial success. Thanks also to Don Martin and Mike McIlraith for their assistance in taking registration fees and gate receipts and tallying judging sheets. Finally, thanks to all the judges who volunteered their time and expertise for the very demanding task of recognizing the winners from among so many deserving entries. While we always routinely offer our thanks for a job well done to our judges for their selfless contributions, we never take for granted the important job they undertake each year. As the level of workmanship seems to increase each year, our volunteers meet the task of judging these masterpieces with the usual attention to detail and high degree of professionalism. They are probably the greatest contributor to our club’s ongoing reputation as a great annual contest. Rick Cotton entered this armed-up Skyraider in the markings of VA-176 aboard the USS Intrepid. Edmond Goh won a gold medal with this stunning Walker Bulldog. Edmond Goh placed with his beautifully weathered PzKpfw I Ausf.F. Mark Mills took first place in Armor Conversions with his Churchill Mk. III AVRE. TEAMWORK!!! Thanks to all those who contributed to Supercon 2014! If you wish to participate, please bring along a wrapped gift WITHOUT a nametag. We will draw lots and begin the exchange. For those unfamiliar with how the exchange works, here’s a brief rundown: when his or her number is called, each member can draw a gift off the table, or raid the gift previously selected by another club member. Round and round it goes, until the last gift is taken from the table. We’ll review the rules before getting into the action to avoid spending the entire night swapping the same goodies over and over again.
