Participants will join Dr. Bipan Chand and his team live from the
operating room in performing a cutting edge procedure!
This activity will educate physicians and healthcare professionals on the
connection between obesity in children and adults. It will educate participants
on the health consequences and diseases associated with obesity in all
age groups and provide strategies and mechanisms to assist physicians in
the care of their obese patients.
curricular goals and objectives
Framing the problem: Obesity scope and implications on public health
Upon completion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
• State the prevalence of obesity in adolescent and adult populations
within the United States;
• Cite state specific data regarding the prevalence of obesity; and
• List the medical consequences of obesity and healthy benefits of
weight loss.
Provide strategies for effective counseling of the obese patient
Upon completion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
• Identify obese patients and risks associated with the disease;
• Assess for readiness for change among obese patients; and
• Formulate specific weight loss behavior recommendations and
arrange for appropriate referral to bariatric program.
Discuss system-based resources for weight management
Upon completion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
• Direct appropriate patients to allied health specialist/bariatric program
for obesity treatment;
• Recognize criteria for bariatric surgery and expected weight loss
outcomes; and
• Recognize the measures used for successful treatment of each
modality, medical and surgical.
