About the college
Loyola College, Chennai is a Jesuit institution
founded in the year 1925. It became autonomous in
1978 and is affiliated to the University of Madras.
The college aims at training young men and women
of quality to be leaders in all walks of life and to serve
the fellowmen in justice, truth and love. True to its
motto Let your light shine the college has earned
a name for itself in the service of education and
has been consistently rated year after year by India
Today as one of the Top 10 colleges in arts, science
and humanities. The college has been conferred
with the rare distinction of College of Excellence by
the UGC this year.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The department of Botany is one of the oldest
departments in the college having commenced in
the year 1950. The department which has completed
64 years of dedicated service has rendered stalwarts
who have made a mark in this field over the years. The
department was rechristened as the Department of
Plant Biology and Biotechnology in the year 2000
and has moved on from strength to strength all
these years. The department was permitted to start
the M. Sc. Biotechnology course in the year 1999.
The department also offers research programmes
namely M.Phil and Ph.D. A number of conferences,
workshops, seminars have been organized regularly
by the department.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Nanotechnology is a burgeoning area in all
branches of sciences and engineering. The effects
of this technology is being felt far and wide and will
be more so in the coming years. The relevance of
this field in plant science is both old and advanced.
The biosynthesis of nanoparticles using biological
systems namely bacteria, actinomycetes, algae,
fungi and plants is a hot area and also has immense
social, medical and environmental applications.
Plant-derived drugs have served as the base for an
enormous fraction of the current pharmacopoeia.
However, plant-based therapeutic molecules as
drugs have limitations due to reduced solubility,
permeability and bioavailability. One case in point
is where nanotechnology has a massive impact
on therapeutic drugs whereby it improves the
performance of drugs in terms of efficacy and
safety. This application being a drop in the ocean in
terms of the technology at large, a need to explore
the immediate and relevant applications of it seems
to be the need of the hour. The aim of the workshop
is to provide a learning ground and at the same time
offer a platform for the fruitful exchange of ideas
between experts and participants.The lectures in
the workshop are by eminent personalities having
great expertise in the area. The practical sessions
are structured with the target group in mind and
to enable the integration of the concepts learnt as
a component in their curriculum or research work.

TARGET GROUP
The workshop is exclusively for faculty and research
scholars of all science disciplines and will be on firstcome basis. Maximum number of participants is 25.
MODE OF REGISTRATION
A registration fee of Rs. 1000/- should be made in
the form of DD, in favor of The Principal, Loyola
College, payable at Chennai. The DD along with the
registration form should be sent to the Convener,
NTPS - 2014 on or before 31 October 2014.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation can be arranged on prior request
at additional cost. A request for the same can be
sent along with the registration form.
