Principal’s Report:
MAD Day: The sun was shining and by 7.30 am our school grounds were buzzing
with parents and students setting up exciting activities to celebrate Mini Activities
Day. This day is a part of the year 5/6 program that supports their Maths and curriculum program. It involves the whole school and the money raised goes towards
a project selected by the Junior School Council. Congratulations to our students on
the work they all did to make it one of the most memorable days of the year for the
whole school.
Community sport for year 5/6: We must always put the safety of students first and we apologise that we
have had to defer the program. We have put measures in place to ensure that planning for any program is
done in a timelier manner to allow School Council to consider and approve activities. On this occasion
insufficient time was available to get the required information regarding higher risk activities to School
Council members.
School Year 3/4 Camps: Last week all of our year ¾ classes attended a two day camp at Camp Wyuna in
Queenscliff. I visited a couple of the groups and the students were all extremely happy after an exciting day
riding bikes to the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, walking to Fort Queenscliff and going out in a boat to see the
dolphins. My highlight was a visit with the “Seal Group” to the Marine Discovery Centre where we learnt that
without phytoplankton in our oceans we would not have enough oxygen in the world to survive. Our teachers
and volunteer parents do a wonderful job in providing these experiences and then sleeping over on camp. I

The Education Maintenance Allowance
ceases at the end of 2014 and will not be
available to students or families in 2015.
In the 2013 School Reform agreement
signed with the Commonwealth, the Victorian
Government committed to change the way it
helps low income families with education
expenses. The EMA program will cease at
the end of 2014.
From 2015 funds previously used for the
EMA will be distributed directly to meanstested schools across the state using a
formula based on the needs of the student
population.
Prep – Year 2 Athletics Day
Friday 7th November, 2014
Dear Parent/Carer,
Torquay College will be holding its Prep – Year 2 Athletics Day between 8.45 am and 12.30
pm on the oval, sports field and netball courts near the stadium on Friday 7th November.
The theme of the day is fun and participation.
Children will be competing in year groups, eg Prep girls, Year 1 boys.
The format of the morning has had some slight alterations and the children should enjoy the
new activities that make use of the College’s facilities.
Children are practising the events, each Friday. Please make sure they are dressed appropriately for sprinting, long
jumping, hurdling, throwing an object and completing an obstacle course.
No matter the child’s ability, points will be gained for their House
BANCOORA – RED, CHARLEMONT – GOLD, INVERLOCHIE – BLUE and SCAMMELL – GREEN
Over the next few weeks children will be reminded of their HOUSE and colour and they are asked to wear clothing matching that of their HOUSE colour, if possible, on the day.
CHILDREN SHOULD BRING ALONG A SAFETY PIN TO ATTACH THE RECORD CARD TO THEIR CLOTHING.
Suitable clothing and footwear for the day is required and it’s most important that sun protection is worn,
regardless of the forecast. Cool drinks are also a good idea on the day.
Your whole family is invited to attend this event and acknowledge the efforts of the children. Many families choose to
have a morning tea picnic, on the grass, during recess. Tea, coffee and snacks will be available on the day.
The Canteen will be open at recess and lunch times.
Thanking you,
Geoff Cameron, Ellie McFarlane & P-2 Aths Co-ordinators.
Seal the Loop Action Day
Friday 7th November
Zoos Victoria’s Seal the Loop Action Day is an annual beach clean up and education day
held at various sites across Victoria. The event provides the opportunity for schools and
community groups across Victoria join forces to fight against ocean debris and its harmful
effect on wildlife.
Students in year 3-6 will be participating in various activities including beach cleanup and will
travel to and from the event by bus. There is no cost to attend this local excursion.
Students will need to bring lunch, drink bottle, hat and sunscreen on the day.
*Parent helpers are required, if you can help please contact classroom teacher.
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Update
Many thanks to Linton at Camperdown Compost Company for
the donation of two trailer loads of compost – for more info on
their great green waste recycling program –
http://www.campcompco.com.au/
Keep your eye out for plants for sale – you can come and ask us
at the kitchen between 8am and 1pm Tuesday and Thursdays,
all day Friday, or grab some yuccas or veggie seedlings from
reception – don’t forget to leave your $ in the container!
This week we’ve got pumpkin and cuccumber seedlings ready for
your veggie patch.
Yuccas only $1 to $4 depending on size
We also need donations of seedling trays and punnets, large
plastic pots, garden hoses, soaker hoses, sprinklers and irrigation pipes, as we get organised for a dry summer.
For the kitchen, we’d love more glass jars with lids and lemons.
Here’s another recipe – this time a healthy, tasty Vegie Stir Fry
that we’ve been making in the kitchen, though in class we
make it without the almonds.
Happy gardening and cooking!
