VET355-CISCO NETWORK TECHNICIAN FUNDAMENTALS
SMALL NETWORKS
MODULE DESCRIPTION:
This module is designed to prepare students for the (C)isco (C)ertified (E)ntry (N)etworking
(T)echnician exam. Completion of this course provides students with the skills needed to install,
operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network, including basic network security. The
curriculum covers networking fundamentals, WAN technologies, basic security and wireless
concepts, routing and switching fundamentals, and configuring simple networks. CCENT
certification is also the first step toward achieving CCNA, which covers medium size enterprise
branch networks with more complex connections.
Upon completion of this course students should take exam 100-101 ICND1 to earn their CCENT
Certification.

Prerequisite Course: VET 304 – Technical Foundations for IT Professionals
Upon completion of VET355 students should be able to:
Install, operate and troubleshoot a small switched and routed network
Understand the operation of a data networks
Explain the OSI and TCP/IP models and protocols
Implement a small switched network
Implement an IP addressing scheme and IP services to meet network requirements for a
small branch office
• Describe basic routing concepts (including: packet forwarding, router lookup process)
• Describe the operation of Cisco routers (including: router bootup process, POST, router
components)
• Manage Cisco IOS
• Implement password and physical security

Verify network status and router operation using basic utilities (including: ping,
traceroute,telnet,SSH,arp, ipconfig), SHOW & DEBUG commands
Describe standards associated with wireless media
Identify security threats to a network and describe general methods to mitigate those
threats
Describe different methods for connecting to a WAN
Configure and verify a basic WAN serial connection
