What does the word "church" mean for you? If someone were to ask you about your church and why it's important, what would be your response? When we join the United Methodist Church, we covenant with the rest of the church by committing to be faithful through our "Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service and Witness." The church recently celebrated World Communion and as we shared in the holy meal, I remembered a quote from Howard Snyder's book "The Radical Wesley" where he said, "Wesley's experience shows also the importance of the church being in some sense a sacramental community." The world around us pulls in many directions. Sometimes we find ourselves in a tension between the world and the church (beliefs). John Wesley, the father of Methodism, would call us to return to the constant foundation we find in Christ and remember the sacrifice that He gave that we might have salvation from our sinfulness. As we are called to mirror Christ's sacrifice in our living, consider how it is manifest in your day to day activities. What does it mean for you to be a "living sacrifice" for God? I pray that each of us may consider how we can be sacrificial through our "Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service and Witness." The calling of God is upon all of us, young and old alike. May we sense with eagerness and urgency the need to be faithful disciples for the Lord! Blessings, dr Phil Pancake Day Saturday, November 1, 2014 • 8:00 – 11:00 AM First United Methodist Church of Frankfort 211 Washington Street Frankfort, KY 40601 502.227.7430 office hrs: 8:30-3:00 M-F www.firstumcfrankfort.com First United Methodist Church Wesley Center, Asbury Hall 211 Washington Street • Frankfort, Kentucky Adults $3.50 in advance, $4 at door • Children (12 & under) $2.00 Sponsored by the United Methodist Men Net proceeds to be donated to charitable causes Glorify God by Connecting People with Jesus Christ 4 Basic Ways to Leave a Legacy for Your Church The Permanent Endowment and Planned Giving Committee suggest there are four basic ways to advance the ministry of First United Methodist Church. OUTRIGHT GIFTS: Made during your lifetime, an outright gift is irrevocable and tax deductible. In most instances, a non-cash gift of appreciated stock has more beneficial tax advantages to the donor than a cash gift. LIFE INCOME AGREEMENTS: Life income agreements allow you to make a gift during your lifetime but retain the income generated from your gift for the remainder of your life. Two commonly used options are: 1) a Charitable Gift Annuity; and 2) a Charitable Remainder Trust. Life income gift plans offer benefits such as increased income, partial or complete bypass of capital gains, and a significant charitable income tax deduction. BEQUESTS: A bequest made in your will allows you to plan a gift to become effective at your death that is probably more significant than anything you could have done during your lifetime. Also, it does not jeopardize your financial security because it is done with assets you are no longer depending upon. ENDOWMENTS: An endowment is a permanent fund which you can create to fund the ministry or program of your choice in perpetuity. The principal is invested for growth and only the income is released each year. A permanent endowment is a good way for you to say: • I believe in the future of my church and its ministries. • I want to be guided in my stewardship by my belief that all I have is a trust from God. • I want my legacy to help create a heritage that future generations can continue to celebrate as joyfully as we celebrate our rich heritage today. For more information on how you can include your church in your estate plan, contact Dr. Phil, your attorney, your financial advisor, one of the Permanent Endowment and Planned Giving Committee members, or David Bowles [(888) 841-7935)] at the Kentucky United Methodist Foundation. Sympathy T his year marks the 31st Anniversary of First Church's providing Christmas joy to children in the Frankfort community through the annual Ruth Spurrier Children's Christmas Benefit. What is commonly known as the “Toy Sale” will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014. This year, First Church has a goal of serving at least 150 children. The Toy Sale Committee obtains the percentages of students in the elementary schools who receive free/reduced lunches. Based upon the enrollment of each school, those percentages are used to determine the number of "slots" allowed per school to make up the 150 total. The family resource person in each school fills the slots by determining which students are from families who need help the most. The slots are filled not only by students but also by the students’ siblings from infants to age 12, which may include other siblings in the same school. (For example, one student plus two siblings will use three slots. If a school has 20 slots, they may be quickly filled.) Each family resource person submits his/her list to the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army coordinates with First Church, the Fire Department, the King’s Center and others to ensure that a family does not receive toys from more than one of these organizations. However, this does not preclude the families from participating in other community Christmas benefits. After the Salvation Army submits a final coordinated list of eligible children to the family resource people and they, in turn, send it to us, shoppers are assigned ages and genders and sent checks and instructions for purchasing toys. Enough toys are purchased for the Toy Sale so that parents can "buy" for a quarter each, two toys for each of their children. Shoppers turn in receipts for the toys they purchased to account for the money they received for shopping. Toys that are left over from the Toy Sale are stored for the next We express our sympathy to Erika Hancock and her family in the death of her mother, Melinda “Robin” Weigel, on October 14th.
