Chaplain’s chat This prayer was found in the coat of a dead girl in the Ravensbruck concentration camp where approximately 92 000 people died. Some refer to it as the Ravensbruck prayer. Today we consider how a person’s remarkable faith shaped her in the midst of extreme cruelty Lord Remember not only the men and women of good will but all those of ill will. Do not only remember all the sufferings they have subjected us to. Remember the fruits we brought forth thanks to this suffering – Our comradeship Our loyalty Our humility Our courage and generosity, the greatness of heart that all of this inspired. And when they come to judgement, let all those fruits we have borne be their reward and their forgiveness. Amen. God bless you as you consider how your faith shapes your response to life especially the difficult parts of life which have the possibility of bringing out our very best or our very worst. Be challenged with me by this prayer. Umfundisi. Page 1 of 6 Scholar news We bade farewell to the Class of 2014 last Friday at their Valediction Service. We also performed for the monthly Silver Seniors get-together in White River. The aim of the day was to provide some light-hearted music and entertainment for the elderly, as they are so often a forgotten part of society. The reward of smiles and compliments makes the effort worthwhile. We were also asked to visit the alzheimers patients at Herfsakker and the reward of having the elderly sing and clap along to songs with which they were unfamiliar was hugely rewarding. The scholars are encouraged to meet-and-greet those who attended. This is not easy to do, as often the thought of communicating with the aged can be intimidating. Our scholars however, again did us proud, by lovingly greeting and having simple conversations with little old ladies and gentlemen. Go Penryn Pride! Judy Liebenberg Choir convenor 2 Report back from MADD! (Music, Art, Dance and Drama). That is Penryn’s MADD week. A showcase of Penryn talent was on display this past week. MADD kicked up its heels with the Cultural Awards Assembly held on Friday, 10 October. Scholars received recognition for the time and effort they put into eisteddfod, plays, musical evenings, cultural inter-house activities and the Penryn College Choir. MADD week then followed the awards ceremony. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday wer a showcase of talent that was not to be missed. The scholars outdid themselves. With prestige performances from the recent Nelspruit Eisteddfod, mimes, prose, instrumentals, even Dr Seuss! What a brilliant opportunity to see Penryn talent in action. The matric art exhibition is on display in the Penreach Shalamuka Centre and is also open to the public. Renee Comins Cultural Convenor "Doodle for Google" competition Below are entries in the “Doodle for Google” competition. The theme is " My African Dream". Judging by some well- known South African celebrities (Pat Lambie, DJ Fresh and Yvonne Chaka Chaka to name a few) will start on 24 October. We wish all the participants the best of luck and in eager anticipation, look forward to the outcome. 3 4 Under the Marula ……………… Penryn College group photo Mauritius Afriasia sevens An unforgettable experience and opportunity was had by Ernest Mthethwa, Ty James, Hadrick Coertze and William Wilken at the recent International 7s Mauritius Afriasia rugby tournament held in Mauritius. Well done to our 2nd XI cricket for making it through to the final of the Ehlanzeni 1st League. They came up against a strong NHS team featuring players with 1st XI experience and unfortunately lost by 50 runs. A great achievement though. We end the cricket season off with the annual Lads vs Dads match on Saturday. This promises to be a festive affair. The annual Sports Awards Dinner was reported on in last week’s newsletter. The idea of having 1st team captains addressing the audience instead of a guest speaker seemed to pay off. Given the escalating costs of the dinner, we will be reviewing the format of the event. I have received a number of queries regarding the awarding of trophies, as these are not covered by the Colours and Awards Policy. Criteria taken into account are the player’s attitude towards practices, officials, opponents and team mates; commitment to practices, and regional or provincial representation. This is decided on by the coaches concerned. As such, the “best” player might not receive the Player of the Year trophy, once the above criteria are taken into account. Swimming and athletics have started in earnest. This weekend sees our swimmers participating in the Top Schools Gala at Van Riebeeck pool and the athletes giving of their best at the Triple J meeting at Rob Ferreira high school. Tennis We had an encouraging trip to St Dominics in Newcastle last Friday and Saturday. The girls did Penryn proud and won the doubles as well as the singles. Their tennis was good and all the girls said that they enjoyed the trip. St Dominics are keen to come to Nelspruit and play us next year around March/April. 5 On a personal note Thank you to everyone who offered support (moral or financial) for my climbing of Kilimanjaro on behalf of the SPCA recently; it is greatly appreciated. I’ve added a few photos from the trip. I really battled with altitude sickness and experienced regular bouts of nausea and disorientation, but managed to summit at 8:05am last Thursday. Temperatures that night varied between minus 12 and minus 15 degrees, with rest stops being limited to 2 – 3 minutes, to prevent fingers and toes starting to freeze. On summit day we walked for more than 14 hours, so as to camp at a lower altitude than our starting point. It was especially awesome camping above the clouds (middle pic). . Attached is a collage of my trip. Conan Olivier Sports Co-ordinator Nepal World Challenge - July 2015 Applications close on 30 October 2014. Please note that we have extended this closing date.
