During the period of Green revolution, farmers were practiced to use high yielding varieties, hybrids, indiscriminate use of pesticides and fertilizers. There was no doubt, that the productivity was increased. However, the indiscriminate usage of pesticides resulted in ground water pollution, accumulation of pesticide residues in the food stuffs, development of resistance among plant pathogens and pests. Hence, to mitigate the emerging issues in the management of plant diseases, the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology (ISMPP) was established during 1971. ISMPP is fully devoted to disseminate scientific advancements in plant disease research through its official publication namely Journal of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Review of Plant Pathology and ISMPP Newsletter. The society annually organizes the conferences and symposia for facilitating interaction among researchers and faster exchange and dissemination of the advances in plant disease research. th It is with the same objective that the 36 Annual Conference and Symposium on “Challenges and Management Approaches for Crop Diseases of National Importance – Status and Prospects” is being organized during February 12-14, 2015 by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University under the aegis of Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai.
