Outline
The Certificate in Health Science programme is a full-time, 17
week programme which offers stimulating studies and provides a
pathway to entry into a professional qualification of your choice, for
example Registered Nurse, and is offered at our Hawke’s Bay and
Tairäwhiti campuses.
The Certificate in Health Science programme enables graduates to
gain an academic level to enter our degree level programme, the
Bachelor of Nursing, offered at the Hawke’s Bay and Tairäwhiti
campuses.
In this application pack you will find information about the
programme, costs, and descriptions for each of the subjects covered
in this programme.

Job Opportunities
Graduates of this programme will be awarded the Certificate in
Health Science. This qualification can lead to further study in the
Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Recreation and Sport, Diploma in
Therapeutic Sport Massage, Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapy.
Current trends indicate a growing need for well-qualified people in
these areas.

You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised
as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different
forms including study while at high school, study at a private training
establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences
or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply

English language entry requirement:
Applicants for whom English is not their first language must have an
acceptable level of English language fluency prior to enrolment in the
programme. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including
successful study of a programme in which English was the language
of instruction, completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English
Language (Level 3), approved scores on IELTS tests (5.5 Academic with
no band score lower than 5.5), completion of accepted international
equivalents, or completion of an EIT assessment.

Digital fluency, mathematics and study skills

The purpose of this course is to offer digital fluency, mathematical and study skills to students without
formal qualifications, or who have been away from study for an extended length of time.

This course provides grounding in basic sciences. Its purpose is to raise the knowledge and understanding
of pre-entry Health and Sport Science students to a level which will enable them to manage first study at
level 5, first level tertiary human anatomy and physiology courses.
First Aid

Applicants for nursing and many other health science programmes are generally required to have a
Standard First Aid Certificate as a pre-requisite to entry. The First Aid Certificate which is taught within
the Certificate in Health Science contains the following NZQA units:

XX26552 - Demonstrate knowledge for common first aid conditions and how to respond to them
Human Development and Behaviour Related to Health

This course aims to introduce the student to human development and psychology theories that explain
human behaviours across the lifespan.
