‘Grandma’s Attic’ Due
At Scotch Plains Baptist
SCOTCH PLAINS — The Scotch
Plains Baptist Church will once again
hold its Grandma’s Attic Bazaar on
Saturday, November 1, from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend
this day of celebration, shopping,
dining and fun for the entire family.
Among the merchandise will be oneof-a-kind items, both brand-new and
used; Christmas and other gift items;
toys; clothes for the entire family; china;
glassware; kitchen and household
items. Visitors also may have lunch at
the café or try some fresh-baked goods
from Linda’s bake table.
All proceeds from the 2014 bazaar will be used for worthy causes,
including special mission projects
and aid to the needy.
The Scotch Plains Baptist Church
is located at 333 Park Avenue in
Scotch Plains, across from Bank of
America, between Mountain Avenue
and Grand Street. Attendees are

Library Teen Scene
To Be Held Oct. 28
SCOTCH PLAINS — The Scotch
Plains Public Library invites youth
in grades 6 to 12 to come to the
library for Teen Scene on Tuesday,
October 28, at 3:30 p.m. Participants will have an opportunity to
enjoy Wii, Nok-hockey and snacks,
as well as browse new books at the
library. There is no charge.
Those interested are encouraged to

Public Library is located at 1927 Bartle

Fair Trade Sale Set
For Two Weekends
WESTFIELD — The Peace and
Justice Committee of Holy Trinity
and St. Helen’s will hold its annual
Fair Trade Sale this Saturday and
Sunday, October 25 and 26, and the
following Saturday and Sunday, November 1 and 2.
The sale will take place from 2 to 7
p.m. on October 25 and 8:30 a.m. to
3 p.m. on October 26 at the Holy
Trinity Parish Center, located at 315
First Street, Westfield. The sale will
move to St. Helen’s Roman Catholic
Church, located at 1600 Rahway
Avenue, Westfield, for the weekend
of November 1 and 2.
The sale will feature handcrafted
items from Third World countries,
including scarves, jewelry, ornaments and other decorative items.
Coffee and chocolate also will be
available for sale.
Goods purchased at the Fair Trade
Sale help ensure that Third World
artisans and farmers receive fair compensation for their labor, which helps
to lift them out of poverty.

For Messiah Performance
FANWOOD — The music ministry of the Fanwood Presbyterian
Church is preparing for its annual
performance of Handel’s Messiah,
the Christmas portion, on Sunday,
December 7, at 4 p.m. Tickets for
this performance are $20 and are on
sale to the general public beginning
today, Thursday, October 23.
Under the direction of Tom
Berdos, director of music ministries at the Fanwood Presbyterian
Church, professional opera soloists
soprano Jamie Baer Peterson,
mezzo Hanne Ladefoged-Dollase,
tenor Brian Ernstes and bass Ivan
Conrad will perform. The 70-plusvoice chorus will be accompanied
by a full professional orchestra.
“This is our fourth year presenting Messiah to the greater Fanwood
community,” said Mr. Berdos. “We
are delighted to have so many local
singers joining us, and look forward to a rich musical experience
on December 7. In addition, we are
very enthused about presenting the
concert in our newly refurbished
chancel and sanctuary with its dynamic acoustics.”

On Tap For Halloween
WESTFIELD — The Westfield
Neighborhood Council (WNC), a
private, non-profit, community social service organization serving children, youth and adults, will present
its inaugural Trunk or Treat event on
Friday, October 31, from 6 to 8 p.m.
There is no charge.
Designed as a safe, fun Halloween
alternative for families, this event will
take place at WNC headquarters, located at 127 Cacciola Place, Westfield.
Light refreshments will be served.

Halloween Program
SCOTCH PLAINS — The Historical Society of Scotch Plains and
Fanwood will offer as its program
“The Evolution of Halloween” during the group’s monthly meeting
on Tuesday, October 28.
“Hallow” is from an Old English
word meaning “spirits” or “souls,”
and “een” is the contraction of
“eve.” Thus as the words have
evolved into Halloween, so have
the customs surrounding it evolved.
As an example, early American
colonists used turnips for their jacko-lanterns, not pumpkins.
Attendees will learn more facts
about the evolution of Halloween,
from Roman times to today. Local
residents of various ages will share
their memories of Halloween and
participants will trace the evolution
of local Halloween celebrations
over the last 90 years.
This meeting will be free and
open to everyone. It will be held at
the historic Scotch Hills Country
Club, located at Plainfield Avenue
and Jerusalem Road in Scotch
Plains. Fellowship and refreshments
will follow the program. Costume
“previews” for Halloween are encouraged.
Program to Address
College Success
MOUNTAINSIDE — The
Mountainside Public Library, located
at 1 Constitution Plaza, will present a
“Complete Guide to College Funding” on Thursday, October 30, from 7
to 8:30 p.m.
Presented by Bill Logue and Matt
Filik, this program will provide a
detailed overview of the particulars
of preparing for college success and
highlight major pitfalls to avoid that
could greatly increase the odds of
college failure.
Topics covered in this seminar will
include college admissions; college
majors; need- and non-need-based
aid, including grants, scholarships
and self-help, tax benefits for higher
education and unique college financing programs from federal and state
sources, and year-by-year planning
steps, among other aspects.
The American Education Foundation will sponsor this program, which
is offered to the public free of charge.

Miss Katherine Leigh Taylor, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William P.
Taylor III of Westfield, was married
on Saturday, August 23, 2014, to Mr.
Alexander Daniel Knopes. He is the
son of Dr. and Mrs. Keith Knopes of
Rancho Mirage, Calif.
The bride also is the granddaughter of Mrs. Joyce Taylor and the late
Mr. William P. Taylor, Jr. of Westfield
and Mrs. Betty Jo Williams and the
late Mr. Harry Williams of Kinston,
N.C. The groom is the grandson of
Mrs. Lorraine Knopes of Tempe, Ariz.
and the late Mr. Bob Knopes and the
late Dr. Donald Klopfer and Mrs.
Dorothy Klopfer.
The afternoon ceremony took place
at The Presbyterian Church in
Westfield with the Reverend Emily
Wilmarth of Highlands, N.C. officiating. A reception followed at Echo
Lake Country Club in Westfield.
Given in marriage by her parents,
the bride wore a strapless Bliss gown
by Monique Lhuillier with a beaded
embroidered belt. She carried a bouquet of white and purple hydrangea.
Miss Elizabeth Kline of Boston,
Mass. and Miss Lauren McCurdy of
New York City were the Maids of
Honor. The bridal attendants included
Mrs. Claire Evans of Edenton, N.C.
and Miss Rachel Phipps of Charlotte,
N.C., cousins of the bride; Mrs.
Meredith Hayes of Carrboro, N.C.;
Miss Sonali Desai of Washington,
D.C.; Miss Katherine Coats-Thomas
of Arlington, Va.; Miss Leighton
Martin of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Miss
Jennifer Edwards of Denver, Colo.
All wore deep purple gowns and carried bouquets of purple hydrangea.

Mrs. Barbara Knopes, mother of
the groom, and Miss Sarah Bergthold,
future sister-in-law of the bride, did
scripture readings.
The bride is a 2007 graduate of
Westfield High School. She graduated from Wake Forest University in
North Carolina in 2011 with a double
major in elementary education and
communications-media studies. She
is a Marketing Coordinator for Altitude TV Sports and Entertainment,
Denver, Colo.
The groom is a 2006 graduate of
Mercer Island High School, Mercer
Island, Wash. He also is a 2011 graduate of Wake Forest University with a
double major in biology and economics. He recently graduated from
the Korbel School of the University
of Denver with a Masters in Global
Finance, Trade and Economic Integration and an International Master
of Business Administration. He currently is employed as the Director of
Education at the World Trade Center
Denver, Denver, Colo.
A rehearsal dinner hosted by the
groom’s parents was held on Friday,
August 22, at Ferraro’s Restaurant. A
bridal shower was held at the home of
Mrs. Joyce Taylor, hosted by Mrs.
Karin Engel and Ms. Vicki Kimmins.
Following a honeymoon in Hawaii,
the couple resides in Denver, Colo.
