The Frank and Caroline Gannett Emergency Center is a fast-paced ED, a state-of-the-art facility that manages more than

Perioperative Nursing

center). There are 2 Davinci robots that are used by urology and GYN. The transplant program involves livers and kidneys

3.License/Certification Required: NYS Licensed RN, CPR (AHA)
4.Skills (to include equipment, software, etc.): Effective interpersonal communication and problem solving skills.

General Purpose
Assesses and evaluate health and illness needs of UHS patients. Plans and initiates appropriate nursing interventions. This
position is a recurring academic appointment that runs Mid-August to Mid-May..
Specific Responsibilities
1.Assesses and evaluates patient symptoms, reactions and progress and either: intervenes directly, within the Nursing
Care guidelines and sound principles of nursing practice; or consults the appropriate care provider.
2.Administers medications and other therapeutic or diagnostic procedures within a framework of established
scientific principles, precautions and accepted standards of care.
3.Provides for patients' care, comfort and safety by monitoring the UHS physical environment and by being alert to
potential alteration in patients' health status.
4.Maintains accurate and complete documentation of all interactions involving patient care. This includes SOAP notes,
telephone encounters, and other official logs and records.
5.Provides occasional supervision and direction to other RNs and/or non-nurse staff as assigned by Associate Director for
Nursing.
6.Provides individual patient teaching and related counseling, as well as participates in general health education activities
of UHS staff.
7.Participates in external and internal quality assurance and accreditation activities designed to evaluate and improve UHS
services.
8.Participates in internal and external emergency preparedness and incident response activities.
9.Assists and collaborates with other UHS health care providers in delivering general and specialized medical care.
10.Participates with other UHS staff members in the orientation and on-going clinical learning activities of student health
professionals.
11.Assumes responsibility for own professional growth: plans and/or participates in conferences, continuing education and
in-service activities. Keeps current in professional knowledge and issues. Needs a minimum of 5 continuing education
credits per year.
12.Functions within the philosophy, objectives and policies of UHS and interprets these to patients, University community
and community at large.
13.Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing, BSN preferred. Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New
York. At least one year of R.N. experience in direct patient care including assessment of health/illness status, utilization of
physical assessment skills and direct decision-making (e.g. choosing a course of action); or an equivalent combination of
education and experience. Meets RN core competencies in all areas.
