at Injambakkam
NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 27:
A man strangled his wife to death yesterday after he found that she was having
an illegal relationship with his brother.
According to police sources, Prabakaran (28) from Injambakkam,
worked in a private firm and was married to Saranya (23) for six months.
Last evening, police said, Prabakaran

Bala got into a heated argument, following which an angered Prabhakaran

Prabakaran is reported to have confessed
to the police that his neighbours had earlier
informed him about his wife’s extra-marital
affair, and that he couldn’t control his anger
when he caught the duo red- handed.

to Royapettah Government Hospital
and a case has been registered by
the Neelankarai police.

Looking ahead
n an apparent effort to mend differences with the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Shiv Sena today
announced that it will support any leader from the
BJP who will be given the task to lead the State. The
party even toned down its aggressive stand against
the division of Maharashtra, which is said to be on the
BJP’s agenda.
‘The people’s blessings cannot to be confined within
limits. Shiv Sena will stand with absolute force and
courage with whoever is given the chance to ride the
chariot to take Maharashtra forward,’ said an editorial
in party mouthpiece Saamna.
Following the Maharashtra state assembly results,
the Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had said that
his party will extend support to the BJP only after the
assurance of united Maharashtra.
Sena’s changed position comes in response to the
statement of Senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde on Sunday, where he said that the BJP wanted a tie-up with
the Sena, but without any condition.
Meanwhile, Indian medium-pacer Mohammed Shami
has been ruled out of the five-match ODI series against
Sri Lanka starting 2 November, due to an injury.
Maharashtra medium-pacer Dhawal Kulkarni has
replaced Shami in the 15-member Indian squad to be
led by Virat Kohli, which has been announced for the
first three ODIs, said a BCCI release.
Black money: Govt
reveals three names
q Only businessmen, no politicians in the list submitted to SC
New Delhi, Oct 27:
The Union government has named
three persons who are black money
account holders in an affidavit to the
Supreme Court.
According to reports, the three persons named are director of the Burman
Group, Pradip Burman, a Rajkot-based
bullion trader Pankaj Chimanlal Lodya
and a Goa-based miner and owner of
Timblo Pvt Ltd Radha S Timblo.
Last week, it was revealed that the
Centre was likely to tell the apex
court the names of the people against
whom strong evidence exists of
stashing away black money in Swiss
banks in a major step in its crackdown
on India’s parallel economy.
On Monday, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi is reported
to have submitted a supplementary affidavit in the
apex court detailing plans
to submit the list of names
in a sealed envelope.
The court is due to continue hearings on a petition on black money the
following day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is moving fast to repatriate hundreds
of billions of dollars in slush funds or black
money stashed abroad, as part of a
wider clampdown on corruption that he
promised during his election campaign.

PANKAJ CHIMANLAL LODHIYA: He runs
a business house called Shreeji Group, and
is a bullion trader from Rajkot. The group’s
website says it initially started its business
operations in the realty sector and then began
its journey into bullion business. The group
is run by Pankaj Lodhia, his father Chimanlal
Laljibhai Lodhiya and his brother Kaushik Chimanlal Lodhiya.
The government is building pressure particularly on Switzerland,
seeking details of Indians who have
parked unaccounted for money in
Switzerland’s highly secretive banks.
It has quickly implemented a Supreme Court directive to set
up a high-powered special
investigation team, headed
by retired judge M B Shah,
to look into the issue.
While there are no official
estimates, Global Financial
Integrity (GFI), a Washington-based
think-tank, has estimated that Indians
had parked USD 462 billion in overseas
tax havens between 1948 and 2008.
Black money arises mainly from
incomes not disclosed to the government usually to avoid taxation, and,
sometimes, because of its criminal
links. About a third of India’s black

nations providing those names to India.
There were murmurs of protest within
the ruling BJP that not disclosing names
would hurt the party’s image after it had
made bringing back black money, a key
issue in a general election that it won by
a landslide. The Centre’s stand also drew
a strong response from the Congress,
which accused it of hypocrisy.
Turning the tables on the Congress,
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had recently said the disclosing of names of
people holding black money accounts
will embarrass the opposition party.
The Congress had hit back, daring
the government to come out with
complete information without indulging in selective leaks and pointing out
that the Congress is not going to be
blackmailed under any such threat.

2G: SC refuses relief
to Dayalu Ammal
NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 27:
The Supreme court today refused to relieve DMK president M Karunanidhi’s
wife Dayalu Ammal in the 2G case.
According to reports, a plea to relieve her from the multicrore case was filed
by her daughter Selvi.
This comes at a time when just two days left for a special 2G court to deliver
its order on the issue of taking cognisance of the CBI chargesheet in the AircelMaxis case, in which former Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran, his brother
Kalanithi Maran and others have been named as accused.
Earlier this month, Special Judge O P Saini reserved the order after hearing
the public prosecutor for the CBI, K K Goyal, who submitted that prima facie,
a case was made out against all the accused.
The CBI in August filed the charge sheet alleging that Dayanidhi Maran
had entered into a criminal conspiracy with T Ananda Krishnan, owner of
Malaysian company Maxis, and coerced Chinnakannan Sivasankaran, owner
of telecom company Aircel, to sell his shares to the former allegedly in lieu
of investments by the foreign company through another company into Sun
Direct TV Private Ltd.

Sandeep to replace

NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 27:
The Tamilnadu government today
said the Election Commission of
India, in consultation with the State
government, has nominated Sandeep
Saxena as the Chief Electoral Officer
of Tamilnadu.
An order issued by Chief Secretary

‘The Election Commission of India in

It added that the orders regarding the posting of a successor to

According to sources, Praveen Kumar had written to the Election Commission, seeking a transfer after the
Opposition parties found fault with his

SC rejects
Nalini’s plea
New Delhi, Oct 27:
The SupremeCourt today junked a
petition filed by Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convict Nalini against
law requiring Centre’s approval for
her release.
The apex court ordered that Nalini
and six other convicts in the case
cannot be released prematurely by
Tamilnadu government without consulting the Centre.
The Court had earlier issued notice
to the Centre on a plea
by Nalini, undergoing life
imprisonment in the case,
challenging the law mandating Centre’s approval
for her release and that of
six other convicts.
A bench headed by
Nalini
CJI R M Lodha sought
response from the Centre which had
earlier contended that Tamilnadu
can’t release the convicts without its
approval and had derailed the state
government’s decision to release them.
In her petition, Nalini challenged
Section 435(1) of the CrPC which
mandates the state government to
consult the Centre before premature
release of a convict if the case was
investigated by the CBI.
Nalini has been in jail for the last 23
years and undergoing life imprisonment
after her death sentence was commuted.
She was sentenced to death penalty by
the trial court on 28 January, 1998.
Her death sentence was commuted
to life term by the Tamilnadu Governor on 24 April, 2000.

Chennai, Oct 27:
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi’s ambitious ‘Swachh
Bharat’ programme seems
to be catching up with more
and more people joining the
‘cleaning bandwagon.’ Several organisations and associations too have pitched in,
it should be said in an effort
to keep the city neat.
Meanwhile, Chennai has
been named as ninth best
cosmopolitan city in the world
in a report published by Lonely
Planet, while constantly witnessing developments in various fields, is apparently seeing an increase in awareness
among the public to keep the
metropolis clean.
It is said that the ‘Swachh
Bharat’ mission’ has sparked
numerous awareness programmes in the city. Schools
and colleges have done their
bit to make the Prime Minister’s
call a reality.
That is not all, Chennaiites are thriving hard to
show the city in good light
by turning their focus on
cleanliness.
People belonging to all
strata of society - the working class, government employees to businessmen,
celebrities, et al are involved in cleaning work.
Promotions through the
social media is also one
big reason for more people
responding to Modi’s call.
Many neighborhood associations are involved in
cleaning roads and social activists are
pitching in too.
Speaking to News Today, Jayalakshmi,
a social activist said, ‘The need of the
hour is to clean the city. It is one of the
major civic problems faced by people
here. Therefore, everyone needs to work
towards keeping it tidy.’
‘(More) bins should be placed at public

Poll pointers
espite widespread misgivings about holding the election in the
flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission
has scheduled the Assembly poll in the State between 25 November
and 20 December, with the counting of votes set for 23 December.
The poll time-table for Jharkhand too was announced by the Chief
Election Commissioner V S. Sampath at a press conference in the
national capital on Saturday. The term of the present Assemblies
in both these States is due to end in January. While there can be no
problem in holding the poll in Jharkhand on schedule, it is in Jammu
and Kashmir that the ruling National Conference-Congress combine
had pleaded for putting off the polls in view of the unsettled conditions in the State due to the lingering effects of the unprecedented
floods last month.
Indeed, the NC leadership has termed the EC poll schedule as
`inopportune.’ Quite clearly, the Abdullah Government is reluctant
to go back to the people. Having frittered away its mandate in poor
performance and corruption scams, the NC-Congress alliance was in
a terrible shape. Sensing the shape of things to come, the two partners
had decided to go their own separate ways a couple of months ago.
Thanks to the drastic change in the political scenario nationally, the
father and son duo of Farooq and Omar Abdullah after a long time
find themselves friendless. All along, they had succeeded in hitching
their wagons to the dominant party in New Delhi. But things are
quite different now.
The ruling BJP is in no mood to yield any quarter to the Abdullahs.
In the recent Lok Sabha poll, the National Conference had failed to
win any of the six seats from the State. Indeed, the new BJP President
Amit Shah has sent a shiver down the spine of the NC leadership by
openly launching Mission-44 in Kashmir. The aim is for the BJP to so
overwhelm the old and tainted Kashmir-centric parties that the party
on its own can make a credible bid for power in the State. Whether
or not Shah’s mission will succeed remains to be seen, but there is
no denying his ambitions for the party he leads. Besides, Mehbooba
Mufti’s Peoples’ Democratic Party is keen to make a serious bid for
power in the State and, with that objective in view, it would not be
averse to an understanding with the BJP.
Since the Congress and the NC have irretrievably lost the trust of
the people, whether they fight the election jointly or separately can
make little difference to the ultimate outcome. However, a BJP-PDP
understanding can catapult them into the seats of power in Srinagar.
The State has suffered from enormous neglect due to the inability
of Omar Abdullah to get a grip on the administration. Even though
the jihadi terror has been more or less contained regardless of the
obligatory noises made periodically by the Pak-funded separatist
leaders, the people in the State have suffered for want of purposeful
governance. The recent floods further exposed the incompetence of
the Abdullah Government. It was the reason why the Prime Minister
on his visit to the State on Diwali undertook to transfer cash relief to
the victims of the floods directly into their bank accounts. Nobody
trusts the Abdullah Government.
Meanwhile, the conditions in Jharkhand which too is set to
simultaneously elect a new Assembly seem ripe for the return of the
BJP to power. Here the JMM-Congress-RJD combine had virtually
turned the government into a gravy train. In a state endowed with
vast natural resources, government leaders have openly colluded
with vested interests to denude it of its riches. After the stupendous
success of the BJP in Haryana and Maharashtra elections, a resurgent
BJP is bound to exert its energies to reclaim Jharkhand outright and
make a bid for sharing power with the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir.
Of course, no arrangement seems to have been made thus far
between the two parties, but from tentative moves it does appear
that the declaration of the poll schedule would lend a sense of
urgency for the two parties to reach some understanding. If that
happens, the process of mainstreaming of Jammu and Kashmir
would get a big boost.

Tippler trouble
Sir,
The liquor shop situated on the western side of Chakrapani Street at the
junction of Five Lights, poses trouble to residents and passersby.
The customers of this shop encroach the footpath by parking two-wheelers
haphazardly.
Walking is difficult for senior residents like me in the street with the pavement area completely taken over by the customers of liquor shop.
Also, these tipplers trouble the women and children who walk through
the area to reach the shrines and educational institutions situated nearby.
Most of the vehicles including the recently introduced small buses seldom respect the ‘No Entry’ signal at Thambiah Road and drive rashly into
Chakrapani Street.
For the benefit of residents and visitors, it is better to shut the concerned
liquor shop in this area.
R RAMADURAI,
Mambalam
Where is the space?
Sir,
T M Maisrty Street near Adyar is a so called ‘road’ with 15 feet width. It
starts from the main and busy junction of Vannanthurai in Besant Nagar.
It is the link road to Thiruvanmiyur and hundreds of vehicles pass through
the small road everyday.
All types of two-wheelers, cars and a number of vans are plying at high
speed. At the time of rainy season there is virtually a wet parade walking
through the tiny street. Water logging is very heavy in the street and virtually there is no space for your feet.

Samba time for Rousseff
SAO PAULO/BRASILIA:
Brazil’s leftist President Dilma
Rousseff narrowly won re-election on
Sunday after convincing voters that
her party’s strong record of reducing
poverty over the last 12 years was
more important than a recent economic slump.
After one of the closest, most divisive campaigns in Brazil in decades,
Rousseff won 51.6 percent of votes

leader Aecio Neves, who won 48.4

the votes tallied.
At a hotel in Brasilia where Rousseff

Ebola scare in Australia
SYDNEY:
Australian authorities said early
that a teenager who was in isolation in hospital had tested negative
for Ebola after she developed a
fever following her arrival from
Guinea.
The 18-year-old, who arrived in
Australia 12 days ago with eight
other family members, had been
in home quarantine in Brisbane before she developed
a raised temperature and was put into isolation at the
Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.
‘The Queensland Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette
Young, reports the results of tests on an 18-year-old
woman in Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital are
negative for Ebola virus disease,’
a statement from the office of the
Queensland Minister for Health
said. Young had said earlier that
a second test would be taken in
three days.
She would not specify the teenager’s nationality, but said she was
moving to Australia permanently
and authorities had been informed
of her family’s arrival several days before the flight.
The rest of the woman’s family was quarantined at
home. Young said Queensland health authorities were
monitoring four families from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra
Leone, where the vast majority of Ebola cases have
occurred.
Boko Haram strikes again
KANO:
Boko Haram gunmen kidnapped at least 30 boys and girls from a village in
northeast Nigeria during the weekend. The
abductions are the latest
in a string of recent kidnappings by Boko Haram
that dims hope for the
anticipated release of
219 schoolgirls ?held
by the group since April
following a controversial ceasefire declared
by Nigerian authorities.
Heavily armed Boko
Haram gunmen invaded the town of Mafa, in
Borno state, on Friday
through Saturday and seized 30 boys and girls, local leaders said.
The news of the kidnappings was slow to emerge due to lack of telecom
service in the region, where most telecom towers have been destroyed in
Boko Haram’s five-year insurgency against Nigeria’s government.
‘In the past two days Boko Haram insurgents stormed Mafa and abducted
30 boys aged 13 and above and girls aged 11 and above,’ Mafa local government chairman Shettima Maina said.
Mallam Ashiekh Mustapha, the local chief of Mafa who confirmed the
abductions, said the kidnappers also stole 300 cows from the farming
community in the raid.
Gunman in Canada attack
prepared video of himself
TORONTO:
A gunman who shot and killed a
soldier at Canada’s national war memorial and then stormed Parliament
before he was gunned down had
prepared a video recording of himself
that police say shows he was driven
by ideological and political motives,
police has said.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police
Commissioner Bob Paulson said in
a statement yesterday they have ‘persuasive evidence
that Michael Zehaf-Bibeau’s attack was driven by
ideological and political motives.’
A detailed analysis of the video was being conducted
and Paulson said they cannot release the video at
this time. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has called
Wednesday’s shooting a terror attack, and the bloodshed raised fears that Canada is suffering reprisals
for joining the US-led air campaign
against Islamic State extremists in
Iraq and Syria.
Police are investigating ZehafBibeau’s interactions with numerous
individuals in the days leading up to
the attack and whether they could
have contributed or facilitated it.
Paulson said a knife carried by
Zehaf-Bibeau was taken from his
aunt’s property in Mont Tremblant,
Quebec, and they’re looking into how he got the rifle.
Paulson called it an old, uncommon gun that police
suspect he could have also hidden on the property.
Paulson said investigators also identified where he
got his money for the car he bought and his pre-attack
activities. He said Zehaf-Bibeau has been employed
in the oil fields in Alberta, saved his money and had
access to a considerable amount of funds.
Thousands flee
during truce
in Lebanon
TRIPOLI:
Thousands of civilians fled their
homes in a battered district of
northern Lebanon’s Tripoli, taking
advantage of an informal truce
in fighting between the army and
Islamist militants.
An AFP journalist in Tripoli
reported the lull in fighting after
three days of heavy clashes in
Tripoli, the country’s second biggest
city, even as the army vowed to
crush the militants.
But Syria’s Al-Qaeda branch
renewed a threat that it will execute
one of 27 Lebanese soldiers it has
held hostage since August unless
the military halts its operations
in Tripoli. The coastal city has
seen repeated clashes between
Sunni militants sympathetic to rebel
fighters in neighbouring Syria and
Alawites loyal to the Damascus
regime.
The Sunnis have recently focussed
their attacks on the army over its
alleged support for Damascus
ally Hezbollah. The latest clashes
erupted on Friday at the city’s
historic market, which is a major
tourist attraction.
Army mortar fire pounded
the impoverished, outlying
neighbourhood of Islamist bastion
Bab al-Tebbaneh, where the
gunmen were pushed back and
cornered. Five civilians have been
killed in three days, among them
a child and two adults yesterday,
said a security official. After pleas
from residents and mediation by
clerics, the army allowed thousands
of civilians who had been caught in
the crossfire for hours to flee Bab
al-Tebbaneh.

New Delhi, Oct 27 (PTI):

To put in place a more effective

The proposal involves joint inspection of brokers, as also collection of

Besides, offsite joint inspection

Serena sends ominous
message to rivals
Singapore, Oct 27:
The older Serena Williams gets,
the more dominant she becomes.
At 33, an age when most players
start to fade, her grip on women’s
tennis looks as secure as ever.
Each time she is presented with
a new challenge she finds a way
to overcome it, emerging stronger
each time, and her will to win is
not fading.
On Sunday, she won the WTA
Finals — an elite tournament that
sits just behind the grand slams in
terms of importance -- for the third
year in a row, despite concerns
about her health and form.
She arrived in Singapore with
an injured knee and suffered her
heaviest defeat in 16 years in her
group match with Simona Halep,
who is 10 years her junior.
Yet, four days later, she turned
the tables on Halep, spanking the
world number three 6-3, 6-0 in the
final, proving yet again that she is
not only the most powerful player
in women’s tennis, but the most
determined.
‘It’s great. I didn’t expect to
end the year on this note,’ she
said. ‘I was just happy to even

Barcelona, Oct 27:
Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta
could miss next week’s La Liga clash
with Celta Vigo and the Champions
League tie against Ajax Amsterdam
after injuring himself against Real
Madrid on Saturday. Iniesta has had
plenty of highs and lows during his
career but will quickly want to forget
a nightmare ‘Clasico’.
Not only did he commit the howler
that led to Real’s third goal in a 3-1
comeback win at the Bernabeu but
he was also forced off with a calf
injury in the 71st minute. Tests on
Sunday confirmed damage to the calf
muscle in his right leg. ‘How the injury
develops will determine when he’ll
be able to return to training with the
group,’ Barca said on their website
(www.fcbarcelona.es) on Sunday.
SA soccer
captain killed by
intruders
Johannesburg, Oct 27:
South Africa’s soccer captain Senzo
Meyiwa was shot dead by intruders
in a township near Johannesburg on
Sunday in what local media reported
as a botched robbery.
The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper
was shot after two men entered a
house in Vosloorus where Meyiwa
was visiting, at about 8 p.m. local
time, South Africa police said in a
statement. The intruders fled, along
with a third man who had been
waiting outside. Other people in the
house were unharmed.
Local media said the intruders had
demanded a mobile phone.
‘We can confirm that Bucs (Pirates)
keeper Senzo Meyiwa has been shot
and sadly declared dead on arrival
at hospital,’ the South African Police
Services said on its Twitter feed.
‘We must emphasise break of
protocol... We know there are upset
and hurt pple (people) at the house
where (the) incident occurred and at
hospital. Calm please.
‘We can assure all South Africans
that we will do all we can to bring
Meyiwa’s killers (to) book,’ the police
said in a further tweet, offering a
reward of R150,000 ($13,700).

be competing here. ‘It makes
everything much more sweeter
and satisfying, especially for me.
It wasn’t my best year, but I’m just
happy to have won one more title
this year.’ There was an element
of ruthlessness about the way
she disposed of Halep in the final,
an ominous warning to the next
generation that the world number
one is as motivated as ever.
‘I made so many unforced errors
in our first match, and I think
knowing that she has the ability
and the capability to play so well,
I knew that I had to step up my
game,’ Serena said.
‘I knew that I had to play a
lot better, so I obviously was
expecting a much better player
than I was in the earlier rounds.
But I think being ready for that
really was able to help me out.
‘It was also good for me to lose
that match, because now I know
what to expect next year. I really
know and I’m ready for that next
year. So I know what to go home
and work on once pre-season
starts.’ That is bad news for her
rivals, both present and past, as
she closes in on the sport’s most
revered records.
Last month, she won her 18th
grand slam singles title at the U.S.
Open, elevating her to a threeway tie for fourth with Martina
Navratilova and Chris Evert.
Margaret Court holds the all-time
record with 24.
Serena never talks about records
but is constantly reminded of
where she sits. Time, rather than
her opponents, now looks like her
biggest hurdle.

Rejuvenated Federer
sets sights on No.1
Swiss wins home tournament for 6th time
Basel, Oct 27:
Roger Federer has his sights set on
ending the year as the world’s topranked player after the 33-year-old
claimed his fifth title of the year in his
home town on Sunday.
The 17-times grand slam champion
outclassed David Goffin 6-2, 6-2 to
win the Swiss Indoor tournament in
Basel for a sixth time, moving ever
closer to Serbian Novak Djokovic at
the top of the rankings in the process.
A strong finish at the Paris Masters
and the ATP World Tour Finals could
see him end the year as number
one for the first time since 2009 -proof that his skills are not in decline
despite the advancing years and two
sets of twins.
‘It would be very special, you can’t
say it’s not important, world number
one, it’s what it’s all about really,
together with some tournaments you
really care about,’ Federer told the
ATP’s official television channel after
his 51-minute thrashing of Goffin.
‘With the year I’ve had and the
amount of finals I’ve played, the
level of tennis I’ve played, I’m really
pleased that I have a shot at being
there.
‘But I’m sure Novak will be very
motivated. It’s going to be interesting
weeks ahead.’
Federer, whose 302 weeks as world
number one is a record, as is his
streak of 237 consecutive weeks atop
the rankings, is less than 500 points
behind Djokovic with a combined
2,500 points up for grabs in Paris
and London.
Djokovic won both of those titles
and can potentially close the gap.

The first two of those wins came as
Federer helped steer Switzerland into
the Davis Cup final against France.
Murray triumphs
Andy Murray saved five match
points before fighting back to beat
Tommy Robredo 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (8)
in a grueling Valencia Open final on
Sunday.
Last month, Murray also saved five
match points against the Spaniard
on his way to winning the final in
Shenzhen, China. This time, he had
to do it in front of Robredo’s home
fans, who ended up applauding
the effort made by both players on
Valencia’s indoor hard court.
Robredo came from a break down
in the second set to force a tiebreaker
that could have earned him his first
win against Murray since 2007.
Murray looked flustered, slamming
his racket down twice, but he
managed to save two match points
before leveling at a set each.
The Briton then saved three more
match points in the final tiebreaker
before hitting a decisive backhand to
win in 3 hours, 20 minutes, making
it the longest final on the ATP circuit
this year. Murray embraced Robredo
over the net at the finish.

third - Cara Black and Sania Mirza
steamrolled Hsieh Su-Wei and

Black and Sania’s road to the final
was anything but routine - they fought

Katarina Srebotnik in the semifinals.
Sania joked after that semifnal

Younis wants to
play World Cup
Karachi, Oct 27 (PTI):
Pakistan’s man of the match in the
first Test win over Australia in Dubai,
Younis Khan, is keen to
play in next year’s World
Cup despite the national
selectors sidelining him
for the one-day series
against the
Australians.
Younis, who scored
twin centuries in the
Dubai Test, said he
was ready to play in the
World Cup in Australia
and New Zealand if the
selectors put faith in him.
‘I just feel that the selectors should
not take into consideration age,
position or colour while selecting
teams. No matter what age a batsman
is, if he is in form and has match
fitness he should be selected to play
in ODIs,’ Younis said on Geo Super
channel.
‘The idea should be to
play the players in form.
Age should not be a bar.
If any player can serve
Pakistan cricket in the
World Cup he should be
considered for selection.
It is about playing the
right combination for a
match or event,’ Younis
said.
Younis, who has
become the highest Test centurymaker for Pakistan with 26 hundreds
after the Dubai Test, said he was

‘We came out and didn’t give
them any free points,’ Black said.
‘Like Sania said, it was one of
the best matches we’ve played
against them. We had a game
plan, and I think we executed it
well.”
It was their fifth and biggest
WTA doubles title together. They
had one Premier title (Beijing
in 2013), two other Premiers
(Tokyo in 2013 and 2014) and an
International (Oeiras in 2014).
But it will be their last, too - while
much has been made of Hsieh and
Peng’s partnership wrapping up in
Singapore, Black and Mirza will
be splitting up too, a subject they
discussed in their presser.
India slides in
ICC Test rankings
Dubai, Oct 27 (PTI):
India are all set to drop a rung
to sixth in the ICC Test rankings,
replaced by arch-rivals Pakistan in
the fifth position after Misbah-ulHaq’s men took a 1-0 lead in the
ongoing series against Australia
here. ‘Pakistan’s victory in the Dubai
Test has not only ensured that it will
move ahead of India in fifth position
irrespective of how the Abu Dhabi
Test ends, it has dashed Australia
hopes of regaining the number-one
Test ranking,’ the ICC said in a
statement. To move ahead of South
Africa, Australia needed to win both
the Tests. Now, their best series
result can be a 1-1 draw, which will
keep them in second position, three
points behind South Africa.
In contrast, if Pakistan win the
second Test, then they will leapfrog
England, Sri Lanka and India into
third position.
Madrid, Oct 27 (AFP):
Sevilla moved joint top of La Liga
alongside Barcelona as two late
goals from Denis Suarez and Carlos
Bacca gave them a 2-1 win over
Villarreal.
Champions Atletico Madrid also
moved to within two pointes of the
leaders as they were 1-0 victors
at 10-man Getafe thanks to Mario
Mandzukic’s first-half goal yesterday.
Villarreal seemed set to take all
three points when substitute Luciano
Vietto clipped home Cani’s pass to
open the scoring 11 minutes from
time.
However, Suarez slotted home a
loose ball inside the area two minutes
from time and Bacca converted from
the penalty spot deep into stoppage
time after Giovani Dos Santos had
upended Benoit Tremoulinas.
Victories for Sevilla and Atletico
leaves the top five separated by
just two points. Villarreal enjoyed
the better of the play in the first
period at the Sanchez Pizjuan, but
it was Sevilla who came closest to
breaking the deadlock when Gerard
Deulofeu’s corner came back off
the post.
Sevilla ‘keeper Beto was forced
to make a point-blank save from
Ikechukwu Uche just before the
break and the Nigerian striker should
have done better when he fired wide
11 minutes into the second-half.
Uche’s replacement Vietto was
more clinical when handed the
chance to give Villarreal the lead as
he raced onto Cani’s through ball to
lift the ball over the advancing Beto.
However, Villarreal couldn’t
withstand the late waves of Sevilla
pressure as Suarez pounced to hook
the ball into the far corner following a
scramble inside the area.

Misbah hails Pak’s crushing win over Oz
Dubai, Oct 27:
Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq
hailed his side’s first Test victory
over Australia in Dubai on Sunday
as ‘one of the finest wins’ but added
his team needed to remain focused
to win the series. Pakistan thrashed
Australia by 221 runs on the fifth
and final day with just 21.5 overs
remaining in the game. Australia
were dismissed for 216 after left-arm
spinner Zulfiqar Babar took 5 for 74
and leg spinner Yasir Shah finished
with 4 for 50 to give Pakistan a 1-0
lead in the two-Test series. Misbah
said the win was the second best
behind a 3-0 rout of the then world
number one team England in the
United Arab Emirates in 2012.
‘It’s difficult where to rank this win
but it is one of the finest victories,’
said Misbah after the match. ‘I
always rank 3-0 against England
at the top but after that this is a
big achievement, also as captain.
‘We will try to do this again and try
to focus more and are determined
not to be lazy against a team like
Australia who always look for an
opportunity,’ said Misbah.
Pakistan will look to win or avoid
defeat in the second Test, starting
in Abu Dhabi on 30 October, to
seal their first series victory against
Australia since 1994. Misbah said
the win was an achievement in the
context of Pakistan’s 2-0 defeat
in Tests in Sri Lanka and 3-0
humiliation in the preceding one-day
series against Australia.‘Of course,
a victory against any side is always
important in a Test, especially
against Australia and in the context
that we were playing before, the

then we lost the one-days and the

Srinivasan

on WI pullout
Kolkata, Oct 27 (PTI):
ICC chairman N Srinivasan refused

comment on this,’ he told reporters
here when his reaction was sought
on West Indies’ pullout of their India

The BCCI then suspended all
bilateral cricket tours with West
Indies and decided to initiate legal
proceedings against the WICB for
abruptly cancelling the tour, because

Gangrape: Victim
to get compensation
Muzaffarnagar, Oct 27 (PTI):
A compensation of Rs five lakh
has been provided by district
administration to a victim of
gangarape during communal riots
last year, in compliance with a
Supreme Court order, a senior
official said today. District Magistrate
Koshal Raj Sharma said here that on
the direction of state government, Rs
five lakh has been provided to the
victim in a gang rape case in which
the Special Investigation Team (SIT)
had filed an FIR against five accused
at Phugana village.
The development came after the
apex court issued contempt of court
notice against the state government
and directed the SIT officials to
appear before it on a plea by the
victim. The court had ordered in
March this year that compensation
be provided to all rape victims but
the woman was not provided relief
after which she moved the court.

Loss will fire us,
says Clarke
Dubai, Oct 27:
Australia captain Michael Clarke
said his team would be fired up
by defeat in the first Test against
Pakistan but clearly needed to
improve in all facets of the game to
square the series later this week.
The defeat by 221 runs in Dubai
on Sunday was Australia’s second
in five Tests this year, a run
which included the last
victory in their 5-0 home
Ashes triumph and their
2-1 series win in South
Africa. ‘Any time we lose a
game it breeds fire in your
belly, you don’t like losing,’ Clarke
told reporters in Dubai. ‘Australians in
general don’t like losing, so we’ve got
a couple of days to prepare as well as
we can and we’ll look forward to that
second Test match.
‘Pakistan deserve a lot of credit for
the way they played over the full five
days. But we know we can play a lot
better and we look forward to showing
that in the second Test match.’
Clarke said he had been proud of
the defiance Steve Smith (55) and
Mitchell Johnson (61) showed on
the final day, which Australia started
on 59 for 4 chasing 438 for an
improbable victory.
‘I’m obviously very disappointed
with the result but really impressed
by the way Steve Smith and Mitchell
Johnson in particular showed a lot of
grit today,’ he added. ‘They fought
their backsides off and that’s part
of the Australian way, I guess, we
weren’t going to turn up here and
throw our wickets away.
‘We were going to fight really
hard and I think those two played
CM to pay homage
at Thevar memorial
NT Bureau
Chennai, Oct 27:
Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and other Ministers will pay homage at
Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar’s memorial on 30 October, on the occasion
of 52nd Guru Pooja.
According to an official release here, Housing Minister R Vaithilingam,
Cooperatives Minister Sellur K Raju, Food Minister R Kamaraj, Sports and
Youth Development Minister S Sundararaj, Revenue Minister R B Udayakumar
and others will pay homage at the freedom fighter’s memorial.
Four days ahead of the Jayanthi celebrations, the 13-kg gold armour
donated by AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa was fixed to the statue
of Muthuramalinga Thevar at the memorial in Pasumpon on Saturday after
special poojas, giving it a grand look.
The armour donated by Jayalalithaa that was kept in the safety locker of Bank
of India’s Madurai branch, was handed over to Gandhi Meenal, administrator
of the memorial by Panneerselvam on Saturday as the three-day Thevar
Jayanthi celebrations is set to begin from 28 October.
really well in tough conditions.’ That
said, Clarke was clear that a big
improvement was required if Australia
were to get back to winning ways in
the second Test, which starts in Abu
Dhabi on Thursday.
‘We were outplayed in all three
facets of the game, our fielding
wasn’t as good as it needs to be,’
he said. ‘When you lose the toss on
a flat surface, you can’t afford to drop
catches. ‘I think we’ve got to keep trying
to find a way to take wickets, keep
looking at footage of Pakistan players.
I think we can know their players a little
bit better. But it’s about execution, it
doesn’t matter how much information
you have, if you don’t execute, you are
not going to get the rewards.’
Although the result continued
Australia’s struggles on the slow
wickets of the subcontinent, Clarke
was confident the team was a long
way from the shambles of the 4-0
humiliation in India last year.
‘Unfortunately, the result was the
same as India,’ he said. ‘But, as
a team in general, I think we’ve
improved out of sight since that series
for a number of reasons.’

former MD B Rama Raju, ex-CFO Vadlamani Srinivas, former PwC auditors

Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Dull
(Happy New Year)
N
ew year has come on Deepavali for Shahrukh’s fans. Directed by Farah Khan, it is
a mix and match of ‘Hail India’ portions from SRK’s Pardes to Swades to Chak De,
laced with lots of commercial elements.
A shrewd Farah Khan has played it to her strength - dance forms the crux. A revenge
drama where an underdog emerges winner against all odds is what Happy New Year is
all about. High on entertainment but low on content.
As like any other Farah Khan’s film, HNY has a huge star cast, grand sets and
unlimited fun. Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani,
Sonu Sood and Jackie Shroff among others form part of the cast.
Chandermohan Manohar Sharma (Shahrukh Khan) aka Charlie, manages to bring
together a team of friends (Boman
Irani, Abhishek, Sonu Sood, Vivian
Shah) who plan to steal diamonds
from Charan Grover (Jackie
Shroff) who is settled in Dubai. The
diamonds are locked in a safe which
can be opened only by Grover’s son
Vicky (Abhishek Bachchan).
Charlie and his team get the help
of a bar dancer Maya (Deepika
Padukone) to prepare themselves for
World Dance Competition that takes
place in Dubai. Their participation
would mean an opportunity to steal

the diamond. What happens in their
journey and did they accomplish the task
form the rest.
Shahrukh is all through. He is as usual
cool and bubbly. His eight pack abs and
his typical dialogue delivery would go down
well with his fans. Deepika is reduced to a
mere glam doll. Remember she played a
central character in Farah Khan’s last Om
Shanthi Om.
Abhishek Bacchan is the real scene
stealer. He begins from where he left in
Dhoom 3. Adds some funny body language
to his performance, he comes up trumps.
A daring cameo by filmmakers Anurag
Kashyap, Vishal Dadlani and Sajjid Khaan
tickles our funny bone. HNY has some
foot-tapping music, with Nonsense Ki Night
and Indiawalee being the best of them all.
On the flip side, a major portion of the
movie gives a deja vu. Also a bit too long.
Had Farah Khan stepped a little out of her
comfort zone and tried a tad different, the
movie would have lived up to its title.
