MONASH SENIORS LEARN TO CARE FOR THEMSELVES
To follow the theme of the Victorian Seniors Festival ‘Taking Good Care of Yourself, National Seniors
Australia Monash Branch, in conjunction with the Monash Chinese Friendship Association and the Monash
Council will hold a “Positive Ageing Expo” in Mt. Waverley on Tuesday 28th October from 10.30 a.m. to
2.00 p.m.
The Expo will be held at the Mt. Waverley Community Centre, Miller Crescent, Mt Waverley (opposite
the Mt. Waverley station) and will highlight the many ways in which Monash Seniors can improve their
lives through healthy living and a healthy lifestyle.
Stands will feature a broad range of information on health related issues, activities, Council services, and
local organisations.
The Expo is a free event and will feature over 20 displays with staff available to give general health
information and local contacts for Senior residents to stay connected in their local community.
In adjoining rooms, guest speakers will present a variety of health and social subjects and demonstrations of
exercises suitable for Seniors, eg Tai Chi, Zumba and balance and strength. The Chinese Fan Dancers will
be featured throughout the event. Visitors will be invited to join in and learn some of the techniques.
The Expo will also support the work being done by the City of Monash Council towards becoming an “Age
Friendly City”.
Certificate of Appreciation
Danny Ward, President of Monash Branch of National Seniors Australia,
was presented by the Mayor of Monash Geoff Lake with a certificate
thanking the branch for helping to make Monash a happy, healthy, caring
community and recognising the involvement of the branch in the Positive
Ageing Expos during October’s Senior’s month.
Monash Branch at Glen Waverley Expo
Whilst space was very limited, the stand we had at The Glen on Tuesday
14th proved to be very rewarding.
Again many people had not heard of National Seniors and we found
interest was high from the people we spoke to about the National Seniors
organisation. Our bright yellow bags stood out against the royal blue
table covering and contained relevant information about our organisation
and contact details for the Monash Branch.
We also spoke with past Branch attendees and together with interest from shoppers we are hopeful that
branch numbers will be boosted.
If you missed out on the Glen Waverley expo please be sure and visit the Mount Waverley Community
Centre on Tuesday 28th October and support your branch.
Guest Speaker
At the November 5th meeting Alan Gray will talk about the ‘History of the Puffing Billy Railway’ which
should be interesting as we all know of Puffing Billy but have probably never bothered to read about its
beginnings.
