1. yukimi Annand
text and texture: abstract calligraphy
with expressive textures
have a passion for textures, especially textures
found in nature. After years of learning a variety
of Roman letters, I discovered the beauty of
each stroke and the unique textures that result from
writing strokes with rhythm. Recently I am challenging myself to write and draw those textures merging
into Modern Japanese calligraphy* and American
Abstract Expressionism.**
I
In this workshop, we will experience the usage of tools as extensions of our hand. We
will start by creating marks with different writing tools and different objects. Then we
will design alphabets with those new marks to write our chosen texts in various ways.
We'll examine writing speed, pressure, the directions of strokes, and the relationship
between letters. Study of layering, tones, basic design layout and composition, and use of line and space in Japanese calligraphy will be presented for making effective textures. All exercise sheets will be
temporarily bound for further experiments. Directed projects will include
series of art works, an accordion book, and/or 3D art works.
I am looking forward to sharing the moment each of us express our
feeling affectively, deeply, strongly and evocatively into our creation by
writing texts on chosen spaces during the workshop.
yukimi annand
Yukimi studied communication design and worked for ten years as a graphic designer in Tokyo, Japan. She left her position as a director in the prestigious Takenobu
Igarashi Studio to come to the U.S. in 1990. She has been studying calligraphy over ten years, and her works have been exhibited in the U.S., Japan and Europe.
She is discovering her soul in letters and hoping to find her niche as a text artist who combines a love of nature and of letters.

2. ewan clayton
lettering and art nouveau
any innovations in art
and music can be
traced back to Vienna
in the early 1900’s. How did
this period of Art Nouveau affect lettering? In this class we
will explore the contribution to
lettering made by the great pioneers of Art Nouveau (at left)
and their calligraphic champion Rudolf von Larisch. Expect to be surprised by the
variety of styles on offer from
sleek, smooth and sophisticated to fairly primitive. In my
own calligraphy (at right) I
have allowed Art Nouveau to
influence the work rather than
aspired to direct copying - I will
be encouraging you to work
this way yourselves.

Ewan Clayton enjoys working with his fellow calligraphers whatever their level of experience from beginners to experts. He grew up near Ditchling, Sussex,
home to the calligrapher Edward Johnston. An early friendship with Irene Wellington encouraged him to join the course at the Roehampton Institute run by Ann
Camp for whom he then worked as a teaching assistant. Today Ewan is part-time Professor in Design at the University of Sunderland. In the rest of his time he
makes commissions, curates exhibitions and writes about calligraphy. In 2014 his history of lettering ‘The Golden Thread: the story of writing’ – (thank you
Sheila Waters for letting me use your ‘Golden’ phrase in the title!) was published by Counterpoint Press.
3. reggie ezell
carolingian, variations and... fun!
his basic version of Carolingian has everything
to do with directness,
rhythm, and enjoyment.
Twenty-one of the twenty-six
letters are done in a single
stroke. We will generate contemporary versions changing
not only the forms but the
writing implements used to
make them as well.
T
Beginners through advanced
welcome.
reggie ezell
Over the past three decades, Reggie’s year long course “26 Seeds: a Year to Grow” has been among the most highly regarded and sought after in the U.S. and
Canada. For a decade before that he taught calligraphy at Loyola University and the Newberry Library of Chicago. For the last five years his new extended studies
course “PRIMITIVE TO MODERN,” as the title suggests, has been an intense fusion of millennia old materials and techniques; calfskin vellum, gilding, quills, dry pigments, and designs (eg. Codex Aureus) with computer and ink jet generated backgrounds, modernized alphabets, contemporary and innovative designs and techniques. The structure, geared to flexibility, generates finished works based on the student’s preference for structured examples or individual initiative and interest.
These exciting works have been emailed out weekly since 2009 as “Pic of the Week,” all archived on reggieezell.com.
In 2013 he forayed into a new adventure: online instructional videos; free on YouTube and for purchase on a soon to be announced host.
4. ed fong
earn the unique “Tricks of the
Trade” and techniques from Ed
Fong, a Calligrapher for the
City of Los Angeles with more than
30 years of experience. This workshop will provide participants with
the opportunity to explore simple
color gouache accents, drop shadows, gold and silver ink illumination
techniques and his modernized
Zanerian watercolor washes for
subtle to dramatic impact. You will
learn various “media recipes” and
pen nib honing modification to enhance your letterforms. You will
also get to try various tricks including fixing or eliminating errors, debossing, water color gradients and
making custom presentation folders
to showcase your artwork. Both beginners to more advanced calligraphers will gain professional skills to
add texture and colorful accents to
enrich your lettering. Finally, the instructor will demonstrate and share
insights on the use of Photoshop
and digital calligraphy for today’s
calligrapher.

Ed Fong, Los Angeles City Calligrapher for 30 years, began a lifelong passion for lettering at age 11 under the mentorship of his father Roy K. Fong, a student
of William B. Wollman. In addition to his full time position with the City of Los Angeles, Ed maintains a freelance calligraphy business, specializing in formal certificates and retirement resolutions. His calligraphic work is influenced by the engrossing style of the Zanerian College of Penmanship in Columbus, Ohio. Currently, he is exploring the melding of hand lettering and graphic images in Photoshop.

playbooks
he blank page can strike fear in the heart of even the most seasoned artist. But
then, when you add a slash of ink, a splash of colour, or a caressing stroke of
graphite, suddenly the paper starts to join you in a conversation. Working in a
sketchbook and facing that blank page every time you open it can be daunting. It can
dissuade you from the regular routine of practise and play with design and materials
that is so necessary to all artists. In this class we will meet the large, blank page with
enthusiasm, exploring a variety of ways to create interest and intent with mediums and
tools that leave the surface amenable to later layers of lettering and imagery. Then it is
time for our full sheets of paper to be used to create
folded books that already
contain your own creative
touch. I call these books
playbooks, each page already started and alive
with potential and possibility, ready to talk to you
each time you sit down
to engage it with your
writing and drawing
tools.

6. pamela paulsrud
sounding the inner landscape with
handwriting, mark-making and image
n this class you’ll explore the distinctive and bold expressions of spontaneous marks using
walnut and sumi inks, combined with layering of alternative image processes – and while
we’re at it, we’ll explore and extrapolate your handwriting too. We’ll mix in personal
ephemera through transfers (your originals won’t be harmed) culminating in a folded, wrapped
and stitched accordion book.
I
In this 3 ½ days you’ll be given the guidance in scoring countless variations of rhythmical marks and patters originating from intuition and
response to music – or silence. This class will help you loosen any
rigid body postures and sidestep predictable outcomes. Sink art
techniques will also be introduced for creating blurring, dripping and
running marks for breathtaking texturing effects on your papers.
After some critique sessions, editing and cropping exercises, we’ll move beyond the mark into image Xerox
transfers. From here you’ll begin to work with your
own personal ephemera to create an array of words
and images, that might reflect, interact with or interpolate your mark making influences – culminating in
a book that provides an intuitive story telling piece – unfolding with
layered marks, handwriting and images into a dimensional accordion book.

7. robbie saslow
sleek, steady and slanted: italic
hen people think of calligraphy, italic lettering
usually comes to mind.
It is lovely and flowing, airy and
open…just like the Italian landscape it gets its name from. It is
also remarkably useful and versatile, making it an essential
style in any calligrapher's repertoire. With special attention
given to the delicate construction of these beautiful letterforms, and lots of personalized
attention, this class is perfect for
anyone new to italic lettering or
in need of a brush-up.

journey into contemporary
pointed pen scripts
ur journey will start with the fundamentals of the pointed
pen scripts developed by master calligrapher Michael
Kecseg of Chicago. His pointed pen variations are
based on the copperplate and italic hands. Besides adapting
other hands to the pointed pen, such as uncial, roman, gothic
and foundational, we will explore other contemporary styles,
such as decorative and novelty letterforms and some typefaces.
Knowledge of the use of a pointed pen and copperplate style
are recommended.

and develop your drawing skills, and guide you
through analyzing the anatomy of letterforms.
L
Addressing color and light, dimension, perspective and depth are part of the creative journey that will begin with monoline., transforming
and redrawing letters with fresh insight.
The whimsey is the icing on the cake, the
touch of imagination that merge new combinations of imagery.

10. peter thornton
decorated versal letters
his workshop will be an extension of the
first Adolf Bernd workshop and will
begin with a gentle review of several of the color and tonal exercises in
both 'harmony' and 'contrasts.'
T
We shall then focus on the greater
tonal subtlety as seen in his work with
exercises using natural objects as he did
himself. Also there will be exercises that
explore the rich reservoir of the many
subtleties found in neutrals and greys,
both warm, cool and inert that will give us a more
sustained sense of beauty and satisfaction.
A feature in this workshop on the second and
third day will be to work on the drawn and the spontaneously drawn Versal letters or similar Built-Up letters adding some of the subtle colours of our own choices
and preferences and to produce these small beautiful Decorative letters as shown here, as a memento of a family/friends
reunion.
