A Recognized Research Leader
For more than 130 years, research and innovation have been fundamental to the
mission of Saint Luke’s Hospital and Saint Luke’s Health System. In fact, many
of our research activities, especially in cardiovascular disease and neurology, have
earned national and international acclaim.
But our commitment to research extends into many additional disciplines
throughout our organization. Nearly 350 active investigators were involved in
434 active studies in 2013.
The quality and quantity of this research demonstrates why many of the nation’s
leading clinicians choose to be part of the Saint Luke’s team. This report
summarizes their impressive work for 2013.
One of the ways Saint Luke’s supports the work of our researchers is through
the Central Office of Research Administration (CORA). CORA facilitates
investigator-initiated and sponsored trials. CORA also provides assistance in
the proper conduct of research and research compliance, helping to ensure the
research conducted at Saint Luke’s Health System always meets the highest
standards. CORA’s support is vital to the success of our research efforts.

Saint Luke’s research enterprise and is the foundation

research program encompasses centers of excellence

research, health economics and technology assessment,

laboratories for a wide range of studies that often
involve collaboration with leading cardiovascular
centers and researchers from around the world.

2013 Highlights
An Unprecedented ‘Triple Play’
Three highly prestigious journals in one week
The three most important general medical journals in
the world are the New England Journal of Medicine, the
Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA),
and The Lancet. Although most researchers would be
thrilled to publish a paper in one of these major journals
during their careers, in 2013, the cardiovascular
research program at MAHI was fortunate to have
three papers published during a single week – one
in each of these highly prestigious journals. Paul
Chan, M.D.,* directed a study investigating long-term
outcomes among patients who survive an episode of
in-hospital cardiac arrest that was published in the New
England Journal of Medicine. Adnan Chhatriwalla,
M.D., and Steven Marso, M.D., conducted a
study of more than 1 million patients undergoing
percutaneous coronary revascularization that explored
the contribution of post-procedural bleeding to
subsequent in-hospital mortality that was published in
JAMA. And concurrently, Randall Thompson, M.D.,
directed an important study exploring the origins of
atherosclerosis in early humans based on findings from
CT scans of mummies collected from around the globe,
the results of which were published in The Lancet. The
simultaneous publication of these three studies, each
led by MAHI investigators is testimony to the
breadth, depth, and worldwide recognition of the
quality of the science being led by our talented
investigators.
MAHI Receives Highly Competitive PCORI
Grants
MAHI investigators were honored to receive a
number of grants to support a broad range of new
research efforts in 2013. Two of these grants were
awarded to the Cardiovascular Outcomes Research
Group and its investigators by the Patient-Centered
Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)—a
federally funded program designed to help people
make informed health care decisions, and to
improve health care delivery and outcomes, by
producing and promoting high integrity, evidencebased information that comes from research guided

by patients, caregivers, and the broader health care
community.
One PCORI grant, PORTRAIT, is being codirected by Kim Smolderen, Ph.D., and John
Spertus, M.D., and will investigate trajectories of
clinical and patient-reported outcomes among
individuals with peripheral artery disease. The
second PCORI-funded project is being co-directed
by Dr. Chhatriwalla and Dr. Spertus and will
investigate the ability of a nurse-led educational
intervention to allow patients to make more
informed and patient-centered decisions around
percutaneous coronary revascularization. Each of
these grants was for approximately $1.5 million and
will support a range of interconnected projects over a
three-year period.
In addition to the PCORI grants, Aaron Grantham,
M.D., was awarded a $3.5 million grant by Boston
Scientific to develop and lead a multicenter
registry of patients undergoing percutaneous
coronary intervention of chronically occluded
vessels. This study, known as OPEN-CTO, will
involve many other investigators at MAHI and will seek
to improve our understanding of the short- and longterm clinical, quality of life, and economic outcomes
of some of the newest technical advances in the
performance of this highly specialized procedure.
Selected MAHI Research Programs
Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgical Research
Under the direction of Keith Allen, M.D., and
colleagues, the Department of Cardiovascular and
Thoracic Surgery continues
to maintain an active portfolio
of research with participation
in nine FDA clinical trials
during 2013. Dr. Allen led
a number of research
studies in preventing wound
complications and enhancing
sternotomy healing following
cardiac surgery. One study
involving more than 7,000

cardiac surgical patients
published in JAMA evaluated
the effect of an investigational vaccine for preventing
Staphylococcus aureus infections in patients undergoing
elective cardiac surgery. Within this theme, Dr. Allen
is serving as national principal investigator for a
multicenter trial evaluating the safety and efficacy
of rigid sternal fixation versus wire cerclage during
sternotomy closure.
Research involving the surgical treatment of heart failure
with cardiac transplantation or mechanical circulatory
support continues to grow under the leadership of
Michael Borkon, M.D., chairman of the Department
of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and director of
cardiac transplantation, and Sanjeev Aggarwal, M.D.,
director of mechanical and circulatory support.
Dr. Aggarwal was leading enroller in the United
States in Sunshine Heart’s C-Pulse trial, which
successfully evaluated a novel extravascular counter
pulsation device placed minimally invasively around
the ascending aorta to treat patients with class III/
IV heart failure. Further studies of this device
are planned for the coming years and, if successful,
should pave the way for this novel treatment to expand
treatment options for patients with advanced heart
failure who do not require full circulatory support.
Interventional Cardiology
In addition to participating in multicenter clinical trials,
interventional cardiologists at MAHI continue to lead
a number of investigator-initiated research studies.
David Safley, M.D., has been active in studying
the evolving technique of transradial percutaneous
coronary intervention (PCI). During the past year,
along with colleagues from MAHI and several other
programs, he led a study to examine the costs of
transradial PCI as compared with transfemoral
procedures, the results of which were published in
the American Heart Journal. Another area of research
interest for Dr. Safley is quality of life in patients with
peripheral arterial disease. Along with colleagues
from the MAHI Health Economics and Technology
Assessment Group, he led a study to evaluate health
outcomes of more than 200 patients undergoing
superficial femoral artery (SFA) stenting as part of
the industry-sponsored STROLL trial. These results,
which were recently presented as a late-breaking
clinical trial at the Vascular Interventional Advances
(VIVA) meeting, were the first to demonstrate that
the early benefits of SFA stenting are largely
maintained over at least three years of follow-up.
Dmitri Baklanov, M.D., is a MAHI interventional
cardiologist and clinical scholar who is one of the
leading experts in the technique of transradial
catheterization and PCI. In addition to leading a
number of courses on this technique, Dr. Baklanov
continues to publish extensively on clinical and
economic outcomes of transradial PCI. In a
landmark study published in the Journal of the
American College of Cardiology (JACC), Dr. Baklanov
and colleagues found that although transradial PCI
is utilized in only a minority of patients undergoing
primary PCI for STEMI, its use is associated with
substantial reductions in both bleeding as well as
mortality. In addition, using data from the National
Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR), he found that
the combination of transradial PCI and bivalirudin
anticoagulation result in the lowest bleeding

outcomes across the full spectrum of patient risk.
The results of this study were published in Circulation:
Cardiovascular Interventions.
Adnan Chhatriwalla, M.D., is another MAHI
interventional cardiologist with a growing research
portfolio, focused primarily on
the application of evidencebased practice in the cardiac
catheterization laboratory.
In 2013, Dr. Chhatriwalla
and colleagues published two
important studies evaluating
bleeding complications
following percutaneous
coronary intervention (PCI).
In a study published in the
Adnan Chhatriwalla, M.D.
Journal of the American Medical
Association (JAMA), he found
that 12.1 percent of in-hospital deaths following PCI
in the United States can be attributed to bleeding
complications, and that non-access site bleeding
impacts mortality more substantially than
access-site bleeding. In a second study published
in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology
(JACC), they reported that the use of individualized
bleeding risk estimates for patients undergoing PCI
at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute was
associated with increased use of bivalirudin in
high-risk patients and a dramatic reduction
in the incidence of bleeding complications.
Finally, as described on p. 6, Dr. Chhatriwalla and
Dr. Spertus recently received a three-year research
award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research
Institute (PCORI) to create and test a decision aid to
educate patients about drug-eluting and bare-metal

stents and support shared decision-making with respect
to stent selection at the time of PCI.
Cardiovascular Outcomes Research
Under the joint direction of John Spertus, M.D.,
M.P.H., and Carole Decker, R.N., Ph.D., FAHA,
CPHQ, the MAHI Outcomes Research program
continues to rank as one of the leading programs
in cardiovascular outcomes research in the
world. In 2013, Dr. Spertus and his team published
more than 65 peer-reviewed articles on the quality
of care and outcomes of patients with cardiovascular
disease. Beyond their ongoing efforts to promote the
importance of 1) patient-reported outcomes as a means
to better integrate patients’ symptoms, 2) function and
quality of life as outcomes in clinical trials, 3) quality
assessment and shared decision-making, their research
has recently focused on the development of an
infrastructure to support personalized medicine.
A nine-center study* in the setting of angioplasty was
able to support the execution of multivariable risk
models from the American College of Cardiology into
the flow of routine patient care. This study established
that this personalized approach improved
patients’ experiences with care, tailored treatment
with bleeding avoidance strategies to those who
most benefit, reduced bleeding complications
and enabled more efficient care with reduced
costs. In collaboration with investigators from Saint
Luke’s Marion Bloch Neuroscience Institute and the
University of California-Los Angeles, this methodology is
currently being extended to the treatment of acute
ischemic stroke, a historically undertreated condition.
Dr. Spertus, the Daniel J. Lauer/ University of Missouri
Endowed Chair in Metabolism and Vascular Research at

Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, continues to lead an
NIH/NHLBI-funded training grant in outcomes research
and has collaborated with numerous faculty and trainees
throughout the country. The project is in collaboration
with University of Missouri – Kansas City. He continues
to serve as the deputy editor of Circulation: Quality of Care
and Outcomes. In recognition of his long-standing
commitment to the field, Dr. Spertus was awarded
the American Heart Association’s Distinguished
Achievement Award by the Quality of Care and
Outcomes Research Council. This award, given only once
every three years, recognizes excellence in scholarship,
mentorship, and significant contributions to the field.
Noted MAHI Investigators
Health Economics and Technology Assessment
(HETA)
Under the joint direction of David Cohen, M.D.,
director of cardiovascular research, and Elizabeth
Magnuson, Sc.D., the MAHI HETA group continues to
provide leadership to a large number of multicenter
studies designed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of
novel cardiovascular technologies. During the past
year, the HETA group has focused on several clinical trials
evaluating alternative approaches to revascularization of
patients with complex multivessel coronary disease. One
such study was the FREEDOM* trial, a NIH-sponsored
clinical trial of PCI versus bypass surgery for patients
with diabetes and multivessel coronary disease and
demonstrated that bypass surgery led to improved longterm outcomes. The economic analysis led by the HETA
group demonstrated that bypass surgery was also a
highly cost-effective treatment for these patients.
These findings, which were published in Circulation,
serve to reinforce and strengthen current guidelines
that recommend bypass surgery as first-line therapy
for diabetic patients with multivessel coronary disease.
The quality of life component of the FREEDOM trial
was recently published in JAMA and demonstrated that
bypass surgery also led to improved quality of life
outcomes compared with PCI—particularly over the first
several years of follow-up.
In addition, the MAHI HETA group continues to
maintain an active portfolio of more than a dozen
health economic studies carried out alongside pivotal
NIH and private industry-sponsored clinical trials relating
to treatments for ischemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation,
valve disease, acute stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.
• Randall Thompson, M.D., conducted one of the more
unusual ongoing research projects at MAHI involving
the use of CT scanning to study heart and vascular
disease in the remains of ancient humans. CT
scans of mummies spanning more than 4,000 years from wide regions of the globe refute the thought that atherosclerosis is a disease caused by modern lifestyles. Dr. Thompson and his team recently published their findings in The Lancet. This project created intense
worldwide media interest including thousands of
newspapers, television and radio programs, as well as
periodicals such as Popular Science and Science Magazine. This unique work may ultimately help find missing risk factors and causes for this most common of diseases.
Over the next 12 months, the HETA group will be
completing a number of long-running studies including
studies investigating the cost-effectiveness of PCI versus
bypass surgery for patients with three-vessel and left
main disease (as part of the SYNTAX trial), renal artery
stenting versus optimal medical therapy for patients with
atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (as part of the NIHsponsored CORAL* trial), and the novel anticoagulant
edoxaban versus warfarin for patients with atrial fibrillation
(as part of the ENGAGE-TIMI 48 trial).
• Suzanne Arnold, M.D., M.H.A., led a number of studies looking at quality of life in patients with
valvular heart disease, focusing specifically on patients with aortic stenosis considering transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) – a novel form of valve replacement. Along with Dr. Cohen, she has recently
developed and validated a statistical model to
identify patients who are at high risk for doing poorly with this new procedure. The information learned could help patients and their families make more * Refer to page 59

Paul Chan,* M.D., M.Sc., completed the most comprehensive and representative study of in-
hospital cardiac arrest survivors to date. Results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study found that the three-year survival rate of cardiac arrest survivors was similar to that of patients with heart
failure, dispelling pessimistic attitudes on the life-
expectancy of survivors of in-hospital cardiac arrest. For this and his other recent seminal studies in cardiac arrest care, Dr. Chan was named the 2013 American Heart Association Dickinson W. Richards Memorial Lecturer on Resuscitation Science.
Sanjaya Gupta, M.D., is a cardiac electrophysiologist whose research program focuses on outcomes research
in patients with heart rhythm disorders. One of his current research interests is the intersection of cardiac electrophysiology and sleep apnea, which has led to the development of a novel method of
screening for sleep apnea in patients with
implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD). Based on analysis of more than 300 ICD recordings, Dr. Gupta and colleagues have developed an algorithm for prediction
of sleep apnea based upon patients with previously
diagnosed sleep apnea. The results of this study were
presented at the most recent Scientific Session of the
Heart Rhythm Society and are currently being
validated prospectively by enrolling patients in a prospective trial (NASSA-ICD) utilizing data collected
from ICDs during sleep studies in patients with undiagnosed sleep apnea. 2013 Research Annual Repor t // Central Office of Research Administration

informed treatment decisions. The results of this study were presented at the annual scientific sessions of the American College of Cardiology.
• Mikhail Kosiborod, M.D., continues to advance the field of cardiometabolism, and led a number of
impactful research studies in 2013.
Along with Suzanne Arnold,
M.D., M.H.A., he served as lead
author of the TERISA study, a
multi-national randomized clinical trial that evaluated the effectiveness
of ranolazine in reducing angina
among patients with Type 2 diabetes
and chronic stable coronary artery
disease. The results of the study were
presented as a late-breaking clinical

trial at the American College of
Cardiology Congress in March and subsequently published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).
Dr. Kosiborod is also a pioneer in developing our understanding of the role of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology in the management of
critically ill patients undergoing cardiac surgery. As principal investigator of an industry-sponsored study for its newly developed CGM system, Sentrino, Saint Luke’s MAHI was the first institution worldwide to study this device in patients after cardiac surgery. It was also the first time CGM was evaluated in patients
undergoing cardiac transplantation. The results
of this study were presented at the International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine in Brussels, Belgium, in March 2013.

James H. O’Keefe, M.D., continues to publish extensively in the areas of cardiovascular prevention, health and nutrition. Most recently, he has been focused on understanding the potential cardiovascular dangers of chronic excess endurance exercise – a syndrome termed “cardiac
overuse injury.” In collaborative projects with experts
from around the world involving tens of thousands of people followed for decades, he has found moderate intensity exercise is among the very best thing one can do for long-term cardiovascular health and longevity; excess exercise when done over years to
decades can predispose to heart problems over time. Several of Dr. O’Keefe’s widely cited papers this year deal with the CV benefits of coffee and tea, the importance of
fatty liver disease as a potent reversible CV risk factor, and a meta-analysis showing that the over-the-counter supplement L-carnitine improves prognosis after MI.
Lipid Diabetes Research
Center (LDRC)
Inflammation is now considered
an integral component of
atherothrombosis, leading to heart
attack, stroke, and peripheral
artery disease, especially in high
risk individuals, such as with
hypertension, smoking, elevated
cholesterol, and especially
diabetes.Yet to date no clinical trial
has been completed to determine
whether inhibiting inflammation
may reduce cardiovascular events.

The Lipid Diabetes Research
Center (LDRC) is involved in
two new multicenter trials trying to answer this question.
One is the CANTOS trial, utilizing canakinumab, a
human monoclonal antibody that neutralizes the bioactivity
of interleukin-1 beta, a primary cytokine promoting
inflammation. In addition to the standard medications
given post-myocardial infarction, quarterly canakinumab
subcutaneous injections will be given to patients with
continued elevation of inflammatory markers after MI. The
trial will enroll 17,000 patients worldwide in 1,400 study
centers with the goal to prevent recurrent cardiovascular
events.
The second trial is CIRT* (Cardiovascular Inflammation
Reduction Trial), funded by the NIH. This trial takes a
different approach than CANTOS—directly testing an
approved anti-inflammatory drug, methotrexate, given in
low dose, 15-20 mg orally once a week. Seven thousand
patients in the United States and Canada will be enrolled
in this multicenter trial with the goal of reducing recurrent
myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with a previous
MI or at high risk of a future cardiovascular event.
In addition to these novel studies of inflammation, the LDRC
continues to be involved in a large number of other studies
involving patients with hypertension, gout, obesity, and
several diabetes trials. One unique trial involves the use of a
tiny titanium metal tube placed under the skin to release a
long-acting form of the drug, exanatide, in order to improve
glucose control.
The LDRC added a new investigator this year, Fredric
Regenstein, M.D., a hepatologist, who is interested in testing
new approaches to treat hepatitis C.

works with the KCCOP leadership staff, member

2013 Highlights

o provide greater responsiveness for cancer
patients and physician investigators and to support
growing study enrollment, SLCI expanded
research nurse coverage to full time at Saint Luke’s
East Hospital. This helps SLCI ensure the clinical
research team is active in identifying whether a research
trial is a good option for each patient.
•The Saint Luke’s Cord Blood Program has
collected 8,300 total units since the program’s
inception in 2008. This program serves as a
worldwide resource for children and adults who
need a stem cell transplant. Through 2013, 10 of
these units have been transplanted into patients with
acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome,
and Fanconi’s anemia.
• Saint Luke’s Cell Processing Laboratory
continued processing blood samples for research
protocols, processed cells for a clinical stem
cell protocol for critical limb ischemia, and
submitted its first grant application for the
study of cord blood biopreservation.
• Timothy J. Pluard, M.D., joined SLCI in 2013 as both medical director and practicing clinician.
Dr. Pluard aims to elevate the Cancer Institute regionally and nationally, and aggressively pursue
research opportunities and clinical trials. Prior to joining Saint Luke’s, he was institutional principal investigator for the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has recognized Dr. Pluard among the national top accruers in cooperative group trials.

Neuroscience Institute opened with
88,000 square feet on six floors. It

The four neurosurgical suites and

Later in the year, the fourth floor
opened, adding an additional 20
private rooms.
The new facility has helped attract
subspecialty-trained physicians and
nurses to the Neuroscience Institute. Work is underway
to establish a neurocritical care service.
Clinical and translational research are part of each
Neuroscience Institute program. Many clinicians are
publishing sponsored or original research in peerreviewed journals and presenting on the national stage
at professional society meetings.

aint Luke’s was honored to receive a very
generous $12 million gift from the Marion
and Henry Bloch Family Foundation to
support neuroscience programs and outcomes
research. The gift, the single largest ever received by
Saint Luke’s, will support expanded programming
for Saint Luke’s Marion Bloch Neuroscience
Institute, whose performance in neurology and
neurosurgery was recently recognized by U.S. News
& World Report, and for Saint Luke’s internationally

The Ear Institute had the highest enrollment among 10 clinical sites in the United States for the study “Evaluation of the Nucleus Hybrid L24 Cochlear Implant System.” This device was submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a pre-market approval in 2013, and one of our subjects was asked to participate at the FDA panel. In November 2013, the FDA
Advisory Committee met and unanimously agreed
the device was safe and effective, and benefits outweighed risks.
• I n a related study, the 10 subjects who were
enrolled in the L24 Study have been able to
benefit from the advanced features of one
of the new cochlear implant processors, the
Cochlear America’s Nucleus 6 System. In a study
entitled, “Evaluation of the Nucleus® Hybrid™
L24 Cochlear Implant System, IDE Supplement:
Investigation of Nucleus 6 Sound Processor Signal
Processing Algorithms,” subjects can use the new
processor for a one month period. The subjects
are tested with their old processor and the new
processor initially, and then complete further
testing and questionnaires about the benefits they
receive after one month. At the conclusion, they
continue use of the new processor.

ar Institute audiologists have designed an
investigator-initiated trial, “Optimal Hearing
Aid Parameters for Maximizing Performance in
Bimodal Cochlear Implant Users,” to determine
the best way to program a hearing aid with
a cochlear implant to make sound more
balanced. Many patients with cochlear implants
can benefit from a hearing aid in their contralateral
ears, giving them “bimodal” hearing and better
ability to hear in noise and to know the location of
sound. The results of this study will ensure patients
reach their maximum hearing potential.

his investigator-initiated study, “The Role of
EarlyCDT®-Lung in the Management of
Pulmonary Nodules,” with co-investigators from the Departments of Radiology, Pulmonary Medicine, and Cardiology. This innovative study is evaluating
and correlating human autoantibodies
targeting lung cancer with pulmonary nodules found on computed tomography (CT) scans with a simple blood test called EarlyCDT®-
Lung. This blood test has the potential to distinguish benign from malignant pulmonary nodules. There
are 117 patients currently enrolled. The study is
funded by Health Diagnostic Laboratory Inc. (formerly Oncimmune), the Kansas Bioscience Authority, and Saint Luke’s Foundation.

In Dr. Borsa’s research, CT is being used to
evaluate the tilt of IVC filters. IVC filter tilt may have implications in filter efficacy as well as filter retrieval.

With the completion of enrolled-patient follow-up,
Interventional Radiology’s role in the ATTRACT*
(Acute Venous Thrombus Removal with Adjunctive Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis) study led by Dr. Wible will come to a close. The NIH-funded, Phase III, multicenter clinical trial was designed to compare post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), quality-of-life, cost-effectiveness, and safety
of pharmacomechanical catheter-directed thrombolysis (PCDT) versus conventional therapy for treatment of DVT.
• Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City is the only hospital in the Kansas City region that employs radiologists with expertise in dedicated interpretation of thoracic imaging. Radiologist subspecialists, recognized at national and international levels, are utilizing two to three decades of imaging expertise to lead the multidisciplinary team of lung cancer experts in the 2013-initiated Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City Lung Cancer Screening Program. Patients screened in this program receive low-dose chest CT scans and the advantage of diagnostic and treatment expertise from a host of medical specialists at Saint Luke’s.
Two interventional radiologists, Brandt C.
Wible, M.D., and John Borsa, M.D., FRCPC, are leading three investigator-initiated studies. Each research project focuses on inferior vena cava (IVC) filters.
• Dr. Wible’s first study is comparing filter removal success rates for two IVC filters
commonly used throughout Kansas City, with a goal of better understanding IVC filter designs to
aid with filter placement decisions. His second study strives to improve IVC filter retrieval rates in general by changing filter-placement and follow-up patient-scheduling practice patterns.

team of physicians and health care professionals, the
center offers access to advanced treatment modalities,
including the opportunity to participate in clinical
research trials.
2013 HIGHLIGHTS
Hepatology & Liver Transplantation
The Liver Transplant Program received endorsement
of the team’s expertise by achieving certification
by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
(CMS). CMS certification status enables Saint Luke’s
to augment the exceptional care provided to patients
with end-stage liver disease through its comprehensive
program.
Saint Luke’s liver specialists and cardiologists
have discovered a compelling association
between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
(NAFLD) and a high risk for cardiovascular
disease. Remarkable findings resulted from a
research study led by Liver Disease Management
Center gastroenterologists John Helzberg, M.D.,
and Rajiv Chhabra, M.D., with collaboration from
Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute cardiologists
James O’Keefe, M.D., and Randall Thompson, M.D.
The research findings were published in Mayo Clinic
Proceedings.

with chronic hepatitis C and chronic liver

Vascular Access
Christie Gooden, M.D., transplant surgeon,
led a team evaluating a novel technique for
performing dialysis access grafts. The new
technique in the HeRO project allowed for dialysis
access grafts to be used sooner, decreasing the length
of time patients relied on catheters for dialysis and the
potential risk of infection. The findings were published
in The Scientific World Journal. Saint Luke’s is currently
the only center in the metropolitan region
performing HeRO grafts.
Renal Transplantation

Therapeutic Endoscopy
Saint Luke’s was selected as one of 12 U.S. research
sites to participate in a clinical trial evaluating a novel
endoscopic suturing device for the treatment of
obesity. The study, which will begin enrolling patients
in 2014, will be led by principal investigator Sreeni
Jonnalagadda, M.D., FASGE, section chief of
gastroenterology at Saint Luke’s.

The Unit-Based Nursing Research (UBR) Program
enables a team of staff nurses to collaborate on a
research project with the help of a team leader and
a research mentor. Each research team formulates
a researchable question by consensus, designs a
research project, and disseminates the results. This
program has increased the accessibility of research to
the bedside nurse.
Nursing Research Clinical Scholar Program
Initiated in 2012, the Nursing Research Clinical
Scholar (NRCS) Program continued to gain
momentum in 2013. This program is designed
for staff nurses who want to conduct investigatorinitiated clinical research. The NRCS program
provides multiple opportunities for a select group
of nurses to engage in scholarly research activities,
including development and implementation of a
research project.
Funds donated to Saint Luke’s Foundation provide
financial support that enabled the clinical scholars
to participate in nursing research activities. One of
the clinical scholars, Katie Jaschke, presented her

UMKC medical residents recognized for research achievements at regional and local levels
The academic Department of Anesthesiology at the
University of Missouri–Kansas City has grown to more
than 60 clinical faculty at three institutions (Saint Luke’s
Hospital of Kansas City, Truman Medical Center, and
Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics), in addition
to five research faculty located at the University of
Missouri–Kansas City School of Medicine and Kansas
City University of Medicine and Bioscience.
Research and scholarly activity are requirements of
the anesthesiology residency review committee of the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
(ACGME). Exploration of new knowledge keeps the
faculty on the leading edge of new advances, stimulates
inquiry, and promotes quality patient care. It is also an
important educational tool for residents’ learning and
for their academic development.

Research enhances comprehensive perinatal and neonatal services
Saint Luke’s Health System delivers more babies than
any other health system in Kansas City, and its flagship,
Saint Luke’s Hospital, has delivered babies for more
than a century. Saint Luke’s Hospital’s maternal fetal
medicine offers the area’s highest level of perinatal care
for expectant moms who are considered high-risk and
a level IIIb NICU, which promotes best outcomes for
tiny babies.

Study Registry for Severe Retinopathy and
Treatment on Visual Outcomes of Premature
Neonates
Several recent studies have generated significant
concern about how to best prevent retinopathy of
prematurity (ROP), and how to best treat severe ROP
when it develops. This study’s purpose is to monitor
the influence of the prescribed care on outcomes and
determine what factors influence the visual outcomes
This national study concluded enrollment at the end
of 2013. The research project explored the question of
whether to remove a cerclage after premature preterm
rupture of membranes (PPROM). This question is one
of the unresolved controversies in obstetrics because
few studies are available or have conflicting results. The
combination of PPROM in a patient with cerclage in
place is a rare complication, making it difficult to study
in medical centers not staffed by perinatologists.

Clinical Pastoral Education Advanced Ministry
Saint Luke’s Health System’s Clinical Pastoral
Education Program requires its chaplain residents
to conduct a research project addressing a particular
health and spirituality subject. These projects offer a
theologically informed spiritual care strategy for the
care of patients, family, and staff directly affected by
a particular health-related subject, such as trauma,
stroke, heart conditions, palliative care, cancer, or
ethical issues.
In 2013, Chaplain Residents Kristin Austin, Phyllis
Flory, Tim Maguffee, and Judy Sneegas completed
a research study exploring how nurses’
perceptions of the chaplain’s role impact the
integration of chaplain services and other
Spiritual Wellness resources into patient,
family, and staff care. The study identified a gap
between nurses’ perception of the role of chaplain
and how chaplains perceive their role as health care
professionals. The study had three recommendations:
• T
he Spiritual Wellness Department should provide
continuing education to all members of patient care
teams about when, why, and how to make referrals to
chaplains.
• Chaplains should be integrated into patient care
teams, including attending rounds, discharge
planning, team meetings, etc. Chaplains should
be intentional about developing relationships with
nursing staff.
• T
he Spiritual Wellness Department should provide
online resources that address nurses’ issues of
concern, such as spiritual resources related to
different faith traditions.

Institutional Review Board
Group protects human subjects from undue risk during investigations
The Saint Luke’s Hospital Institutional Review Board
(IRB) reviews research involving human subjects.
Its goals are protecting human subjects from undue
risk during the course of scientific investigations and
fulfilling requirements of federal regulations governing
such research. IRB meetings occur twice monthly
January through October and once monthly in
November and December.
Saint Luke’s IRB—Very Responsive
The Saint Luke’s Hospital IRB is known for being
very responsive and for its prompt turnaround.
Submission deadlines for IRB meetings are typically
three weeks prior to each meeting. This amount of time
allows for processing of the studies in the IRB office,
distribution of information to IRB members, and
review by members prior to the meetings. Following
IRB meetings, correspondence regarding status of IRB
review is normally completed within a few days.
Pharmaceutical and medical device companies often
comment on the efficiency of Saint Luke’s IRB and
the four-week turnaround of IRB decisions, which is
almost unheard of in the research industry.
The IRB is composed of individuals devoted to
assuring the ethical conduct of research within
Saint Luke’s Health System.

Saint Luke’s Hospital 2013 Research Day, held May 3,
showcased a variety of projects, including:

The purpose of Research Day is to showcase studies
conducted by medical residents and fellows, along
