The HOKnows G A Message from your Director We are into the last quarter of 2014 and although the riding season is winding down there are still lots of GKC HOG events planned for October. Blue Springs Harley-Davidson will be hosting the factory 2015 demo fleet on October 3 & 4 so come on out and give the new HOGS a try. Woody Simpson will be leading a ride on Saturday the 4th down to the American Royal BBQ that should be fun. There are dinner rides planned on Oct. 6th to Cascone’s Italian Eatery in North KC and again on the 20th to Clancy’s Bar & Grill in Blue Springs. At the end of the month Woody Simpson will be leading his annual Fall Foliage Ride on October 25-26th. Be sure to attend the October monthly meeting on the 21st to renew your local chapter membership, hear about GKC Officer Elections in November and plans for our annual Christmas Party in December. Remember to turn in last year’s membership card with your yearly mileage on the back to get credit for the miles your rode. If you managed to ride 5,000 miles or more since last October you have earned your GKC Hard Butt Patch and a rocker with the actual miles ridden on it. Local Membership dues are still only $16 for a full member and $8 for an associate member. You ask what do I get in return for that money? Well besides getting to hang out with a bunch of great folks, you can win money just for attending the meetings, earn Polar Bear, Slacker, Paycheck Posse, Storm Trooper, Bug Spot, and Hard Butt patches for riding in various rides Chapter Officers 2014 Director Jeff Blystone Assistant Director Chad Schmidt Secretary Debbie Blackman Treasurer Craig Both Activities Officer Dennis Hayes Membership Secretary/ Remembrance Kim Blystone Ladies of Harley Rhonda Hayes The Greater Kansas City H.O.G. Chapter October 2014 throughout the season, attend a progressive brunch, picnic, fall party, Christmas party and participate in the organized rides that the officers plan and lead several times each month! The local dues you pay don’t begin to pay for all of these benefits and that’s why we owe a big thanks to Blue Springs HarleyDavidson and the owner David Worth. All David ever asks of us is to occasionally volunteer to help out with events at the dealership and ride those Harleys to have fun! What a deal! This year, we tried something a little different and held it at the "Family Golf Park", on 40 Hwy. A beautiful day, with sunshine and a temperature of 73 degrees, brought out a great crowd of 69 people. It's that time a year to renew your GKC Membership. Think back over the last year - did you get to enjoy some great riding, become a slacker, or maybe earn a paycheck posse patch. Did you keep up with fellow GKC friends, maybe make some new friends. All these great memory making opportunities were more than likely caught and shared with other GKC friends on Shutterfly and Facebook. I’m sure you heard about all our great upcoming events from the newsletter, Facebook and events at a glance emails. Maybe you even got to enjoy an impromptu ride because you saw a notice last minute via email. Even the non-riding events bring back great memories - like the picnic, Dinner Drives in the winter months and even dressing up for that once a year special event the Holiday Party. I can't wait to have another awesome year so my vote is in I want to keep the fun rolling into the upcoming year and I hope you will join me by renewing your membership with the chapter. It's simple to renew starting in October come by the store and see Tammy or better yet, come to the October meeting and we will be all set to help you renew. All you will need is $16 for a full membership and if you have a riding partner the associate membership for them is only $8 dollars. There is only one catch to getting all of this fun to continue and that is you must have an active National Hog membership/associate membership. Hope to see you in October with your active National card, a few bucks and an interest in creating some great riding memories in 2015. Hello and Greetings from your Chapter Manager! Thanks to Dennis and Rhonda Hayes who help put a great Chapter Picnic this year. It began with Phil Travis leading an hour long "pre-picnic" ride. A total of 28 bikes took a slower, scenic route, to the park. Once there, they were met by a number of other members who had all ready arrived. And then, it didn't take long for the picnic to get under way, with an afternoon of good food, a "mini golf" tournament, and then finishing off with a "raffle drawing" for a number of "gift cards", provided by David Worth, (who YES, was in attendance) and Blue Springs Harley Davidson. Thanks to each of you, who came out and shared in the fun. We hope you enjoyed it, as much as we did. Dennis Hayes, Activities Officer & Rhonda Hayes, LOH Officer Membership and Mileage It’s hard to believe the riding season is nearly over, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to end. October is membership renewal month. Mark your calendar to make sure you get your Greater Kansas City Chapter membership renewed so you won’t miss any of the fun in 2015. Also, be sure to get those miles recorded for the Greater Kansas City Chapter Hard Butt Mileage Program. If you have ridden 5,000 or 10,000 + miles in the past 12 months, you will have earned a GKC Hard Butt patch. Be sure to get your beginning mileage and your ending mileage on the back of your local membership card. Kim Blystone, GKC Membership Secretary Happy Halloween and Happy Fall to you all! October is a fun month for all sorts of reasons...Halloween, Fall Color's and the annual Fall Foliage Ride. It is also the month that the Greater Kansas City HOG Chapter memberships expire. Yes I said EXPIRE. This month's newsletter should have a blank membership form for your convenience. Please fill it out and bring it up to the dealership during our winter hours (Tuesday through Friday 9-6 and Saturday's 9-5) and I will renew your membership for you. The annual dues for a Full Membership are $16.00 and an Associate Membership is $ 8.00. We will also record mileage for this year's group riding, so make sure your membership cards are up to date with your group rides, private rides and just the mileage going to the places you go. October is also the month where we are nominating our fellow members for an office position within the chapter. Please feel to mingle with other members to see if there is a position you would like to try volunteering for or know someone who might want to pitch in some time volunteering for the position's we have available. Again from your dealership and from your manager thank you all for your time and experiences to help make our chapter one that we all feel proud to belong too! Fall Foliage Ride Saturday – Sunday, October 25-26, 2014 Fall brings cooler temperatures, changing leaves and Halloween. Plan to join us for some great riding and hopefully some great fall colors. We might also ride some of the historic Route 66. At the end of the day, we will land in Springfield, Missouri where we will visit the Pythian Castle for a ghost tour on Saturday evening. The cost of the ghost tour is $15. If you are planning to take the tour, call 417) 865-1464 to make your reservation. Call early as it will likely sell out. Here is some important information you will need if you are planning to join us. We will meet at Blue Springs HarleyDavidson at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning with kickstands up 8:59 a.m. Make your hotel reservations at Route 66 Rail Haven (Best Western), 203 S Glenstone Avenue, Springfield, Riding this time of year is sometimes tricky. The weather may be chilly when you leave the garage but warms up during the day and then cools off again. These temperature variations also can affect your motorcycle. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) came up with the acronym T-CLOCK as an easy way to remember what to check to make sure your motorcycle is ready for a safe ride. T-CLOCK stands for Tires, Controls, Lights, Oil, Chassis and Kickstand. All of these items can be checked with about five minutes. Controls and cables A snapped throttle or clutch cable can leave you on the side of the road, so check them. Check the front and rear brake independently by applying the each brake and push the bike forward. Make sure they feel firm, and the wheel does not move. Lights Check to make sure all your lights are working, including brake light and turn signals. While you’re checking the lights, hit the horn to make sure it works as well. Oil and fuel Check the gas level in the tank, especially if you don’t have a gauge. Make sure the bike isn’t on “reserve”. Resetting the trip meter at each fill-up will help keep track of fuel level. Be sure to check the oil before every ride. For oil, start the bike and let it run for a moment before checking the level. Be careful not to overfill. Chassis If you sometimes ride with a passenger as well as solo, be sure to check the suspension. The bike suspension can be affected by having a passenger or not. Kickstand and Center Stand Check the kickstand and spring(s). You don’t want it to fall while you are riding. After taking just a few minutes to check the T-CLOCK, you will be ready for a great safe day of riding. Woody Simpson, Safety Tires and wheels Tires are the first step in the T-CLOCK equation. Check the rims and if you have spoked tires, make sure they are tight and straight. Checking the tire pressure in both tires and don’t forget to check the tread. You should have more than 1/16 of an inch, about the distance between Lincoln's head and the top of a penny. GKC OFFICER Nominations The 2015 Officer nominations will be finalized this month and the nominees will be published in the November newsletter.
