PRESIDENTS DINNER 2015
Celebrating SISU
On Tuesday, November 17 the Finlandia SISU Foundation held the 3rd Annual Presidents Dinner in Voima
Hall.
Over 120 people attended and were treated to a performance by Iona Reed, followed by three selections
from the Sudbury Finnish Male Choir. SISU Awards were presented by Gerry Lougheed, Jr. to the Finnish
Canadian Athletic Association Voima Inc. and the Finnish National Society of Sudbury. Dr. Kevin McCormick
presented the Huntington Fellowship to Erkki Kinos.
The Foundation would like to thank all of those who attended and wer involved in making the event a
success!

Art Show

Finlandia Village hosted its first annual art show on Sunday, November 22, 2015. The show celebrated more than
30 artists and featured over 100 pieces of original art. Mediums on display included oils, watercolours, acrylics,
photography and sculptures. The majority of the work on display was created by residents from various parts
of the village, including Hoivakoti Nursing Home. Staff and students also had work on display.
Participating artists had a wide variety of experience. For some, creative expression is relatively new and
brought forth by opportunities presented to them through organized programming at Finlandia Village in
preparation for the show. For others, art is a regular part of their daily routine. Marcel Fortin, a resident of the
Hoivakoti Nursing Home has spent the last several months working on original pieces for the show. Marcel, 84,
has been sketching and painting since the age of five. When asked what the show meant for him, Marcel said
that he was grateful for the opportunity to share his artwork with others.
Jeanna de la Morandiere, Volunteer Program Coordinator declared the event a huge success. “It was so fantastic
to see tremendous joy and pride across each participating residents face as they saw their masterpieces in
gallery form for the first time”. The show ran from 1pm-4pm and there was a constant flow of visitors, of which
included family members, staff and residents. Plans are already underway for a follow up event in 2016.
Staff Appreciation at the STC

Special thank you to Finlandia Village and the Social Committee for a successful staff
appreciation gathering at the Sudbury Theatre Centre.
Over 250 staff and their families joined us on November 28th, 2015 for an afternoon of drinks,
appetizers and a classic theatre performance of A Christmas Carol.
A meet and greet was held after the performance where staff and families met the talented
cast including Scrooge himself!

It’s a rare thing to celebrate a 100th birthday, so we are
extremely honoured to be celebrating TWO 100th birthdays

You shouldn’t only be congratulated for reaching 100 - an amazing milestone in itself - you
should be praised for the love, caring and wisdom you’ve given so generously every day for 100
years.

Art That Matters
Goodbye!

On Sunday, October 18th both Jimmy Krats
and Kristiina Skogberg attended the opening
exhibition of Gallery 6500 entitled ‘Art That
Matters’. Among the many pieces of art displayed
are three paintings from Finlandia Village: Pirkko
Lehtonen’s Rainbow, Mary Auvinen’s It Just
happened and Ubaldo Piconeri’s untitled work.
All three were made in our Finnish student ReettaKaisa Parviainen’s Music Painting class.
On Tuesday, October 13th we said goodbye to our hardworking,
energetic and friendly Finnish placement students, Emmi
Hämäläinen and Juha-Matti Tolvanen, who left for BC the
following day. After a couple of days in Vancouver, Emmi was
heading to Oregon and Juha to New York before returning to
Finland.

Laurikainen (representing the Finnish veterans) and Betty
Parcher with whom Emmi did part 0f her placement.
Art That Matters is a juried art show; selection
was made by a Selection Committee. They were
looking for art that “tells a story, that reflects our
concerns and aspirations as a society.”
After a short program and presentations, coffee and goodies
were enjoyed by all present. We had a delicious cake from
Finlandia Catering; otherwise it was “nyyttikestit” (potluck) , a
popular Finnish custom.
Laurie McGauley, a member of the Exhibition committee, has this to say about our Finlandia art: “Maybe
the most important, and radical, longing of all is achingly expressed in the works from the residents of
Finlandia Village: the longing to have a voice, and to be heard.”

Canadian Finnish Institute opens at Huntington University
On Thursday, October 9th Juha-Matti Tolvanen, our
placement student, and a few residents attended
Huntington University’s launch of their new Finnish
Studies Institute. The event took place at Science
North.

For their final Suomi-kerho (Finnish Club) event, Emmi

Emmi: Nautin luonnossa liikkumisesta ja haluaisin mennä yksin melomaan järvelle.
Juha: Tykkään liikkua, pyöräillä ja nähdä kavereita.
Emmi ja Juha-Matti suorittavat molemmat Finlandia Kylällä noin kolmen kuukauden pituista opiskeluihini
liittyvää työharjoittelua.
Toivon
Emmi: Maailman rauhaa. Haluaisin että maailmassa ei olisi epäoikeudenmukaisuutta ja julmuutta.
Ihmisten tulisi suojella luontoa.
Juha: Toivon tasa-arvoista yhteiskuntaa ja että ihmiset hyväksyisivät erilaisuutta eikä ketään syrjittäisi.
Tässä iässä
Emmi: Ei onneksi tarvitse tietää kaikesta kaikkea. Nuorena kannattaa elää, että on sitten vanahana mitä
muistella. Uusiin kulttuureihin ja ihmisiin tutustuminen kasvattaa.
Juha: Tässä iässä täytyy matkustella ja nähdä maailmaa. Koen tärkeäksi oman maailman katsomuksen
laajentamisen ja uusin asioihin tutustumisen.
Arvostan
Emmi: Vanhempiani ja isovanhempiani.
Juha: Arvostan vapautta tehda asioita joista tykkää. Arvostan myos vanhempiani ja kavereitani.
Juhan sanoin Emmi on: Eläväinen, vahvaluonteinen ja tunteellinen.
Emmin sanoin Juha on: Tunnollinen, luotettava, seikkailunhaluinen ja musikaalinen.
Tärkeintä elämässä
Emmi ja Juha: Läheiset ihmiset ja että saa tehdä sitä mistä nauttii.
Lempipaikkani on
Emmi: Veneilemässä Saimaalla.
Juhan: Mökillä nuotion äärellä kesäyönä.
Joka ilta
Emmi: Yritän löytää menneestä päivästä jotain positiivista.
Juha: Joka ilta yritän nukahtaa nopeasti ja saada hyvät yöunet.
Haluaisin vielä matkustaa
Emmi: Australiaan katsomaan koaloita.
Juha: Jamaikalle lomailemaan.
Paras muisto
Emmi: Kaikki perheeni tekemät vaellukset Repoveden kansallispuistossa. Lapsuudet kesäleirit ovat jääneet
myös hyvinä muistoina mieleen. Olen myös ollut onnekas kun sain viettää kesän 2011 Oregonissa Suomen
4H-liiton kautta.
Juha: Paras muisto on automatkat perheen kanssa Kempeleestä Helsinkiin ja ystävien kanssa koetut
hauskat asiat.
Parasta kodissani
Emmi: Se että kotini sijaitsee Saimaan rannalla, kauniin ja puhtaan luonnon äärellä.
Juha: Parasta kodissani kiva sisustus. Kotini on myös sopivan kokoinen ja se sijaitsee hyvällä paikalla.
Kun maailma murjoo
Emmi: Käännyn ystävieni puoleen tai kuuntelen musiikkia. Voin aina myös soittaa vanhemmilleni.
Juha: Kun maailma murjoo niin tapaan ystäviäni. Liikunta ja musiikki saa myös ajatukset kääntymään
paremmaksi.
En suostu luopumaan
Emmi: Unelmistani.
Juha: Ystävistäni.
Finlandiakylä
Emmi: On puitteiltaan kaunis ja sen asukkaat muodostavat aktiviisen ja tiiviin yhteisön.
Juha: On lämmin yhteisö, missä on varmasti hyvä asua.
Suomalaisuus on
Emmi: Iso osa minua. Suomen kieli ja sukujuureni ovat minulle tärkeitä.
Juha: Suomalaisuus on osa identiteettiäni. Olen tyytyväinen, kun olen saanut syntyä ja kasvaa Suomessa.
Iloitsen
Emmi: Siitä kun saan nukkua aamulla pitkään.
Juha: Siitä kun saan juoda aamukahvin rauhassa.
Finlandia kylän asukkailta olen oppinut
Emmi: Arvostamaan yhteisöllisyyttä ja elämänkokemusta.
Juha: Positiivista elämänasennetta.
Parasta Sudburyssa ja Kanadassa
Emmi: Kaunis luonto sekä ihmisten avoimuus ja positiivisuus.
Juha: Ihmisten ystävällisyys.

Emmi: Hyviä pyöräteitä, roskien kunnollista kierrättämistä ja ruisleipää.
Juha: Ystäviä ja perhettä. Omaa kotia. Harrastuksia. Suomalaista kulttuuria.
Tämän työharjoittelun jälkeen
Emmi ja Juha: Matkustamme molemmat Vancouveriin, jossa vietämme neljä päivää. Sen jälkeen Juha
toteuttaa pitkäaikaisen haaveensa New Yorkin matkasta. Sieltä Juhan matka jatkuu takaisin koti Suomeen.
Emmi matkustaa Vancouverin jälkeen tapaamaan ystäviään Oregonin osavaltioon Yhdysvaltoihin. Sieltä
hän tekee ystävänsä kanssa roadtripin Grand Canyonille.
Around the Village
2015 Finlandia Staff Service Awards
On Thursday, November 27, 2015 Finlandia Village hosted our annual Staff Service Awards.
Many staff and their families were in attendance to receive their years of service awards for 5, 10, 15,
20 and yes even 35 years of dedicated service for Carol Varey in long term care. Over 40 staff were
honoured with a total of 420+ years of service…Amazing! Thank you for sharing your SISU.
