THE EPISTLE
The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord. O God, hear my prayer.
The Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to St. Timothy. (2:1-10)
Timothy, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; and what you have heard
from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in
civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned
unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the
first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in
everything. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in
my gospel, the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the
word of God is not fettered. Therefore, I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they
also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory.

THE GOSPEL
The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:26-39)
At that time, Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.
And as He stepped out on land, there met Him a man from the city who had demons; for a long
time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw
Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, “What hast Thou to do
with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech Thee, do not torment me.” For Jesus had
commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. [For many a time it had seized him; he
was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven
by the demon into the desert.] Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said,
“Legion”; for many demons had entered him. And they begged Jesus not to command them to
depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they
begged Jesus to let them enter these. So He gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the
man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was
drowned. When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in
the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and
found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his
right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been
possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the
Gadarenes asked Jesus to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so He got into
the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with
Jesus; but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare all that God has done
for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for
him.

Volume 25 Number 43
THE DIVINE LITURGY OF OUR HOLY FATHER JOHN CHRYSOSTOM
The first antiphon, taken from Ps 103 follows: Bless the Lord, O my soul! Bless art Thou,
O Lord! Bless the Lord, O my soul! And all that is within me, bless His holy name:
Bless the Lord, O my soul! And forget not all His benefits! Who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases! Who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast
love and mercy! The Lord is compassionate and merciful, long suffering and of great goodness!
Bless the Lord, O my soul! Bless art Thou, O Lord!
The term antiphon points to the fact that the verses of the psalm are intended to be sung
alternately by two choirs, or even two singers.
The antiphon “Bless the Lord, O My soul” is sung on Sundays, on lesser feasts, as well as
the after-feasts of the major feasts. One major feasts and weekdays, the antiphons are taken
from other psalms which express the theme of the day. “Again and again in peace let us pray to
the Lord.”
The deacon’s repeated exhortation emphasizes the continuity of prayer and introduces the
second antiphon prayer, which the priest reads: O Lord our God, Thy power is beyond compare.
Thy glory cannot be understood. Thy mercy cannot be measured. Thy love for man cannot be
expressed. Look down on us and on this holy house with pity, O Master, and impart the riches
of Thy mercy and Thy compassion to us and those who pray with us. --- For thine is the majesty,
and thine are the kingdom and the power of glory: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.
The choir sings “Amen” to conclude the doxology and then sings the second antiphon.
On Sunday, it consists of verse from Ps 146:
Praise the Lord, O my soul! I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to
my God whole I have being, The Lord will reign forever; Thy God, O Zion, to all generations.
A doxology to the Holy Trinity and the Hymn “Only- begotten Son” conclude the second
antiphon.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit now and ever and unto ages of
ages. Amen Only- begotten Son and immortal Word of God who for our salvation willed to be
incarnate of the holy Theotokos and ever- virgin Mary who without change became man and
was crucified who is one of the Holy Trinity, glorified with the father and the Holy Spirit: O
Christ our God, trampling down death by death, save us!
This hymn, which expresses the Church’s faith in the divinity and humanity of Christ,
was introduced by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian.

OCTOBE R 27 - OU R HOLY FATHER NESTOR THE CHRONICLER
He arrived at the Monastery of the Caves in Kiev at the age of seventeen, while St
Theodosius was still abbot. He •wrote the first history of the Russian people, into which he
interwove the history of Russian asceticism. He was distinguished by a rare humility and
meekness. In his glorious literary works, he often refers to himself as unworthy, vulgar,
ignorant and filled with every sin. But God, who knows the heart of man, glorified this
wonderful man who was so pleasing to Him. When Nestor entered into rest, on October 27th,
1114, his relics performed many miracles.
OCTOBE R 29 – SAINT ANASTASIA OF ROME
If it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter
the kingdom of Heaven, then it should have been virtually impossible for the beautiful and
glamorous Anastasia to enter the service of Christ. The attributes that make for living a life of
ease in the grand style are obstacles to be surmounted if one prefers to lead a life of hard work
in a simple manner for the glory of God. To her everlasting credit, Anastasia, who was born
with every advantage, willingly surrendered the flower strewn path of her noble birth to walk
down the perilously rock-strewn path of Christianity.
The yawning gap between paganism and Christianity was bridged over by one small step
of St. Anastasia after she had taken Jesus Christ into her life. Her birthright, bearing, and beauty
indicated that she was to lead a life of royal ease and to be admired at a royal court. Her soul
dictated otherwise, much to her great joy and the consternation of her friends who in the end
turned out to be no friends at all.
Hers was a short but sweet reversal of the proverbial rags to riches story. St. Anastasia
gave up not a life of misery but a life of luxury for the sake of Jesus Christ.
Anastasia was born into one of Rome's most celebrated families in the third century.
Reared in the comfortable circumstances of nobility, knowing nothing of poverty or
deprivation, she was endowed with a rare beauty of face and form which became the envy of
many women of her station. At a time when most young women take full advantage of their
position and charm, she made a dramatic turn to Christ with the full awareness that her
commitment would cost her more than the material wealth she abandoned.
She was scarcely nineteen years old when the spirit of Christianity flourished within her
and revealed a beauty of soul which exceeded her beauty of face. It is ironic that her breath
taking physical beauty would prove to be her undoing, for she died an early death primarily
because of envious females.
Anastasia's new Christian faith was all that mattered to her, and she sought the advice of
her Christian friends as to how she could best serve the Lord. Fearing for her safety because she
had offended the ruling class that frowned on Christianity, they suggested that she leave the
area.
Anastasia had no desire to leave the country of her birth. Thus, as an alternative she chose
the life of an ascetic within the eremitic confines not too far removed from Rome. She directed
her educated and highly trained mind to the cause of Christ. Her reputation for piety and
sacrifice was such that soon others were disowning their social order to follow her example.
This made her all the more unpopular in the higher Roman circles, particularly among the pagan
women who not only envied her beauty, but came to hate her for her successful transition.
Charges of treason were brought against Anastasia, and she was summoned before the
provincial governor, Probios. Marveling at her beauty, he was nevertheless annoyed by her
refusal to embrace the pagan gods. She remained steadfast in her allegiance to Christ, all the
while knowing the governor's annoyance would soon turn to vengeful wrath, which it indeed
did. Because of her great beauty, however, he decided to let his decadent court have some sport,
and Anastasia was forced to parade naked before a jeering audience that included the palace
guard.
Soon tiring of this, the governor turned her over to the brutes who specialized in
tormenting victims of the state's wrath. She was ultimately beheaded on 29 October 258 and her
remains were left along the roadside near Rome.
Anastasia's body lay there for weeks in a state of preservation that was such that no insect
or bird sought to prey on her flesh. Finally, a group of Roman Christians snatched the once
beautiful Anastasia and gave her a Christian burial.

A SPIRITUAL CALL
“IF YOU TRULY FEEL HOPE, YOU WILL BE DELIVERED FROM PAIN
AND YOUR SOUL WILL BE FILLED WITH LOVE FOR THE PEOPLE”
(St. John of Thebes)
Let us ask God to open the eyes of our hearts so that we may see matters as they truly are, and
long for the forth-coming spiritual world.
“Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling,” (Hebrews 3:1). Let us be
concerned with the gifts that are given to us, which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no
human being has imagined, and which God has proclaimed to us, with His Holy Spirit.
“How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation” (Hebrews 2:3). God has given us to
enjoy the heavenly blessings from now. So it is not suitable for us to look upon earthly matters
or to be concerned with the ephemeral, temporal matters and submit to them.
If you truly feel hope, would the son grieve for his father’s departure, or his friend’s departure?
Would you grieve the loss of wealth, position, or job?
If you truly feel hope, would you be annoyed with insults at work of with family difficulties?
If you truly feel hope, would you fear pain, whether from illness or other reasons? Would you
say with St. Paul the Apostle, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not
worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us..” (Romans 8:18).
“Whoever looks at himself and meditates on his hope in Christ, is filled with joy for his
annihilation from this world. But, because we are dead to the soul’s real life, and the
revival with the body, we fear the one who annihilates us from this life (death); and then
we do not feel our inner person. The reason that we do not know ourselves is because we
have defined our life with the earthly matters.” (St. John of Thebes). ELEN SALEH

ST. NICHOLAS KIDS’ CLUB THANKSGIVING PROGRAM
Once again this year the be St. Nicholas Kids’ Club will be distributing food baskets to the
needy in our surrounding community for Thanksgiving on
Saturday, November 22, 2014. We are hoping to prepare 400
food baskets as our demand increases each year.
THE COST OF EACH BASKET IS $30 AND IT INCLUDES THE
FOLLOWING:
Chicken, Tortillas, Rice, Salsa, Beans, Chili, and Soda
Because of this need we are asking each family and individual
to participate in this ministry by donating the cost of at least
of two (2) baskets. If you can give more it would be greatly
appreciated.
We give thanks to God for all of the support and generosity that you have shown by sharing in
this ministry of love over the past 22 years.
Please see Ed or Georgette Malouf in the Hall after Liturgy or call us at 818-563-2838. You may
also mail your check to 1021 N. Orchard Drive, Burbank, CA 91506. Please make checks
payable to St. Nicholas Cathedral and write Kids’ Club in the memo line.
This event will start on the Cathedral grounds at 7:30 AM and will conclude by 11:00 AM. We

Ministry to the Newcomers
There is an immediate need to establish a Newcomers’ Ministry to help
them settle in Los Angeles, and make them members of Saint Nicholas Cathedral, and successful
residents, and adapt to American life.
The scope of this ministry includes, but not restricted to the following:
 Welcoming them to the Cathedral
 Taking Care of their spiritual needs.
 Providing a ride to Church, Bank, Doctors, DMV etc.
 Helping them open a bank account, obtain a debit or credit card, buy a cell
phone, and find adult school to learn English and computer basic skills.
 Guide them to take vocational courses.
 Helping them to receive their CA driver license.
 Helping professionals to get equivalence for their degrees such as Doctors,
Pharmacists, Nurses & Engineers etc.
There are many services that this ministry may offer on case basis, however this
list provides the meat of what our ministry does.
Any member of our church, or anyone willing to help and guide in any way of the fields above or
