AEMP Professional Development at a Glance AEMP Mission Statement AEMP Summer MELD Institutes‐The AEMP Summer MELD Institutes are designed to build a fundamental knowledge base and implementation plan for MELD at AEMP program schools. The Los Angeles Unified School District’s Academic English Mastery Program is a comprehensive, research‐based program designed to address the language needs of African American, Mexican American, Hawaiian American, and Native American students for whom Standard English is not native. The program incorporates into the curriculum instructional strategies that facilitate the acquisition of standard and academic English in classroom environments that validate, value, and build upon the language and culture of the students. Fall Writers’ Workshop Spring Literacy Workshop AEMP Monthly Professional Development‐ Designed to assist and guide AEMP program schools in implementing MELD within a cycle of continuous improvement. Professional Development for Instructional Leadership‐ • AEMP Principal Bi‐Monthly Meetings‐Designed to assist principals with the operational and instructional aspects of program implementation • Teachscape Reflect Institute ‐A complete observation and reporting system that delivers actionable feedback to teachers on trends and patterns in instruction. These five model schools receive intensive PD, coaching, and resource support for all stakeholders. Tier 2: AEMP Academies within the Support Network. 45 schools that participate in the AEMP Professional Development Network and receive quarterly professional development for teachers, parents, and principals. Tier 3: AEMP District Support. The AEMP program serves District needs through the Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department through PD events such as the Master Plan Institute and the Equal Access Series.
