Introductory Tenancies
Islington will offer introductory tenancies to all new Islington council tenants for the first year. This could be
extended if any of the tenancy conditions are broken and the council can also take action to repossess the
property. If there are no problems with the tenancy, the introductory tenancy will automatically become a secure
tenancy at the end of the year. This does not affect existing Islington council tenants, who will be offered
secured tenancies.
Some Housing Association will offer introductory tenancies fixed period from 1 to 5 years. Successful applicants
will be subject to the Housing Associations allocations policy and procedures.
Housing Association Affordable Rent Tenancy
This is a new type of Housing Association tenancy. It differs from other Housing Association tenancies as
the rents are higher and the tenancy may be an introductory tenancy fixed period from 1 to 5 years although in many circumstances it will be renewed at the end of this period. The length of tenancy and the
circumstances when they will be renewed varies between Housing Associations. If you are interested in an
Affordable Rent tenancy the Housing Association will give you more information when you view the
property and also check that you can afford it.
