FEATURED SPEAKERS & PRESENTATIONS
FINDING INNER COURAGE: THE JOURNEY OF
TRANSFORMATION — MARK NEPO
NY Times #1 best-selling author Mark Nepo is a poet, philosopher and cancer survivor
who spoke at the 2006 World Burn Congress in Sacramento. This year he returns to speak
about the journey we all face in finding inner courage. The original notion of the word
courage means to stand by one’s core. Mark will explore how we can find our way to our
core, stand by our core, and sustain the practice of living from our core—to live out of our
courage. To encourage means to impart strength and confidence, to inspire and hearten. So,
given the hardships that life presents, the question unfolds: How do we encourage ourselves,
each other, and the world? And just what does it mean to live a life of encouragement?
TO INSPIRE WITH MY JOURNEY
— ROBERT DAVID HALL
Robert David Hall, who stars as Dr. Al Robbins on the critically acclaimed CBS series,
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, will share his journey of the past 36 years. In June 1978
an 18 wheel truck struck his car and he was severely burned when his gas tank exploded,
leading to the amputation of both legs. There are always many people involved in one’s
healing and recovery. Hall will introduce two women who were a great part of that process
for him… a UC Irvine Burn Ward Nurse and a beautiful burn survivor who shared their
strength with him when he needed it most.
The most prominent actor with a disability working today, his career spans the worlds
of television, film, radio and music. He hopes his story will inspire those who are new to
this world to embrace the challenges ahead of them and know that their goals and dreams
are truly possible
A CHANGE OF PLANS — JUSTINA PAGE
When you think about it, how many of us really travel the road we thought we were
going to? Doesn’t life have a way of changing our plans? While Justina’s life was changed
drastically, the lessons she learned apply to everyone. As a burn survivor, Justina learned
how to step back into the world with confidence and she has spent her life teaching others
to do the same. She addresses the subject with extraordinary humor and wisdom while
challenging her audience to live bold purposeful life filled with hope, faith, and compassion.

Pre-Congress Workshops
October 22, 2014 | 2:00–5:00pm
PTSD: LEARNING HOW TO UNDERSTAND AND COPE
WITH THE SYMPTOMS, REDUCE THE STIGMA, AND
INCREASE PSYCHOSOCIAL SKILLS
JOHN BRIERE, PH.D.
PTSD is a psychological disorder that is thought to affect about 1/3rd of burn survivors. Many
more survivors have some symptoms, but may not have the full disorder. This workshop will
outline the primary symptoms of PTSD, from the perspective of growth and recovery. We
will discuss ways of coping with posttraumatic stress symptoms, and introduce skills such as
Mindfulness-based Breath Training. ALTERNATIVE HEALING
Shake It Out From The Bottom Up:
An Innovative Stress Management Approach To Self-Care and Healing
TRE - NKEM NDEFO
Through seven simple exercises, Tension and Trauma Release Exercise (TRE®) turns on a selfcontrolled muscular shaking that is the body’s natural re-balancing process. These tremors
spread from the legs, up the spine, releasing tension throughout the body. The technique is
easily learned and can be practiced independently, usually with immediate results.
Utilized by diverse groups ranging from the military and first responders to teachers and
athletes, TRE® has been taught in more than 100 countries over the last 20 years. Currently
35 countries maintain active training and certification programs, and TRE® training materials
have been translated into seven languages.
In this interactive workshop, we will explore how the body holding stress and trauma influences
emotional states, cognitive processes, and physical recovery. Most importantly you will learn
and practice the (TRE®) movement series with confidence and safety.
YOGA - BLAKE TEDDER
Blake will guide you through simple and fun techniques to reduce stress, quiet judgment, and
settle into your loving body. Who said meditation had to be serious, scary, or boring? It can be
absolutely fun and delightful. Through gentle breathing techniques, walking/rolling/hopping/
sliding, mindful attention, yoga-influenced movement, and heartfelt positive self-talk, you will
learn empowering tools for your life and for you to share with others. You could experience the
joy of being present, kind, and peaceful with yourself and other.
CHAIR YOGA - DIANA TENNEY
Chair Yoga is an alternative therapy for Body, Mind and Soul in a gentle way. Most traditional
yoga positions are done sitting on the edge of a chair and if the instructor has standing
positions the chair is there to help you with your balance (or there are alternate positions if you
cannot stand.) No prior experience with yoga is necessary, no special clothing. Physical, mental
emotional and social benefits come along with this fun way to practice yoga.”

MINDFUL SELF COMPASSION:
WHAT IS IT AND HOW CAN IT HELP?
SAMANTHA PRICE, MDHL, NCC, LPC
Are you your own worst critic? Do you blame yourself when things don’t go well in your life? If so,
would you like to learn another way that works and feels much better?
Even though we may tend to treat ourselves badly, the skills of self compassion can be learned by
anyone. Recent research has shown that self compassion decreases anxiety, depression, stress
and the effects of trauma. Join us in this interactive workshop as we explore the topic of self
compassion, experience it and learn ways to increase it in our lives.
ADULTS BURNED AS CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS:
RECLAIMING YOUR LIFE MEGAN BRONSON PMHCNS-BC
In order to go on with life after a trauma such as a burn injury, many children and adolescents
bury the trauma and move on, appearing resilient and unaffected while in reality, the impact
of the unprocessed trauma and loss are deeply affecting their lives. This buried trauma creates
profound problems for many individuals later on. Unresolved and unprocessed trauma and loss
negatively impact the ability to be happy, intimate, trusting, spontaneous, and self confident in
life. Most adults today who were burned as children and adolescents did not have the benefit
of the findings of current trauma research integrated into their care. Most did not benefit from
school reentry programs, burn camps and retreats, peer or group support, or trauma and loss
counseling. This workshop will focus on helping adults burned in childhood and adolescents to
understand the impact of their burn injury on their development, relationships and life and will
provide tools and direction for healing, recovering, and reclaiming your life. You have a right to
be happy and a right to free from the effects of trauma.
PAIN IS INEVITABLE. MISERY AND HAPPINESS ARE
OPTIONAL. CHOOSING HAPPINESS MICHAEL BERGERON
How, despite horrific circumstances, can I be happy in the midst of so much pain and suffering?
Is it even possible to be happy, or am I stuck in a life of misery? The answer is in the choosing.
Come join us in this interactive workshop where we will explore the concepts of pain, misery,
suffering, pleasure and happiness. Learn about ways to go about making healthy change in
yourself, the way you think, feel and behave, so that happiness becomes not just possible but
a new way of living and being.
YOUNG ADULTS: FOCUS, FUN, AND FULFILLMENT
JESSICA IRVEN,
MS, CCLS, LRT/
CTRS
RYAN DOUGLAS
This Workshop is Open to 18-25 year olds. This year we’re looking
at the topic of mindfulness, especially as it can help us live life to the
fullest by really being “in the moment”. We’ll examine our own ability
to be focused/present within relationships, during work/school, in our
everyday actions, and also in experiencing joy.
Two workshop tracks for Wednesday will offer focused content that
includes deepened self-awareness and outreach/service to others
options. Chances to work with and serve other conference attendees
(youth or adults) as well as time to fully experience joy at a local
amusement park will be highlights of our workshop time! Pre-registration
required.

psychologically, emotionally, socially, and physically. Parents/guardians
of children with burn injuries or who are injured themselves can join this
