TEN Decoder Replacement Guide 20141021.docx 1 Introduction This instruction manual is a troubleshooting guide for the process of replacing
the DSTV decoder with the new Freevision DSD 419 decoder.
Please note the following points when making this change:
• Please read and comply with the complete guide and troubleshooting
section before escalating issues as this may resolve the issue you are
experiencing.
• If you are not receiving 100% signal strength and quality on your
existing DSTV decoder you may need to slightly adjust your satellite dish
for better reception. If you are unsure of how to do this you may need
an installer to assist.
• Once you have plugged in your new decoder, it can take up to one
hour for your new decoder and the satellite to pair and activate. At
regular intervals the satellite transmits a code to decoders which allow
the decoder to unlock the encoded signal. It may take up to one hour
before decoder receives this signal from the satellite. Please allow
sufficient time for this process to take place.
• Note that heavy storms and severe wind can affect signal quality and
strength. Please test the decoder when the weather is normal.
• The decoder is the property of TEN is to be used for the sole purpose of
the Teach Every Nation broadcasts. Therefore the only channels
viewable are those that TEN has selected and all other channels will be
blocked.
• No PIN codes for decoders will be supplied to any installers or deans.
Should the decoder be faulty or incorrectly setup the decoder must be
swapped out and returned to TEN. A replacement decoder will be
provided.
• If you have followed the installation instructions below and you are still
not able to view the Teach Every Nation (TEN) channel on channel 710,
please follow step #1 and #2 below. This will assist us in resolving the
issue.
1. Take a photo of the television so we can see precisely
what is on the screen, including the channel number.
2. Send an email with the listed information to
[email protected]
that
includes
the
following information:
• Church / Site Name
• Church / Site Address
• Dean Name and Surname
• Dean Cell Phone Number
• Decoder CAS ID
• Smart Card Number
• Dish Size (60 cm/80 cm/90 cm)
• Once your email is received, you will be contacted with further
instructions.
• If you do not receive a reply to your email after one working business
day, please call TEN Technical Support on +27 81 033 8632
• Do not call the satellite provider under any circumstances. TEN will
contact them on your behalf.
2 Instructions Step 1 Disconnect the previous DSTV decoder from your satellite dish, power supply
and television. This will vary by decoder and television and depend on
whether you are using RCA or RF cables. Once this has been removed you
are ready to move on to the next step.
Step 2 Decoder installation:
Unpacking the decoder:
The decoder is delivered with a Smart Card attached. Please do not mix the
Smart Cards and decoders as they have been paired.
TEN Decoder Replacement Guide 20141021.docx 3 Opening the box reveals the Freevision decoder

you are using the RF output of the DECODER, then select a channel on your
TV set and tune the TV to the DECODER output signal.
If you are using the Analogue audio (RCA cables) and video connections, as
shown above, select AV as a source on your TV set.
Refer to the TV set operation manual for all TV related setting.
6 Connect the power supply and the red light should burn.
The decoder will now search for signal and populate the channel list.
TEN Decoder Replacement Guide 20141021.docx 7 Once the scan has completed, the channel list should appear.
Select channel 710 for Teach Every Nation (TEN). PRESS OK.
8 The decoder might need to do a software update, please allow it to follow its
course.
The update will start and a progress bar indicates the update status
TEN Decoder Replacement Guide 20141021.docx 9 The front panel will show a numerical status indication that counts up and
letters change indicating that scanning is taking place.
When the update is done the progress bar will reach the right hand side of
the window. When the download has successfully completed, the message
will be shown on the screen.
10 At this stage your decoder should show be locked to the signal and the TEN
broadcast displayed.
TEN Decoder Replacement Guide 20141021.docx 11 Troubleshooting There are several factors that can affect a quality signal being received.
Some of these, as previously mentioned, could be weather or incorrect
alignment of the satellite dish. Listed below are some examples of issues that
could be experienced if you have completed the installation process and no
broadcast is displayed.
The Smartcard is Not Registered The following message will be shown if the smart card and decoder have not
been paired. In this case please follow the process as described in the
Introduction section on page 2.
12 Signal is Not Available This error message displays when the signal is not being received by the
decoder. This could be as a result of bad weather or bad cable connections.
Please check the cable connections to ensure there is proper contact with
the cable and the receiver.
However, if the weather is normal the satellite dish will need to be aligned
with the Intel Sat 20 satellite and the Freevision transponder. If you are unable
to adjust the satellite you will need to request a professional installer to assist.
Picture is Visible but No Sound First off ensure that the volume is up on both your decoder and the television.
If you are receiving a picture but cannot hear any sound you need to refer to
your installation / setup guide for your television. The television needs to be set
to PAL system. In some televisions this is also referred to as “I” system. Once
adjusted your volume levels need to be checked on the decoder and
television and you should be receiving clear audio.
TEN Decoder Replacement Guide 20141021.docx 13 Adjusting the Aspect Ratio The video that is broadcast is originally setup for televisions with an aspect
ratio of 16:9. Most televisions nowadays have this setting readily available and
are set for it.
However, the older televisions operate with an aspect ratio of 4:3, which
produces a shorter and broader picture. You can adjust this via the television
and decoder. For the adjustment via television you will need to refer to your
television instruction manual. The process below will help you to adjust the
aspect ratio on the decoder.
Push the menu button on the decoder remote, located above the P+ button
on the left handle side of the remote. A menu will appear as per the below
picture. Use the arrows to scroll down to the Settings option and push the OK
button in the centre of the remote.
14 Upon selecting OK a new menu will appear as displayed below. Use the
arrow keys to move the selection bar to the ‘TV Display’ option and once
again push the OK button located in the middle of the remote control.
A new menu will appear as displayed below, with display information listed in
the box to the right. You will see here what your aspect ratio setting is. In the
example below it is set to 4:3. Use the arrow buttons to scroll down to the
‘Format’ menu option and click OK
TEN Decoder Replacement Guide 20141021.docx 15 You will see a selection to change the aspect ratio as below. Use the arrow
buttons to select the appropriate option and push OK. This will save and
adjust the aspect ratio accordingly.
