the
Twilight athletics season gets underway
On Friday evening, three vanloads of
athletes from the Motueka High School
Athletics Academy headed across to
Saxton Stadium to begin the twilight season.
It was a low key start with just a
handful of events being run but it was
a chance to see if the hours of running
the roads during the winter months was
going to pay dividends. The National
Secondary School Champs are to be held
in Wanganui in December so this was
also the next step for those athletes who
have qualified.
The highlight of the evening was
undoubtedly Tess Haunch’s PB (Personal
Best) in the Long Jump at just over 5.0 m
but there a range of good performances
in both the 60m and 100m. The racing
was especially close in the boys racing
with fractions of a second covering the
top 7 times. Connor Bithell took out the
quickest time overall with Culainn Stringer
just behind.
In the girls races, Amanda Fitsemanu
had the fastest time overall but our
new exchange student athlete, Danielle
Wember was only a footstep behind.
The result was identical in the girls
100m race (Amanda stopping the clock
at 12.6 seconds, just outside her own PB)
but the timers could not separate Culainn
and Connor second time around in the
boy’s racing.
Risi Pouri Lane showed that she’s lost
nothing in the off season with the javelin.
She was within 3m of her own South
Island record and threw consistently all

at 6.00pm, Motueka Recreation Centre.

night.
The final track event of the evening was
the 600m, a notoriously tough distance.
The girl’s race was taken out by Kelsey
Barrett who looked strong throughout.
Jacob Bryan (a year 9 student) finished
second in his race behind a much older
athlete and looks a good prospect.
Coach Tony Aitkenhead was pleased
with how the squad looked. “We had 25
athletes competing tonight which is the
most we have ever had. Next year we’ll
have 35 in the Academy and that will be
really exciting.” We’ll be watching the
squad with interest as they build for the
upcoming season.
Amanda Fitsemanu, Danielle Wember
and Tess Haunch wind up to full speed
in the 60m sprint.
Summer soccer league warms up
Motueka’s Summer Soccer League
kicks-off this evening with a friendly warm
up round before getting in to full swing
next Wednesday evening, and organisers
say there is still room for teams to join.
The six-aside summer series includes
three grades which allows for all family
members to be a part of.
The mixed grade is child orientated and
is suitable for women and under 15 year
olds.
Men can also play in this grade but
aren’t allowed to score goals.
The social grade is for all players, but
the rule is there must be at least three
women or under 15 year old players on the
field at all times.
For more competitive games, there is
the premier grade too.
The summer series is well-known for
being a fun, family orientated, and sociable
competition, and is also great for winter
footballers who want to keep up their skills
and fitness throughout summer.
Games are played every Wednesday
evenings at Goodmans Park next to the

right through summer until mid-March, with
a two week break around the Christmas
period.
“It was brilliant last year,” says organiser
Carl Koberstein.
“It’s a very social competition and we’re
all a bunch of mates!”
“We are about three quarters full so
teams can still register before we get
underway”.
