Welcome to the last edition of Insight for 2014. As we are in the midst of
preparing for senior prize-giving it is a good time to reflect on the wide
variety of successes and achievements of students and teachers at Motueka
High School. Many of these are reflected in the articles in this Insight as
well as our 2014 Weka magazine which is due out at the end of the term.
I would like to acknowledge the Year 13 students and others who are
leaving Motueka High School and moving on to the ‘big, wide world’. If
you have embraced our core rules of Manage Self, Have Respect and Strive
to Learn you will take your place in modern society, well-equipped to face
the challenges that real life brings. Take heart in the knowledge that you
will always be welcome back to the school and that we will follow your
achievements for years to come.
We welcome our new students and families making the transition from
Year 8 to high school. Next year we have a large cohort coming through
and we look forward to meeting you at our parent information sessions,
Orientation Day and at our Meet the Teacher barbecue early on next year.

Term 3 Highlights - It was such a busy term and I am sure everyone
earned a well-deserved break at the end of it. We had our Open Evening,
Course Selection and a wonderful assortment of drama and music
productions. The term culminated in two nights of Cabaret at which both
students and teachers joined together in an Abba number not to be
forgotten. The next weekend was the Senior Ball which was attended by
well over 100 senior students. The move to September meant much
warmer weather for students and the masses of onlookers who come each
year to witness the grand entry to the school hall. The behaviour of
students was exemplary and food provided by Janice and the PTA, superb.
Term 4 - Already this term there have been many student centered
activities which have displayed the talents of a large number of students.
Fashionista highlighted the sewing and modelling prowess of a large
number of students and gave the audience the chance to see many wedding
dresses which came out of the wardrobe especially for the occasion. A
sports prizegiving has also been introduced to recognise all of the students,
who participated, lead and achieved highly in the different sports codes in
2014. Thank you to all of the staff and parents who have been involved in
these events.

Senior NCEA exams
By the time this publication reaches you, seniors
should be well into their final preparation for exams.
Many students query the value of striving to do their
best in exams especially if they have already achieved
their NCEA via internally assessed credits. Students
need to do well in exams to achieve subject
endorsements, entry to next level courses and in
some cases places in tertiary study. A Merit or an
Excellence in an exam demonstrates good study
skills, good recall and a willingness to do independent
work in order to reach a goal. There is always great
satisfaction for students who achieve highly in exams.

NZAquabots - 2nd Place
The NZAquabot programme has been designed around the
SeaPerch programme in the USA in which teams of students
build an underwater robot from a prescribed kit and compete
in a series of tasks. This year Isaac Bensemann, Jay Watson,
Mitchell Rowling and Kyle Wilson took part in the event held
at Waimea pool. They spent many lunch hours assembling the
structure and electronics and then many more testing and
honing their control skills. They came first in two of the four
tasks to place second overall. Isaac was at the controls for the
timed slalom obstacle course with the fasted time. Mitchell
deftly controlled the sub in the Salvage operation where he
scored the most points in collected rings.
Isaac concerned about the aquabot motors & Mitchell ready

Wow, term four already! This year has gone so fast.
All the awesome things we got to do probably had
something to do with it…
Our journey as head students blasted off with a week
away at the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre in
December 2013. With a total of 15 people from
different parts of the South Island, we were all taught
about working together and leadership, through team
building, tramping, navigation, problem solving, high
ropes, rock climbing, abseiling, and sitting in the
forest by ourselves to reflect on life… which was good
to have a short break at the end of a packed week.
Initially not knowing what to expect, we really
enjoyed ourselves and left with lots of new friends
and useful skills, ready to take on 2014.
Through all the “Mornings” and “G’days” of Monday
assemblies, free food, public speaking, important
meetings and awesome opportunities, we have
cherished our time as head students and look forward
to the next stage of our lives. A highlight has been the
Head Student days - where head students from all
around the region go to one school for a day. Waimea
College, Nelson College for Girls, Nayland College
and ourselves hosted them. They are always a lot of
fun getting to know the others and doing ridiculous
things like dressing up in crazy costumes and dancing
in front of hundreds of Nayland students before
judging their talent quest.
We have had an amazing year, and we hope that all of
you have too. All the best for the future and upcoming
NCEA exams!

Te Whare Pora
Te Whare Pora is looking neat and tidy after a partial
repaint that has given it a much more modern and
clean look. Next step is to upgrade some of the
furniture ready for the new year.
This term sees the changing of the guard for the
Student Contacts and we farewelled this year’s
Contacts with a thank you morning tea at Toad Hall.
They have been an excellent group of helpers, giving
freely of their time to meet with the juniors that they
mentor, and ensuring that there is always one or two
of them at The House every interval and lunchtime.
With the warmer weather, and impending exams,
they have returned their focus to their studies and we
are encouraging the juniors to enjoy intervals and
lunchtimes with their peers. Time now to select next
year’s leaders – the Student Contact positions offer a
perfect opportunity for those year 11 to 13 students
who are thinking of moving into the “people
professions” as they will learn and practice skills such
as active listening, expressing empathy, mentoring,
conflict resolution, mediation and referring on for
more help.
CABARET
September’s Cabaret was an opportunity for our
Performing Arts students to strut their stuff in the
Memorial Hall, which had been beautifully lit and
decorated to create the perfect ambience for a fantastic
two evenings of entertainment. Musicians, dancers and
a theatre sports group kept the audience entertained
throughout the evening. Two intervals allowed for tasty
morsels from the kitchen to be served, and provided an
opportunity for the audience to peruse and place a
silent bid on a number of quirky items that had been
donated by staff members. Thanks to all the students,
parents and school staff for the time and effort they put
into the event.
An issue that has been causing conflict and grief
around the globe and sadly creeping into our
community is that of abuse of electronic media.
Cyberbullying has moved to a new level with the
capture and dissemination of personal information
and images. To begin to address this, we invited
Detective Philippa Greenland from the Nelson Police
to speak to our students about this behaviour and
how there are serious repercussions for all parties,
both emotionally and in terms of the legal
consequences. Education around this issue will
continue, with a PB4L focus next year. As always, we
encourage parents to be as aware as possible about
how your child is using electronic technology – the
main message being that what goes online stays
online so think twice before you post anything.

Music
The Wellington Jazz Festival was held from
August 21 – 23 and was a valuable experience for the
four music students who attended.
In late August, Max McAlpine, Billy Bathgate,
Lachlan Burne and I travelled to Wellington for
three days to Wellington’s Jazz Festival as the Jazz
Combo. It was an awesome opportunity to play in
front of some very knowledgeable Jazz teachers and
receive feedback at a National Level. It was a very
inspiring experience and we all enjoyed it
immensely.
Daniel Tideman
September’s Cabaret was a great opportunity for
many of our instrumentalists and singers, along with
dance and drama students, to perform over two
evenings at the beautifully decked out Memorial Hall.
The audiences were treated to performances from;
Suono Bellissimo, the Motueka Singers, the Concert
Band as well as from many excellent duo and solo
performers.
A highlight for many was the enthusiastic finale
where the Motueka Singers, in full 70s gear, sang
most of the well-known Abba hits. Thanks to the
students, school staff and parents for their hard work
and support of this memorable event.
Cabaret: Victoria, Morgan, Abby, Hayley & Julian
Stage One, part of the Nelson Arts Festival, takes
place at the top of Trafalgar St and is another
opportunity for primary and secondary schools to
showcase their performing arts students on a
specially constructed outdoor stage. A group of our
Year 10 students gave a thirty minute performance.
The conditions were a bit challenging with a gusty
wind but the students and audience enjoyed the
performance.
Stage One: Sapphire Jordan & Jayme Rae Anae
Events planned for this term include; a visit from an
NMIT band at a lunchtime gig in our school hall, a
concert by our musicians at the Chanel Arts
Centre on Thursday, October 30th at 7 pm and,
as the seniors begin preparations for exams, end of
year trips out with junior musicians include a visit to
the Jack Inglis Hospital and to local kindergartens.
Julian Mittmann, Maria Eschenbach, Max McAlpine
Thanks must go to the parents of all the Music
students who support their teenagers with their
music. We couldn’t do it without you!
Outdoor Education
Survivor: 2014 Year 13:
After some final lead climbing adventures over in
Golden Bay it is time to say “Haere Ra” to this crew.
I’d like to thank those who saw it through to the end
for all for their questions, efforts, enthusiasm and
good humour throughout the year. They have mixed
it with the best out on the water, in the hills,
underground and in the bush… all without forgetting
and leaving too many things behind! They leave the
course as independent outdoor adventurers in all
these environments. I’d like to wish them all the very
best for the trail ahead and no doubt we will be
hearing of their upcoming adventures, here and
overseas.
Year 11: The Year 11 class capped off their year with
a multi-adventure expedition to Golden Bay. They
endured sleeping in a cave, tramping, panning for
gold, sea kayaking and climbing. The year finishes off
with extending their climbing skills and completing
required paperwork to gain NCEA credits. There is
some great talent and leadership coming through and
we will hear lots more about some of these folks as
they progress.
Year 10 and Year 9: Adventure students have
camps coming up in and around the Abel Tasman NP
in weeks 5 and 7 to see out the end of the year.
Sadly it’s that time of year where we say farewell to a
number of international students studying Outdoor
Education as they return home. An especially big
“Sayonara” to Nana and Misa. We have enjoyed
getting to know you and appreciate the effort and
enthusiasm you bring each day. I know you have
some fantastic memories of your time here. You have
all been wonderful representatives for your school
and country. Keep on paddling, climbing, caving,
tramping, smiling…we hope to see you back here in
Aotearoa one day!
All the best to our seniors for the upcoming exams
and hopefully we will see you out and about hard at
play over the coming holidays. Kia kaha.
Yr 13 OE students playing with ropes and rock rescue, Breakers Bay
Year 12: The last few weeks of this term have seen
the emergence of some great rock climbing talent as
we have journeyed from the school bouldering wall,
MotRock, Vertical Limits, Takaka Hill, Pohara to the
world class climbing at Paynes Ford. Everyone (even
an aging, injured Mr Wheeler!) has scrambled up
something in fine style with all belaying safely and
many pushing higher grades and indeed, ready for
the next step to becoming safe, independent ‘rock
stars’ by starting to lead climb. Great stuff!

Finally, I’d also like to congratulate the Outdoor

consistently showed a high level of leadership, skill
development and application throughout the year
and thoroughly deserve their success.

The Warehouse Red shirts in
Schools Programme
There will be more opportunities for senior students
to complete this programme early next year through
STAR/Gateway. *Please talk to Mr Aikenhead or
Mrs Beatson for more information*
There are six senior students currently completing
the programme: Nikita Pahl, Jadine Ngatoro,
Joshua Te Groen, Cody Dadson, Fainga Siaki
and Jos Olykan. (Cody & Nikita pictured below)
Jamie Hobby, Manager of the Warehouse Motueka is
excited about the Red Shirts in Schools programme
which has just been rolled out in the Motueka store.
“The programme gives students the opportunity to
get a real taste for what it’s like working in retail.”
The students carry out work experience for one day a
week: 9-3pm, for ten weeks. This will enable them to
complete a Customer Service Award worth 27 Level 2
and 3 NCEA credits covering the essentials in
customer service, communication skills, personal
presentation, product knowledge & team work.
Jamie is really proud of having a big group of
students start the first programme. “Red shirts in
schools is great for building character in the
students and growing skills that they will need for
the workforce, it’s a real privilege to be involved
with the programme”
There is a dedicated Coordinator: Tara Stewart, who
meets with the students every week to check their
progress and help them with the written work. Tara
commented that “The staff are really supportive of
the programme and they are already impressed
with the students’ enthusiasm and attitude”
