Farewell! 10 December 2015, Study Coordinator Niina Huovinen Get-together for exchange students returning home in December 2015 Please tell us… what has been the absolute highlight and the worst low point of your exchange at Aalto 11.12.2015 2 Things to take care of 11.12.2015 3 Paperwork 1. Transcript of records from Aalto University • Not sent automatically. Ask from [email protected] when all results in Oodi 2. Erasmus students: Certificate of attendance/arrival/departure • Your home university provides the form • Departure date = date when academic activities end Possible LA changes Don’t let Aalto password expire > Have access to Aalto account until end of December! 11.12.2015 4 Other things to take care of • Clean your room • Return room keys • Terminate Finnish bank account, if you have one • Terminate Finnish mobile subscription, if postpaid • Join Aalto Alumni Network Benefits of joining Reverse culture shock 11.12.2015 6 Reverse culture shock You are here! 11.12.2015 7 What does it mean? • Normal and unavoidable to re–examine priorities and values during exchange: What do you think of your home country and countrymen? • Prepare for changes, mainly in yourself. Reverse culture shock may be more difficult & powerful than culture shock during exchange. • You may not be able to pick up where you left off: Friends/family have moved on in their lives, things have happened 11.12.2015 8 Old and new friends • Don’t expect TOO much enthusiasm/interest (nobody seems to really care about my “When I was abroad…" stories) > frustration, feelings of alienation, misunderstandings • Don’t get upset! Be interested also in their lives. • Network with those who share similar experiences: 1. International sections/clubs at university 2. Become a tutor for international students 3. Find ways to keep up language skills (courses, international friends, internship abroad..) 11.12.2015 9 Make the most of it! • Treasure the memories: make a photo album, save your blog • Your experience changed you: Hold on to changes that were for the better! • Accept that it may take time to feel ”like home” at home again. You’ll fall back into old routines, but things won't be exactly the same. >You’ve developed new attitudes, beliefs, habits, goals; see things differently. • Important: Incorporate positive aspects of international experience with positive aspects of life at home. 11.12.2015 10 International competence 11.12.2015 11 11.12.2015 12 Know how to sell it! • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Language skills Intercultural communication skills Global awareness Adaptability Tolerance Independence Productivity Resilience Curiosity Problem-solving skills Decision-making skills Time management Money management Increased initiative Increased confidence and responsibility Networking skills 11.12.2015 13 For example like this: “During my exchange period in Finland, I studied in a multicultural environment with people from all over Europe and Asia, for example. I learned to work well with people coming from different backgrounds. Particularly useful was the interdisciplinary product development project course where my team consisted of students who were not only from different cultural backgrounds but also from different fields of study; engineers worked together with business and arts students. During the project I learned to express myself clearly in English and to argue my point constructively. This is a very useful skill in my field in which it’s important to get along also with people who disagree with you. Studying abroad has increased my self-knowledge, confidence and curiosity towards new things. During my exchange at Aalto University I made useful contacts and learned networking skills. I established many contacts and networks among local and international colleagues; I am still in touch with them. This is beneficial professionally because it helps me keep abreast with international trends in my field.” 11.12.2015 14 Highlights and lowpoints Highlights and low points 11.12.2015 16 Interested in completing a whole degree in Aalto? 11.12.2015 17 Master’s programmes at Aalto ELEC • Application round for master’s programmes ongoing now! • Application instructions online: http://www.aalto.fi/en/studies/admissions/tech/masters_degree/ 11.12.2015 18 Master's Programme in Automation and Electrical Engineering Three majors: • Electrical Power and Energy Engineering • Marko Hinkkanen, Matti Lehtonen • Control, Robotics and Autonomous Systems • Ville Kyrki, Valeriy Vyatkin • Translational Engineering • Tomi Laurila, Liisa Halonen • Professor Anouar Belahcen Master's Programme in Nano and Radio Sciences Five majors: • Advanced Materials and Photonics • Ilkka Tittonen, Erkki Ikonen • Micro- and Nanoelectronic Circuit Design • Jussi Ryynänen, Kari Halonen • Micro- and Nanosciences • Markku Sopanen, Harri Lipsanen • Radio Science and Engineering • Sergei Tretyakov, Antti Räisänen • Space Science and Technology • Anne Lähteenmäki, Esa Kallio • Professor Jussi Ryynänen 11.12.2015 20 Master's Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences Eight majors (four of them have specialization tracks as well) • Communications Engineering (Aalto ELEC) • Jyri Hämäläinen, Jukka Manner, Heikki Hämmäinen • Acoustics and Audio Technology (Aalto ELEC) • Ville Pulkki, Vesa Välimäki • Signal, Speech and Language Processing (Aalto ELEC) • Mikko Kurimo, Paavo Alku, Visa Koivunen • Game Design and Production (Aalto SCI) • Computer Science (Aalto SCI) • Software and Service Engineering (Aalto SCI) • Mobile Computing, Services, and Security (Aalto SCI) • Machine Learning and Data Mining (Aalto SCI) • Professor Riku Jäntti 11.12.2015 21 Master's Programme in Life Science Technologies Six majors: • Biosensing and –electronics (Aalto ELEC) • Mervi Paulasto-Kröckel • Bioinformatics (Aalto SCI) • Biomedical Engineering (Aalto SCI) • Biosystems and –materials (Aalto CHEM) • Complex Systems (Aalto SCI) • Human Neuroscience and –technology (Aalto SCI) 11.12.2015 22 Näkemiin! 11.12.2015 24
