These demos are situated in two halls ( “Engine Room” and “Studio”) Engine Room, 1st Floor: Directional Audio Coding ( DirAC) Come see the state-of-the-art technology demos in spatial audio synthesis and reproduction. This is the audio technology of the future in games. We can manipulate sound in different ways and reproduce it optimally – be it loudspeakers or headphones. The fusion of audio-driven design and graphic storytelling makes Astronaut Down a play field at the fringes of games, music and comics. It pushes the classic arena fighter genre further by adding artillery game mechanics, physics and an unhealthy dose of insanity. The game is still at demo stage so your feedback is most welcome! Virtual reality is an exciting topic as it fundamentally changes the way we interact with games. We have researched virtual reality technology since 2007, and now we have created a software toolkit for Unity3D that allows easy development of games with full-body tracking, which is essential for holodeck-like experiences. http://ruisystem.net/ Tuukka Takala (Doctoral candidate) and Heikki Heiskanen from Aalto University School of Science, Department of Computer Science. “Old Gods” -Project “Old Gods” is a first person action-adventure game set in an alternative, more dark and fantastic take on 19th Century Europe. In the game you play as Victoria Grimsworth – the last descendant of a family of British occult scholars and researchers, as she travels around Europe and solves various supernatural phenomena and treats. “Old Gods” is not a horror game, but draws a lot of it’s inspiration from horror fiction, folklore and classical ghost stories. The game focuses on exploring the world using your various supernatural powers and casting powerful rituals to deal with different Undead and demonic enemies. Another big focus of the game is the concept of “brittle empowerment” – Playing as Victoria the players are constantly facing forces and energies beyond human comprehension and even using your own powers drains you energy and can even drive Victoria insane. This demo is still work in progress and focuses on the exploration and adventuring aspects of Old Gods. Shadow Bug is still far from complete, but it has already received recognition in the form of Avek's concept funding and by winning Beatcon's pitching competition. We aspire to make a high-quality game and are eager to hear your suggestions and feedback for improving it. Shadow Bug is a part of Game Project course in Aalto University Media Lab. Team: Veli Laamanen Kim Valori Juha Ylimäki STOP THE DREAM – Videogame Stop the Dream is a physics-based first person 3d action/puzzle game. It tells astory of an arcade game addict Alex, who falls into a coma after vicious gaming rampage. Game paints a psychedelic picture of Alex’s subjective experience of the coma, where he struggles with demons of his earlier life and addiction. Game mechanics rely heavily on physics engine which intends to create a unique and fresh gameplay experience. The playable demo is in mid stage of its development.
