Thursday 23rd October 2014. Newsletter No. 32 Principal’s Chat: Dear Parents, Caregivers and Members of the College Community This week we bid farewell our Year 12s as they move into the last study vacation leading to their final exams. The written exams begin on Wednesday 29th October with the English exams; however there have been performance and oral language exams running since the 6th October. I recommend to all families of students involved in these exams – please ensure that you have a readily available and visible copy of your child’s exam timetable posted somewhere in the house and that all transport (and contingency) plans are made well in advance of each exam. One of the issues that we face living in the country is that if something breaks down or gets missed – suddenly we are unable to get to where we need to be. It is important that our students do not face these problems or worries whilst they are focused on their exams. Give your child plenty of space around this time. But at the same time, help them to stay focused on what they need to be doing – studying. It is vital for students in study mode to keep to routines, get plenty of sleep and stay wellnourished and hydrated. Remind your child when necessary that study is an active process – it requires writing things down, summarizing and re-reading and discussing. Watching TV, texting on the phone or using Facebook is not multitasking – they are unnecessary distractions that directly impact on the quality of study and should be reserved for planned breaks. It is important to remind our students that the exam period is relatively short and the time for celebration is afterwards. We have many very talented and committed young people undertaking their final exams this year and I look forward to seeing some excellent results this year. I also congratulate our students on their conduct on not only the last day at school, but also right throughout their final couple of weeks this term. On the last day, our students dressed up in fancy dress for the traditional BBQ breakfast and water slide – thank-you to Kyneton Fire Brigade for once again supporting this event. After the fun, they cleaned up and returned for the customary morning tea with staff. The morning tea provides an opportunity for students to recognize the effort of all of their teachers over their last six years of schooling and for staff to recognize each of the graduating students. The day finished off with a picnic out at Hanging Rock. Throughout the festivities, our students conducted themselves extremely well and were a credit both to themselves and to their school. I wish them all the very best for their final exams, subject outcomes and future endeavors. Year 12 celebrated muck up day this week. Mark Ridgeway, Principal [email protected] Thankyou to Ms Maree Jamieson for the photo board on the next page. Parents - we have a dedicated phone number to report student absence If your child is going to be absent please call 03 5421 1195 and leave a message. Grade 6 Orientation Day Year 9 Update Alpine School group heading to China Kyneton Secondary College has been a part of the Alpine School for Leadership program for several years: a school/camp for year 9 students from Victorian public schools with a learning focus on leadership, independence and teamwork skills. The 2014 term 4 Kyneton Secondary College representatives are Jasmin Barton, Isaac Hale, Travis Hill, Paisley Irvine, Janelle Spinks and Holly Tomlinson. The original plan was that we were going to the Dinner Plain campus for 9 weeks but then things changed; slightly. To our surprise we found out that the Alpine School had collaborated with the Victorian Young Leaders to China program and Utahloy International School in Guangzhou, China. So we will be going to the Dinner Plain campus for two weeks and will also be spending four weeks in China! We were shocked and overjoyed and slightly disbelieving of our luck. The China New Horizons Program has been running for a few years but the Alpine School has never been a part of it, which makes us the pilot program. As well as going overseas for a month with many people we have never met and without any family members we will also be without any personal electronics and will have no access to social media sites – no mobile phones or facebook. We have all agreed that this will be a good thing as it will help us gain more independence. Along with the Alpine school’s curriculum will be the amazing itinerary learning about Chinese culture, community service projects such as teaching English to primary school students and helping paint run down school buildings. Outdoor expeditions will teach us about teamwork during fun activities including abseiling, rock climbing and kayaking. It is going to be very special indeed. We depart for the Alpine Camp on the 25th of October and then depart for China on Nov 1st. We are so grateful and couldn’t be happier that we are going to be a part of this amazing experience and look forward to sharing this on our return. Alpine Leadership Group 2014 Alpine Representatives Front Row: Janelle Spinks, Jasmin Barton, Holly Tomlinson. Back Row: Travis Hill. Isaac Hale, Paisley Irvine Cricket-Years7/8 On Friday a group of year 7 & 8 students went to Castlemaine to compete in a T20 Blast/Super 8’s Cricket competition. The T20/Super 8’s competition is a modified cricket tournament where the field is modified and everybody gets an opportunity to bat, bowl, field and wicket keep. Kyneton had 3 teams compete: a year 7 Boys team, a year 7/8 Boys team and a year 7/8 Girls team. The year 7 Boys team were met by some fierce competition but managed to be quite competitive winning 1 out of their 3 games played, with Ben Cass taking a hat-trick in one of the games. The year 7/8 Boys also won 1 out of their 3 games, with some great individual performances from Connor Lever and Brayden Smiley. The year 7/8 Girls team played with great excitement and enthusiasm, they manage a win but also had some fantastic individual performances with a special mention going to Paige Webber-Mirkin and Maddi Andrews. All teams had a great time and participated to the best of their ability and most importantly with great sportsmanship. Their behaviour on and off the field was exemplary and they shook the hands of their opposition at the end of each game without any prompting. A very enjoyable day was had by all. Mr Joel McLean-Teacher Domain Update AUTOMOTIVE Over the semester the Year 9 & 10 Automotive class has been working hard on their group projects. The year 9’s have been busy designing and building human powered vehicles and a Go kart to hopefully test them at the end of the term. While completing this project students have been learning about steering & brake systems and practicing their skills with welding and engineering frames and components to build their vehicles. We would like to thank Bolton motorcycles who generously donated a used working engine for the Go Kart. During the past few weeks the Year 10’s have been learning about how a car engine works. They have taken the opportunity to dismantle the Ford V8 engine to give it a new look. Students around the Technology wing may have heard the new and very loud exhaust system that is fitted to the engine, thanks to the VET Automotive class. Hopefully they can get it finished soon so we can bring it out for students to see during lunchtime. Mr. Shaun Tollis VET Auto Classroom Teacher Article from the Past KYNETON HIGH SCHOOL STAFF OFFICIALLY CONGRATULATED A worthy tribute to the work of the teachers and students of the Kyneton High School has been received by the Headmaster Mr. C. C. Fisher, from the Education Department. The letter signed by the Chief Inspector of Secondary Schools, Mr. C. T.Scarff, is phrased as follows - “The excellent examination results secured by the Kyneton High School at the recent public examinations have been noted with satisfaction by this Department. Please convey to the staff the Department’s appreciation of their successful work. It is seldom that such graceful acknowledgement of the efforts of the teachers and the success of the students in their examination work is paid by the heads of a Government department and the receipt of such an official communication indicates that following a survey of the 1947 examinations in the secondary schools of Victoria, that the Kyneton High School results possessed outstanding merit. Community Garden Generous students It was a beautiful spring day in the community garden this week, with an enthusiastic group of gardeners. We planted some potatoes and parsley that were donated by staff member, Judy Young. Thank you once again for your donation (your earlier donation of celery seedlings are doing really well) and if anyone has some spare seedlings after doing their own spring planting, we would be happy to use them. Caroline Sharpe visited us this week, and presented $300 to the Community Garden on behalf of the generous year 9/10 Environmental Studies students from first semester. As you may remember these students won a community award for their great work, and chose to donate the money they received to the garden. Our gardening group will be considering the best way to spend this generous donation, and will let you know the details soon. Don’t forget that the new Kyneton Community Lunch has commenced on Wednesdays during school terms at the Mechanics Institute. Just turn up at 12.30 pm to enjoy some great company and a delicious lunch. The lunch is an initiative of Kyneton Community & Learning Centre and it is hoped that this is an opportunity for people to meet new people, catch up with old friends, share a meal and have a sense of community. Much of the food is being donated by local businesses and community members as well as the Community Garden. The food will be prepared by a volunteer team, and the cost is $3 donation for a two course meal. If you have any excess produce to donate please contact the KC&LC on 5422 3433. As the Community Garden activities are all coordinated by Kyneton Transition Hub please direct any enquiries to [email protected] or phone Julie (Community Liaison) on 5422 3023. Or check out our website: www.kynetontransitionhub.com. We’re happy to host you at times that suit you and provide you with information on wicking beds, compost tea, native bees, biochar, permaculture, gardening in Kyneton conditions and other topics. Join us any Tuesday during school terms from 9.30 am (to about 11.15). Workshops are held on the second Tuesday of the month during school terms at the usual time. If Tuesdays don’t suit, please call us for other times. During school hours please Bears back in Woodend The Woodend Teddy Bear Show is on again at the end of this month.
