Those are words that come to mind when thinking about how we communicate today. Though most of us love the amazing benefits of technology, sometimes the mobility and pace of electronic communication makes it feel as if we can never get away from that text or email from someone trying to reach out and connect. As administrators, we appreciate and encourage building personal connections with our families through open, ongoing communications such as face-to-face meetings, phone calls, Twitter, emails, or notes in the backpack. There is no better way to reduce worry and uncertainty than to maintain an open line of communication, proactively answering questions and addressing issues before they become unnecessary misunderstandings. Never hesitate to ask questions or provide us feedback about your child’s education; our connection with families is an important part of what makes Lake Country special. There is another key matter to acknowledge, though, as it relates to communication. At Lake Country we believe staff members need to strike a healthy balance between work and personal family time, as that balance results in happier, more fulfilled, more committed educators. Contrary to the always-on world technology provides, we do not expect our staff to be available on-demand. A natural result of that reality is that there can be some lag time in communications between our families and staff. But what is a reasonable timeframe to expect a response? Responses from staff will always be timely...though “timely” may be defined differently by different people. To clarify, we always do our best to respond as immediately as possible. Realistically, return communications should be provided by the end of the following school day from when the family initiated contact. Yes, logistically that may be over 24 hours before receiving a follow-up communication. The rationale is fairly logical. When teachers are with students, we expect that they give students their full attention. This leaves teacher prep time to attend to the many other duties a teacher performs, including checking messages and emails. This prep time is limited and teachers may not even receive messages from families until the end of the day. Gathering information, providing thoughtful responses, and attending to matters in their own personal life all figure into the timeliness of a response communication from the teacher. Despite the instantaneous nature of sending and receiving emails, we ask for your understanding and patience in giving teachers the time to think about and respond in a thoughtful manner to the important messages and questions you direct toward them. We know there are times when parents need to make more immediate communication with the school. There is a support channel in place in our main office if immediate communication is needed with the school. You may call or email our School Secretary, Lisa Acton ([email protected]) or Attendance Secretary, Pam Wiemer ([email protected]) for this assistance. As always, you may contact Mark on his cell at 262-490-0318. Enjoy conferences this Thursday and the personal face-to-face communication we love having with families to discuss your child’s learning and performance here at LCS.
